It’s not the rules that we’ve got an issue with, it’s the inconsistencies in how they’re applied.
If VAR has ultimate authority on offsides, then EVERY potential offside should have an advantage played until VAR has been consulted and reached a decision.
Sack off linesmen all together because the flags are causing confusion and players are instinctively distracted/switch off.

I used to get pissed off at referee decisions but I kind of got over it because of the human error element. I get that mistakes are made but when a linesman is blatantly going against instruction to keep the flag down which changes the course of the action then the game is totally gone. This wasn’t a mistake it was completely against the rules.

It seems like the memo to clubs is that the linesman keeps his flag down unless he is 110% sure. With a message like that it's easy to see why the players stopped when the flag went up.

Credit to Shelvey for playing to the whistle, but he didn't celebrate like he'd just scored a goal and neither did the Newcastle fans. They all expected it to be chalked off.

They need consistency where if the flag goes up, the whistle goes and if the flag goes up the linesman has to be 110% sure - as per the memo.

It won’t because we’re not high profile and it didn’t occur in a high profile marquee game...it’ll take Liverpool to get shafted and tears from Klopp before any adjustments are made.
We shouldn’t even acknowledge the existence of linesmen...they are extinct, pointless, obsolete, put them out to pasture

Linos were told not to flag unless 100 per cent sure. He stopped we stopped.

This should have been stopped by the ref and restarted with a drop ball

It’s the inconsistency not knowing what to do. At wolves, flag goes up, ref whistles, Jota, I think runs into Henderson, goes to VAR for a penalty!
Tonight, mcgoldrick bundled over in box, flag up, ref gives offside. For every linesman’s flag (close calls) tonight the ref went with everyone of them except the second ‘goal’ - how on earth are the players supposed to know.
New rule, subs off nearest line, ref allows him to walk across whole pitch.
Our drop ball, on edge of our box, gives it to them!

So the ref is saying is ignore the flag, yet on ever other occasion he blew his whistle when the flag went up. Yet this one time, even though he wasn't in line to overrule it, he put his whistle in his mouth, but didn't blow it.

Normally yes but this isn’t normal circumstances. The Premier League have broken VAR to the point that the officials have no idea what they are doing, the players have no idea what the officials are going to do.

I don’t blame our players for stopping one bit given that the linesman has already flagged earlier in the game and the ref blew straight away. Not only that he’d kept the flag down on other occasions and only flagged when the ball was dead. All three of them were completely fucking clueless as to how to officiate the game tonight.

All this play to the whistle is irrelevant when you look at how the game had gone from the minute Newcastle took the lead.

They’d been time wasting from the second they scored and Shelvey knew exactly what he was doing. There was no intention of ‘playing to the whistle’ even though the ref hadn’t blown it on this occasion. He was doing it to waste time!

Ref even went up to him after he’d put it in the back of the net, probably to tell him to stop time wasting.

If used correctly VAR can and will become a success long term IMO. The problem is the tinkering with football rules (I.e it’s handball if a striker does it accidentally but not a defender) and more so the fact that our referees just can’t make there minds up just how to interpret VAR. They switch from one week to the next and nobody has a fuckin clue where we stand right now. 1st phase, second phase, flag up, keep it down etc..... Mike Riley has made a real rod for his own back and now hasn’t the bollocks to admit he’s fucked up. If we aren’t careful it will ruin the very game it was meant to help

If the flag stays down it changes the whole dynamic of the attack. He may still have scored, we'll never really know.

The flag went up and it should only have gone up if the offside is beyond doubt - I'm talking daylight between players.

If I walk in the house piss wet through and tell the Mrs I'm 100% sure it's raining, I don't expect her to check the security cameras to make sure I'm not mistaken.

The same for VAR. The ref has to trust his assistant that the decision is beyond doubt and blow the whistle.

Always taught to play to the whistle before VAR so nothing really has changed in that regard.

The problem I have is that VAR is not being used for clear and obvious errors. As per the Lundstram offside if it’s that close it should stay with the infield decision as per cricket.
Seriously, get rid of it or apply it properly.
