The high sulphur content of the water used to make Wards ("fine malt ales") meant that if you didn't know how to keep your cellar in good order, and the beer went off, it smelt of bad eggs (because of the sulpher, the classic school boy "stink Bomb"), but when it was kept well, it was a lovely pint.
Always good farting beer was Wards, it made them stink like bad eggs. One of my favourite beers, I miss it.

Sampled wards as a 17 year old in my early ventures up town. Wig and Pen I think. Rotten eggs would be the
perfect description.

Probably get slaughtered for this but where is the Matilda? A well known name in my head but for the life of me I can’t remember where it is / was

Its on Matilda Street
Was in there when it got raided by the cops for early drinking when we played Man Ure in the Cup

Any old stagers ever go in The Rising sun, think it was on Denby St. Used to pass it as a nipper going to the Lane.

Is it me or is there a bit of an upsurge in boozers over the last few years .there was the big decline in the 90s and 00s when lots of old pubs closed down but they seem to be popping up all over the place a lately. Hour certainly not short of some where to go for a few beers in Sheffield ,theres some great little areas, Kelham island and now all these pubs on the way to the lane . I like to jump on the train to Manchester now and then and go for a few around the northern quarter , if I was living on the other side I'd be coming over here for a few . Like someone said is there a better place to come from out of town for a drink with the exception of London ( not the prices but the number of pubs / areas to drink )

The Little Mesters/Cultural Industries Quarter has been crying out for a few more pubs/bars etc so glad to see it’s finally taking off.

Elsewhere there are loads of pockets of decent boozing to be had - Kelham Island/Abbeydale Road/Heeley Bottom/Crookes, Walkely & Broomhill all destinations in their own right.

Craft ale places seem to have kick started the pub revival. On the face of it they seem easier/less risky to start up as they don’t come with all the baggage of a pub.

Sheffield benefits from not being overly plagued by chains, particularly on the fringes of the city centre.

Imagine the restaurant scene if Maccy dees, KFC, nandos, burger king and all the other brands were told to fuck off and individual businesses took over.

Not sure what the Olivia's and Liam's would nosh though.

I think pubs are consolidating into the population centres - there seems to be far more pubs in town, and far fewer ion the outskirts.

Just be replaced by shit burger/pizza/chicken joints that churn out 3rd rate crap for the even less gourmandlike. As if we need more of them throughout the City.

Under their clothes yes. Not this girl. Oh no. Just a bra. And santa hat (before Christmas this was).

Fashion I'm told. I questioned this when we went out in the summer. There was a bird wearing what can only be described as a 'bra' albeit with a corset type bottom to it in a bar. I stared then asked the Mrs what was going on. I got called old and told that this is now fashion.

I'd agree with this. Suburban pubs are often worth far more being converted into residential dwellings unless they do a decent trade all week, usually by offer something special to bring trade in from beyond the immediate catchment area.
