I have unashamedly stolen this off PorkTalk but I think it's quite a decent thread, rather than the usual piss and moan about KB.

What do you think the turning points in the history of Sheffield United have been?

From anytime in the last...

Week
Month
Year
Decade
Entire club history

Personally I'd go for Webber's shot against the post in the Wigan match.

Rob Hulse breaking his leg at Stamford Bridge.
Don Givens missing THAT pen.
Ted Hemsley going off at Old Trafford.

It would have been interesting if Brown had scored that penalty at the Millennium Stadium.

When Jones joined Leeds and Birchenall joined Chelsea within a few months of each other

Failing in our attempts in the 90s to sign Jean Pierre Papin?
Choosing not to sign Maradonna?

Not far off ........ then every decent player we've had gets sold........ every crunch match we get stuffed.......the whole ethos at BDTBL needs to change.........

What the foo k are we going to do nar were skint again ? the management fooked up with £££'s to spend and wasted it....is Gordon at BDTBL ?

In reverse order from my time watching the blades in earnest. the one in Bold had the biggest impact IMO

- Appointing Robson
- Failing to draw with Wigan
- WHU getting away with it
- Hulse breaking his leg
- Failing to strengthen in Jan 2007
+ Shipperly
- Picking Rankine in PO Final 02/03
+ Appointing Warnock
- Deane & Fjortoft
- Not replacing Deane before Feb 1994
+ Double Whammy Derby Days
+ Deane & Agana
+ Appointing Bassett

How about SCC turning down the 'Brearley Centre' ? (Owls fans on the council) !

when jon macphail hit the bar in the bdm when it was only 1-0

when spackman left and we were playing like brazil

A tricky one this, but I'll go for the shoes-off carpark protest. I may be wrong, but I think that might have been the moment when McCabe decided to step back.

Failing that, the most recent was Burnley's goal in the Play Off final. We all knew we'd lost at that moment, and the costs will be borne for years to come.

Recent turning point:-

Jags' handball against Wigan.

Turning point of our history:-

At the inception of the Premier League, Dave Bassett told the Blades directors that NOW was the time to invest and push the club forward because football was about to change. They ignored him; and the rest was history.

He may as well have been talking to cat for what use that bunch of directors were. :(

Even though it's before my time, building the South Stand in 1973-75 burdened the club with a massive debt that hamstrung us even more as we slid through the divisions between 1976-1981. In my lifetime, the arrival of Warnock in 1999 was obviously a plus point, and the relegation in 2007 was not necesarily a disaster, but the subsequent apppoinment of Robson was, as in my opinion any decent manager would have been able to get us back up within the 2 year span of the parachute payments.

And quite ironic to think that McCabe only stepped in after a protest in the car park to get rid of MacDonald and Heath.

If I could turn back time
(Du du du du)
If I could find a way
(Du du du du)
I'd take back all the words that would hurt you, and you'd stay.

If I could reach the stars
(Du du du du)
I've give them all to you
(Du du du du)
And you'd love me LOVE ME like you used to do
Whooooaaaa....

Sorry.

I'll go away now.

David Unsworth's last minute winner against Hull....followed twelve months later by David Unsworth's penalty for Wigan

I'll always regret the board not backing Spackman and selling the players out from under him, that squad could have walked the division and were playing some great foolball when it all fell apart like a wet cake.

Last game of the season 1994 at Chelsea, Mark Stein's last minute winner, which, along with other results and cheaters, sent us down, very much against the odds.

I was recently told that if the club had paid up front for the South Stand the cost was approx £750k, as it was it ended up costing somewhere in the region of £17m.

Well I was under the impression that the interest payments were in the region of £1m per year, and I'm talking in the late 1970's and into the 1980's. Jesus, if that's true, when you add managers like Harry Haslam and Jimmy Sirrell no wonder Sheffield United ended in Division Four and took 14 years to get back to the top division.

Quite a few down the years but two in my mind from the PL season. The Friday when it was announced West Ham were not to be deducted points only fined, then on the Saturday went to Wigan with renewed optimism and won 3-0. Also the day Liverpool went to Fulham with a team of unknowns prior to the champions league game and lost 1-0 which gave Fulham their only win in the run in. Fulham had potentially the hardest run in of all the teams at the bottom but got a helping hand from Benitez.
