I agree with that reasoning. When I tried to learn what players were on what wages, I found that the top earners were Sharp and McBurnie. That's open to interpretation of course, but I hope it means that the club is managing the rewards effectively in the way you suggest. The thing is with Egan is that he's just turned 27, and has already had an horrific injury that nearly ended his career. As much as he enjoys the craic, he knows that he's got 6 years left of a career, one in which he's not really done much. He basically has two contracts left. The the next is the last chance of a big one in terms of either wages or wages & signing on fee. With the numbers we're talking about, that could be a difference of £3m in his pocket when he retires. The kind of money that makes a big difference to how you & your family live.
I'm not surprised that teams like Everton are nibbling at him, just as they liked the look of Jags all those years ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if he gives it serious thought. As IIYB rightly says, it's now up to the top table at United to protect our assets and construct pay & conditions that stop the predators; a fair basic with very good bonuses.
Easy for me to offer advice, I'm already retired and my heads above water. Not a decision I wold like to make at his age.
