Anyway, the main point is why play someone who isn’t going to be with us much longer instead of someone who needs the minutes and apparently is going to be staying with us?

Wilder doesn’t do sentimentality so I’m really surprised he did what he did on Sunday.

As I said, Wilder did plan to give Billy some time but the keeper situation and probably the fact that we didn't have to chase the game, changed that. Bash for Rodwell (given his lack of match fitness) was always on the cards, which left us with one substitution. I guess it was a simple choice of closing the game out with Stearman or bringing Billy on just for the hell of it. Anyway, we have one fit and healthy Billy chomping at the bit for West Ham.

I was just about to say the same, it sends mixed messages to Billy. On the one hand Wilder is saying he wants him to stay, but when the opportunity arises to give him 90 minutes, Clarke gets the start.

I think the fact he brought him on against Liverpool, told the media he wasn't going anywhere, and didn't risk him in a game where he rested as much of his first team as he could, is a pretty consistent message.

Well that's a different point entirely to the ridiculous idea that Sharp will somehow be getting mixed messages based on not playing in a cup match when he got game time against Liverpool a few days earlier.

I heard Wilder less than a week ago say along the lines that "I don't want Billy to leave and he doesn't want to leave so unless he comes banging on my door saying he wants more first team opportunities, which he hasn't, then that's that."

I don't see how, without any further quotes how SSN arrives at this one.

I am lead to believe that Billy Sharp is deeply disappointed at the way he has been treated this season , and he has every right to be so .

There is no evidence whatsoever that he has lost any of his predatory instincts or ability to score goals which made him such a force in the Championship just nine months ago .

That being the case , it must be deeply frustrating and annoying for him to have to sit and watch a player who is not even a striker in Robinson given so many opportunities in that role at his expense , to little or no effect .

I have little doubt that , had Billy been given the same amount of game time , he would have notched up at least 6 goals and contributed more to helping others do so .

If he does leave it will be our loss and some other clubs gain and a bad mistake on our part , particularly since we are not overly blessed with players with the natural ability to put the ball in the net , which could become crucial in the second half of the season .

That’s a very naive view. I heard Wilder say this and I’m sure Wilder doesn’t want Sharp to leave BUT he’s actively weaning him off the club by not giving him game time. That will inevitably lead to Sharp moving on if regular football is promised elsewhere.

it makes perfect sense if:

a). Wilder plans to start Billy v West Ham and therefore wants to keep him fresh.
OR
b). Wilder wants to piss him off sufficiently so that Billy moves on of his own accord.

Probably puts me in the Silly Billy camp, but one goal from open play in the last 360 mins of PL action suggests a bit of a re-jig or at least a consideration thereof is due so why decrease our options up front now?

He’s not been a consistent player/scorer in the Championship for the last few seasons and is a bit hit and miss. I’d have liked him last season when we signed Hogan or Madine but we’ve outgrown this type of player.

Billy Sharp does not want to leave, his appetite is full apart from further Blades opportunities. He's openly said if he can't play for the Blades anymore he's going Sunday league with his mates rather than drop down the leagues.

He is being groomed as Wilders successor.

I think Wilders successor might be the guy currently managing at Rovrum

Billy did an in depth interview with DAZN in which he makes it abundantly clear that he doesn't want to leave. He even says that he hopes he can win a new contract. Whether things have changed since then I don't know.
