Amesh Adalja MD an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security puts worst case at 0.6% ultimately. You can hear him on the Sam Harris making sense podcast.

This thread Is getting as personal and unpleasant as the shoutbox is when a match is being played. Think I’ll pass on it from now On

I’m just getting confused by the whole thing, the US bans European flights and Ireland are closing schools and colleges and banning sporting events. But we’re seemingly carrying on as normal by comparison?

I wouldn't rely on any US policy decision being a coherent action informed by expert opinion. Well, except for that of one expert...

"I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. Every one of these doctors said, 'How do you know so much about this?' Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for President."

I can't see how the integrity of the competition can carry on when sides are missing large numbers of players. Leicester have 3 in isolation right now. Shades of the arsenal spurs lasagna gate when it costs sides European places or survival.

this is key , will mean countries affected now can over run the fixtures without hinderance , and could postpone a few league games for several weeks

The easiest and best solution as follows:
End the season now with league positions as they will be following 3 points allocated to any teams with games in hand.
Suspend the FA Cup next season and play the remaining FA cup games of this season starting in March next year.
Dock 20 points from any team having breached FFP rules.
Sorted!

Any one who needs to understand why we are doing what we are doing view the attached from 23.40 onwards.
The excellent Chief Medical and Scientific Officers Chris Witty and Sir Patrick Vallance provided all the answers and continue to bat down the hysterical press.

Main points;

Covid 19 is not like normal flu it is contagious for which there is currently no vaccine.
We are past the point of contain and have moved to delay.
If we can delay the peak of the epidemic and flatten it out over months pushing it out towards the Summer then this will assist the NHS in terms of available resources.
Anyone now displaying any of the symptoms fever, continuous dry cough should stay at Home and self isolate for 7 days. Don't call 111 who will now deal with the serious cases.
Current advice is designed to reduce the mortality rate.
Between 5-10k may have the virus in the UK already but some will not even notice they have it.
It is not a bad thing that healthy people get it as it will build up resistance for any future strains. The danger is transmitting it to the elderly and at risk groups.

We are four weeks away from achieving similar numbers to those identified as having the disease currently in Italy.
We are up to 10 weeks away from reaching the peak.
The peak is estimated to last for up to 10 weeks.

It is vital that "lockdown " actions are taken to co-incide with the peak for maximum effect. To do them too early will result in fatigue and minimise the impact. For that reason;

Schools will remain open as shutting them down now may expose elderly relatives to children with the virus.
Major gatherings such as Football will not be restricted for the moment. Scientific evidence suggests banning outside events have little impact on delaying the disease. One person coughing can normally only expose 1 or 2 people outside. The greater risk is indoors such as the pub. Consideration will however be given to the impact these events have on key service resources. Discussions are continuing on this.

So, do you think all football should be suspended, played behind closed doors or continue as normal?

I personally think matches should be played behind closed doors in high risk areas with stadiums in other areas banning away fans from high risk areas. Matches where there's suspected cases on one or both teams should be postponed.

Medium risk areas should be behind closed doors. Low risk areas carrying on as normal with maybe a ban on high risk groups attending (even though that would be very difficult to monitor).

I voted “postpone”.

There’s one major flaw in your “high”, “medium” “low” risk areas. It’s the same one that’s eluded Donald Trump, so no need to feel bad about it but...

We can’t be certain that we know which are the high, medium, low risk areas. Because we don’t know how many people might actually have it. It may be symptomless in some, but there’s no test currently which can detect that. The numbers we are seeing currently only represent the ones that have been diagnosed and/or treated.

Also the virus has no respect for geography. So it’s not possible to say an area is low risk.

Trump should know better. We’ll let you off though! ;)

I can't think of a single reason not to do this, assuming football has to end in the near future. Let teams carry over the points they currently have into next season, so if you have 50 points, you start with 50 points. That way, all the clubs who have done well, will still have an advantage, and the likes of Norwich will still start bottom, etc.
A 2 season season, if you like.

It’s my 30th on Saturday I plan on going to Newcastle seeing the blades play absolutely class again - getting the 3 points, coming home and having it large in Sheffield.

A behind closed doors or possibly postponed game will ruin my plans and not only that we are on great form we don’t want a break thanks

It is interesting how it’s differing from France. Both following science apparently. Can both be right?

History will tell us... But given the crowds outside the PSG game last night, the notion that people have a limited tolerance when asked to restrict their behaviour seems plausible. If we can pick our moments then perhaps that’s better?

Hope so...

Absolutely, this virus has a 14 day incubation period, we have absolutely no way of knowing what the scenario will be like in two weeks time. That, is why rhe R of I gov has closed schools and banned mass public gatherings in an attempt to 'get ahead of the curve', which roughly translates as, hope to fuck by doing this now, "the shit moutain won't ne nearly as bad in a fortnight". Boris has shown more calm/fear* ( *delete as applicable). The unfolding will be either, phew!... Glad we didn't panic, or, why the fuck did we hesitate and not do what the Irich did!!!

Each government will be basing their responses on their own national situations. Not every response will be the same, some might adopt the same approaches but on different timescales, and some may opt for approaches in spite of the scientific advice. I don’t know what the relationship is between the Macron’s government and the scientific advice for this response. But our lead scientific advisers are very visible in the public response to this.

Demographics and national behaviours are slightly different too. The question of where all these kids go when schools are closed is a fair one. On the continent, extended families living in close proximity may be more common than the UK. So grandparents may inevitably be exposed to kids, and reducing transmission amongst kids becomes more important in protecting the elderly.

I’m guessing, but there will be different slants.

Politicians from all sides are being hung out to dry by dickheads like Piers Morgan, no fan of John Ashworth but he tried to tell Morgan at least 6 times this morning that they had to follow the advice of the Chief Medical officer, is it so fucking difficult to understand that ? No wonder no one will go on that cunts programme.

The girls in our house have it on in the mornings so I unfortunately see snippets. Why the fuck would anyone a) watch it and/or b) take any notice of it is beyond me.

What difference will 2 days make ? Let’s play the game and see what happens - at your own risk.

If you don’t want to go anymore then return your ticket to the box office. We can’t live in fear and if they put the game behind closed doors there will be however many fans home and away that had tickets probably decent on Newcastle anyways and watch it in the pub.... 🤷‍♀️

In my opinion anyways.

Being in one of the high risk groups myself I think personally we should follow the advice of the Chief medical officer for the UK as Boris and the Government are doing at the moment. The number of cases is set to peak at the end of May so not sure that shutting down sports will make a bit of difference to that, just as much chance of catching it in the boozer or at the shops. Monitor the situation on a weekly basis and make changes when appropriate far too many are going into panic mode resulting in panic buying and shit. It is all a bit like Brexit to me the world was going to end if we came out of the EU but guess what we are still here, still working, still trading and you can still buy anything in the shops ( except for shit roll and hand cleanser gels) FFS

Hoping a virus affecting young people doesn't emerge! .... you self centred b*****ds ... sort your lifestyle out and don't expect the elderly to look after your kids then! No babysitting no school runs, no bailouts from bank of dad ... ummm it's only football ffs!!! 🤣

Just tell old codgers to stay at home.

If it's just mild flu for the rest of us, then we might as well all get it and let our immune systems build resistance to it.

This just actually made me laugh out loud. Oh my god.

To be fair anyone could be in the category of “underlying illness” - this is why I said attend at your own risk. So, say they ban public gatherings. What’s everyone going to do lock themselves at home for 2 week and no got anywhere or speak to anyone face to face ?
Even though places are on lock down now the news presenters have still flown there and people are still walking around in the background.
Nothing makes sense...
