I'd agree with this. Suburban pubs are often worth far more being converted into residential dwellings unless they do a decent trade all week, usually by offer something special to bring trade in from beyond the immediate catchment area.

Co-op and Tesco seem to have bought all the ones near me. I thought about going in, buying a can of beer and just sitting at the checkouts drinking for comedy effect but they never have any staff on the shop floor to kick you out. They must get robbed blind.

Fashion I'm told. I questioned this when we went out in the summer. There was a bird wearing what can only be described as a 'bra' albeit with a corset type bottom to it in a bar. I stared then asked the Mrs what was going on. I got called old and told that this is now fashion.
I think the reaction from my Mrs would be somewhat harsher

As far as suburban pubs are concerned I think they should re-open the Bradway and turn it into a 'Football Manager Theme Pub' based upon this is where Chris Wilder first dreamed up the overlapping centre backs etc.

Exaggerating the truth a little but it'd attract all the football geeks.

Yep.....used to be on the ground floor and first floor.....just across from the churchyard.
Snooker table upstairs in that long room?...my mum and dad use to go in there in the 70s and early 80s,just remember having a lemonade and packet if chipsticks when I got took with them😁

Same place......i faced the "jury" in 1976😊

The high sulphur content of the water used to make Wards ("fine malt ales") meant that if you didn't know how to keep your cellar in good order, and the beer went off, it smelt of bad eggs (because of the sulpher, the classic school boy "stink Bomb"), but when it was kept well, it was a lovely pint.
Interesting. Not least because my first pint of wards smelt like that and I stayed clear of it thereafter for quite a while. The second pint was nothing like it and not bad at all.

I heard about a year ago it was to Re-Open.
They have been working on it for at least that time (I drive past most mornings to work) on some occasions you could see inside if the door is open, it was just a shell the last time I managed to get a look inside about a month ago.
Did notice what looked like a beer garden at the back, but that was done months ago.
Seemed strange they did the beer garden before the inside.
It would make sense if all the old shite from the beer garden has to go out through the Pub😉

What a brilliant fashion idea! Although sadly there will be a fair few who shouldn’t try and involve themselves with the latest fashion, I shall put up with them for the good ones. I just need to go out more.

This is what is known as a basque. It's been "fashion" for about 150 years!!😂😂😂

Not sure if the Matilda is re-opening but a new 'Subterranean' bar is opening on the corner of Matilda Street and Sydney Street soon. This is from 'Exposed' magazine. The last paragraph does say the Matilda Tavern is to re-open 'soon'.

Subterranean bar to open this month
EXPOSED MAGAZINE
on 7th January 2020 at 12:29 pm
An underground bar connected to the Sydney and Matilda art gallery is set to open at the end of this month.

“If the lanterns are glowing, we are open, enter the door on the corner,” owner Al Daw tells us. “And soon you will find yourself under the street in the Matilda bar. It’s somewhat of a tribute to the style and laid back attitude of a traditional working mans’ club with an underground speakeasy atmosphere.”

The Matilda bar offers a friendly, relaxed environment that’s unpretentious and welcoming but still retains a private feel. Visitors can expect specially created cocktails, local craft beer as well as more off-beat wines and spirits from Asia and Eastern Europe.

Al added: “We are programming grass-roots, live-music, performance and events for Matilda. Part of Sidney (the warehouse gallery space) is being converted into a lounge bar area with more of a pub feel, complete with artist library and revolving exhibition displays alongside traditional pub games such as table football and darts as well as arcade games.

“We feel the subterranean basement bar, cultural programming and Cultural Industries Quarter location alongside the connection to the gallery is unique. The space is a hybrid of inspiration from Berlin, Brooklyn, London and Paris and we are delighted to be able to bring this to Sheffield.”

With new neighbours Industry Tap, Triple Point and the soon to re-open Matilda Tavern alongside local favourites the Lord Nelson and the Rutland Arms, it’s shaping up to be another attractive area for Sheffield’s drinkers.

Edit. Just seen the post from Cassius Kray
Looks like an Amsterdam brothel

Yes from what I recall the people behind the refurb at the Matilda Tavern put quite a bit of work into it but had terrible timing with Covid completely stymying their plans.

Well at least the dubious-sounding 'subterranean bar' referenced on the first page has turned into an interesting and much-needed live music venue.
