Postpone, play behind closed doors or carry on?

Yes they have , so far this season I’ve committed a lot of money following the Blades home and away just like last season and the season and before .... the Euros can fuck off
Actually i' didn't read the initial comment fully.

I've been to 13 matches this season. Each one costs 110 quid in taxi fayres and anything between 60-200 quid in air fayres. So, yes, I've spent thousands so far this season too.

I’ve voted for 2 week postponement.....then play as normal...

People who say we need to protect our 85 year olds who are currently ill in hospital are being politically correct.
Of course no one wants their elderly parents are grand parents to die prematurely when they might have had another 5 or 10 years.
Even if those years are of poor quality with little dignity...it’s natural to have a pro life attitude at any cost.
Death is personal and an emotive subject....people struggle to think of the bigger picture.

However if we bring the country to a stand still with a total lock down.....the implications are potentially much much worse.
There is an argument to carry on as normal....most people will get the flu and be unwell for a few days....but almost everyone will live
Many of the very elderly with health problems will likely die but that might be the better option compared to the alternatives.

Just think we need to think carefully. We take action to solve a problem but then it could create another problem that’s much worse.

PS: Actually I agree with Cassius above......”other”.....let the experts armed with information decide.

Yes, no doubt. As I say, I just worry that the government will hide behind this action and not take more drastic action that may affect more people and be less popular.

And the obvious point i should have made eralier, is that if you go to the football, you will be most likely be going to the pub as well, which further increase the risk, you'll be getting pissed and not be so concious of your actions.

If the games are played behind closed doors, then fewerr people will be doing that.

but I couldn't give a toss about that if any of the 15 or 20 family members that are regulars at the lane catch it there.

Experts have said the virus is difficult to pass on outside, it’s travelling on the buses/ tube and being in the pubs where it can be passed on.
Also if anyone is fit enough to attend a football match at the Lane then they will have the strength to survive the virus.
However of course if they visited any vulnerable family members after catching it then those people might not be so lucky.

I appreciate people might say if there’s a 0.01% chance of catching this virus at the match then they wont take the risk
but there’s a chance someone could be run over by car whilst going to the match....everything in life is a risk....but life must go on (as much as possible).

True, but then that brings the whole question of how far people should be allowed to socialise anyway, if it's getting that dangerous. Simply the passing of glasses from one hand to another (one customer, bar tender, another customer) has to be one of the most dangerous situations.

Spent thousands on travel you have used and attended a match

Unless you have already booked a load of travel and accommodation for our remaining fixtures you won’t be out of pocket if the season is delayed.

If the Euros are cancelled I’ll lose the best part of a grand without leaving my house or attending a match, that’s my worry.

Got to admit Sheff, I'm struggling with a lot of this post. It's not politically correct to want to look after the elderly and infirm, its humane. The assumption that elderly people cant live a healthy and worthwhile lifestyle after 85 is preposterous! What problem are we creating that's ' much worse'?

well it may get to that point, but a country (and a PM) that prides itself on it’s liberalism, may not want to go that far right now.

Just carry on. Borris and his mates seem to have a different view to everyone else. What I don't get about football crowds was that they excpect a maximum of 80% of the population to catch CV19 yet dismiss sporting gatherings as a meaningful way of spreading the virus as an infected person could only pass this on to 2 or 3 other people.

So if 20% of the crowd turn up to the Lane next match with the virus knowingly or not (6k) potentially by the final whistle 24k could walk out of the ground with it.

Don't get that reasoning by our PM/ science experts.

You sound like you want people to die just so you can still attend matches at the Lane
dont be daft
just been on tv
the science says not to close schools yet or ban sporting events
we are in the delay phase
the chief medical officer said if 5 people attend game they will infect 2 at most whilst out and its just as likely to be in the pub beforehand
they wont infect 2000 which some people think, this is from the experts
the risk in crowds is just now minimal
and closing schools pushes kids on the more at risk grand parents heightening the danger
we dont do now what italy do as we are around 4 to 6 weeks behind

They also said people will die ,,,, no matter what we do
its not being mean or uncaring , its just how it is
sorry if it sounds harsh , but theres no nice way of facing that reality

isolating everyone now will make things worse

Indeed, but the season is the entire package, it would be akin to going to the cinema and the projector failing with 20 mins to go. It's still plenty of investment in a product that's perhaps might not be completed.

Agree....it’s difficult to think straight when avoidable deaths are involved.

The instant answer is protect those people who are currently close to death....this virus pushes them over the edge.
Your average healthy 85 year living a healthy lifestyle will be fine.....everyone that has died in the UK so far was elderly and already had health problems.

My point is “the consequences“ of taking an action are really important.
Lets says there’s a 9 month shut down of the country.....the economy could collapse, mass unemployment, mass debt and poverty.
Many businesses closing down, football clubs going bust, public unrest/ riots and looting, mass criminality and violence, 1000’s of suicides.
I‘m probably exaggerating but it’s important to consider what might happen....personally thing we’ll chose the middle ground.

Problem is less about people gathering in grounds, more to do with hundreds of thousands of people shuttling around the country for matches. For Newcastle game, e.g., both we and Toon will have fans scattered all over the UK who would make the trip. Many of them travelling on public transport. Is there a better way of ensuring Covid gets rapidly spread far and wide?

Medium term, it’s also about deployment of plod and other emergency services. Is their time better spent looking after football, or looking after pandemic?

It‘s “just a cold”, though, and “let vulnerable people die, football is more important“, obvs.

I’m just getting confused by the whole thing, the US bans European flights and Ireland are closing schools and colleges and banning sporting events. But we’re seemingly carrying on as normal by comparison?

Surely all the world experts should be in agreement and every country with similar outbreak statistics should be tackling this in a similar manner?

Based on the Johns Hopkins figures, 6.36% of outcomes are death (up from 6.19% when I checked yesterday).

Amesh Adalja MD an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security puts worst case at 0.6% ultimately. You can hear him on the Sam Harris making sense podcast.

Which I agree with, we should definitely complete this season. I’d just prefer the Euros to go ahead as planned if possible with the completion of this season to be either after or crammed in before.

Well, if I've gotta go, then it might aswell be while I'm watching the Blades battling for a place in Europe, afterall, even if we get there it will be postponed or abandoned anyway, so we won't actually play there!

Trouble is you don't necessarily have to be "old" to have health problems that can be exacerbated by Corona Virus.

Given we're all wankers at the lane I can't see any reason to play behind closed doors. We'll be fine.
love it. So when my dad said to me I would go blind he must have been fibbing.😂

Difficult as I find this to say, I think the government isx probably walking the tightrope as well as it can be. Whilst I can't shake the idea that Boris is an oaf, he does seem to have deferred to the 2 geeky tefal types who appear to know their shit
