Most skillful Blades player ever

I had the great pleasure of meeting Len a few years ago.
He told me how frustrating it was to be outpaced by Eddie Colquhoun and Woody, both of whom smoked like chimneys.
I remember both Eddie and Woody chatting to a glamorous looking woman on a table behind me in the Leagueliner train coming back from Arsenal in March 1973 and both were smoking cigarettes. I was gawping at them and my dad told me to mind my own business and look the other way.

Michael Tongue on his day was top drawer.

I had to pick up on this comment as he gets a bit of a bad press it seems sometimes but when he first burst on the scene he was an absolute joy to watch. I remember saying to my old man that it looked like the ball was glued to his feet he was that in control with it.

It's a pity he went off the boil so to speak at an early age and never fulfilled his promise.

Has to be Hagan, Currie and Sabella. The first two well in front and then could be a fair few for 3rd. Alex Sabella for me though. It is a great pity that most of our present day fans never had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy Hagan. Also, a pity that there is not much film footage of him. All credit to him as well considering he lost , possibly, his peak years to the Second World War. It is very interesting to read of other posters' choices , many and varied. Out of interest my next ,4th to 6th ,would be Willy Hamilton, Woodward and Hodges.

Played 11 games scoring 2 between November 1975 and October 1976. His only good game for us was the 1-1 home draw against Fulham (his penultimate game for us). He prepared well , without touching alcohol, for the Fulham game as he knew there was going to be a big crowd (28K which was double our average for the season) as Fulham had Bobby Moore, George Best and Rodney Marsh playing for them. Played out of his skin in that match.
Given the title "most skillful blade ever", for me he is above TC and Sabella, genuine all time great at his Celtic peak but by the time he scored the goal against Wolves he was allegedly still on the bottle

My contenders are Sabella, Hagan, Currie, and Woodward. Picking a winner is the problem. I will eliminate Sabella only on the grounds that he was pretty useless in the wet, heavy, winter conditions. I know I am punking out, but I cannot decide between the others. I only know that I am one of the dwindling band of Blades lucky enough to have seen them all, and I am still in awe of their God given talent.

Tonge was absolutely brilliant when he first got into the team and was unplayable at times. I thought he would get to the very top of the game. Alas, he became a shadow of himself very quickly - largely because defenders learnt he would generally cut inside. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a United player’s level of performance go backwards as much as Tonge’s did.

Glynn Hodges one of your most talented players? It’s bloody hilarious, cheered me reyt up 😂

You genuinely don't think Glynn Hodges was skilful? There are loads of things you can throw at him but he was undoubtedly skilful. The only reason he never played for one of the very top sides is cos he was a lazy fat headcase.

Go and watch some of his goals you clown.

Didn't Tongey have some personal problems that screwed him up? Not sure what but I seem to remember an interview where he was lost for words and the interviewer had to fill in for him...

Woody wasn't skill full in terms of dribbling, but nevertheless he had a bag full of other tricks. He was a powerful runner with the ball, pacy, could place or swerve a ball pretty much wherever he wanted, & of course he had a hammer in either foot. Beckham was good no doubt, but Woody was the better player for me, faster, stronger, at least if not a better crosser & striker of a football & scored way more goals from open play, not much of a contest in the end!
I know i've said this on other forums but I thought Geoff Salmons was equally as skillful as Currie before he left for Stoke.

I knew Len for many years profesionally when he was involved in the pub trade. A more likeable chap you could not wish to meet.

Stevens
McGoldrick
Fleck
Norwood
L. Freeman

Mousset has pace and power but doesn't strike me as being particularly skilful.
I'd add Basham and Lundstram to that list and I have to think hard about it but I'm letting their non athletic appearances cloud my judgement, they've both pulled some sweet moves this season (9/10 of football is in the head).
