Most skillful Blades player ever

One flash of brilliance.
He did of course do other bits of skill whilst in a United shirt whether you'd class them as 'brilliant' or not I don't know as I'm not sure what criteria you're using.
I just Youtubed it as I'm wondering whether I dreamed it, nope the kid was brilliant. As well as the 'meg he struck the fear into Wednesday with his run that earned the early freekick, nobody should underestimate how seeing a player do that early in the game will have a bearing on it.

When they sold Brooks they sold the only player with the capability to become a legend in the mould of Currie..

We've talked about the Brooks trade off and how well the money was spent so I won't go over it again.. but I think we sold the entertainer that the youth in our crowd would have talked about for the years to come.. on his day unplayable..

Disagree if you like, it's a free world, I could see what we had and I was gutted for everybody...the last act of Kevin Mcabe ?

I'm still hoping Brooks returns to his former glory and comes back.

Not a single mention for Franz Carr.

A player that could beat a player with ease, then he'd turn back and beat him again.

Unfortunately he'd do this unnecessarily 3/4 times and inevitably lost the ball.

Vas Borbokis deffo. I've never seen anyone take a free kick like he does and his crossing was pin point also.

Michael Brown was also sublime in his time with us. Patrick Suffo scored some screamers in his time with us, I remember every goal fondly!

Coutts is up there. I’d have loved to see the pre-leg break Coutts in the PL.

Current squad.

The original post said most naturally talented and I'd tend to agree. Main point being naturally. That's different from being the most skillful. There's quite a few at present who are performing better than him through effort and sheer hard work sprinkled with a certain level of natural talent which is making them stand out this season.

IMO if Moose applied himself to the level, of say Bash or JOC or Fleck, then he would be the best player at the club.

Unfortunately I just don't think he'll ever be that driven so we'll never see the best of him and more than likely sell him when CW has had enough wondering what could have been.

A left shot vut Henry camara did things I have never seen a blade before do that goal against Bristol City I think it was was the hardest shot I have seen at the lane

The title should be - Most skillful Blades player ever, we usually end up selling 🤷‍♂️

Come on .

Within the lifetime of anyone on here there are three who stand head and shoulders above the rest and they are Hagan , Currie and Sabella .

Closest to them IMO would be a player rarely mentioned on here , but who on his day could demonstrate breathtaking skills and his name was Willie Hamilton .

I once saw him take the ball fully 70 yards down the pitch juggling the ball off his knees , head , shoulders and feet going past players as if they weren't there and then unleashing a volley . I can't remember whether it was a goal or a near miss but it was an astonishing piece of skill , among with others he produced for us .

Anyone else remember him ?

No. Before my time unfortunately. I thought you meant "Chico" for a moment - who, like Willie, also played for Sheffield United and Aston Villa.

Chico still lives in this area (I think) because my wife used to work with his wife a few years ago in the NHS.

Yes indeed. Willie had it all. As good as any. Unfortunately he had this habit of ‘borrowing other people’s vehicles’

In my lifetime of watching, which is from 1970 up to the end of March 2020, the most skilful player I've seen is Tony Currie and Alex Sabella isn't far off that, but overall TC is easily the most skilful I've seen. Sabella had great close control and dribbling skills - but Currie had that and more. He had vision. He could receive the ball in his own 18 yard box, look up and see the possibility of something being on, and launch the ball 70 yards to Woodward or Dearden and drop it on a sixpence, i.e. pin-point accuracy.

Looking back, I think TC must have invented "walking football", because we regularly saw him take the ball in towards the corner flag, being pursued by two or three defenders. But unlike today's players, he didn't stand there shielding the ball to waste time or try and win a corner. He just spun around, dropped a shoulder, juggled the ball between his feet and walked past them into the penalty area. It was quite something to witness.

Some other players who have impressed me with their skills are:

Patrick Suffo - probably not many people will agree with this, because he's best remembered for that head butt in the Battle of Bramall Lane, but that lad was extremely skilful. Being so skilful meant he didn't get much of a look-in under Warnock, but I recall seeing his dribbling skills in particular and he could move the ball at pace and completely bamboozle players with his skills.

Other great dribblers include:

Gil Reece
Tony Field
Colin Morris

And to bring things right up to date, the most skilful player I've seen at Bramall Lane since the great TC is David Brooks. I hope I see him in a Sheffield United shirt again one day.

Tony Fields, scored one of the best dribbling goals ever seen by me, from the halfway line to back of the net, seem to think it was against Dipswich and something like 7-0. Probably got game and score wrong though.

I think the 7-0 game was before that Alf. I remember being at that game, it was a saturday afternoon fixture, little Laurie Sivell was in goal for Ipswich and I think Woody scored 4 of the 7 goals? But the Tony Field goal you speak about, I think (if my memory isn't deceiving me), was in a night match at Bramall Lane - I can't recall the opponents, but it may have been Ipswich? (SilentBlade will no doubt confirm). I remember the goal well - he seemed to single-handedly dribble around every player on the pitch before putting it in the net - one of the best goals I've ever seen down there.

7-0 win was in November 1971. Tony Field joined us in March 1974. His solo goal was the third of the 3-1 win in August 1974. Laurie Sivell was in goal for both games

👍How your memory plays tricks eh . Cheers

A certain player he teamed up with when he came to the Lane was hardly the perfect role model for a young impressionable footballer starting out in his career .

Anyone interested in learning more about him should google an article in The Scotsman , which is an excellent summary of both his genius and his flaws in a tragically short life .

Jimmy Hagan. Absolutely sublime player, so the Grandad always said, and he wasn't a man who was easily impressed or gave out such praise too often.

Another one was Harold Brook.

Anyone mentioned Peter Ndlovu ?

Randomly, I thought Kevin Gage also had some neat control I seem to remember.

Didn’t see Currie or some of the others mentioned so probably since the mid 90s, I’d have to say Didsy is probably the best I’ve seen for the flair.

Someone mentioned Jamie Murphy and to be fair, for taking defenders on, and going through to score he was also very good.

Sabella is the most skilful I’ve seen...and I’ve seen Currie play.

Sabella was like a free styling ball juggler....almost like a circus act....he’d have been good on Britain’s got talent.
I used to watch his pre game warm ups and he‘d be catching the ball on the back of his neck doing tricks and keepy uppies.
Most skilful isn’t the best though..of course Currie and several others were far better overall players.

Sabella had all the tricks and flicks but was small, slow and lacked physicality.
He struggled on muddy pitches and didn’t seem to like playing when it was raining or windy....brilliant close control though and good to watch.
