Brum played him as a winger too. He was so good at it that they loaned him out to Burton and then released him to come to us.

Square pegs and round holes, it really is that simple. Duffy is a genius in a free midfield role behind the strikers. Anywhere else he doesn't have the pace or strength to consistently beat defenders.

Surely you would only take Duffy if you'd seen him with us and knew what he could do. Playing him anywhere else is just daft.

It's a bit like Adkins bringing on Coutts on when we are losing at home and sticking him on the wing.
 
Reading articles from all over the world about our system and our players has got me thinking about Duffy again. What a fuckin idiot he was to jump ship for Stoke. Just imagine if he'd have been in the side these last couple of games. Rightly or wrongly, the journos from around the world would have been chomping at the bit to write about him and his rise from Marine, Prescott Cables etc.

Now the guy is just a old, past it, bit part player at the lower end of the Championship. It's such a shame because he could have had a fantastic legacy.

Lessons to be learned!

Don’t neasecarily think it’s greedy to want a last payday and some longer term security. He’s been on good money recently but it’s not like he’s been on 10k a week for his career after starting in non league etc.

My issue is why he ended up on loan? Wilder said he claimed he had options - but apparently none that wanted him permanently with say a 3 year deal???

His ability to get a longer deal only declines as he gets a year older, especially if he’s not playing for stoke. So it’s almost lose lose for him to be on loan somewhere ....

Just don’t get they this has played out, especially as he’s forced his way back into the side at least 3 times and seen off plenty of competition. 90% chance I reckon he would have got on the pitch sat if he’d still been here

There's clearly been friction between Wilder and Duffy for some time.
Without knowing all the facts, I would back Wilder.
It would "appear" that the issues were contract, money and agent i.e. money.

I get the impression wilder never liked him. I don’t think Duffy liked being subbed after 75 mins and wilder seemed to drop him more than his form warranted.
 
If he'd stayed, and forced his way into the side, or even just been an impressive sub, he'd have probably earned himself a very good one year extension.

His flounce has meant that the best case scenario for him, at 33, is having an exceptional season at Stoke, and getting a decent short contract with them.

Gutted at how it's all gone, but the guy's still a legend. Central to our success over the last few years and I wish he was around for this season.
 
Thought the situation was saved when everybody else threw beer in, we all see it differently I guess.
 



best thing to come out of this - the rest of the squad deepen their understanding that chris wilder ain't nuttin ta fuck wit.

Great player. Like dc_blade said, we have a position named after him, that's impressive. I'll always be grateful for how good he was and disappointed that it ended like it did.

But. Freeman has replaced him, and offers loads more defensively. Didsy and Robbo would always be ahead of him. There will be a couple of home games where we are on top and will miss having Duffy to dictate play, create space, drift past players. All that good stuff. But the majority of the time, he's not in the matchday squad unless you leave Billy or another striker out.

And this is exactly the kind of thing that's taken him to stoke, and all but ended a career that has seen him rise to the prem, only to fuck it all up due to greed and impatience!!
But, if these are the people he listens too, then maybe it was all just waiting to happen!!

Great player as he was for us, he’s fucked up. Whether he’s done this off his own back or following advice from someone else he’s been very foolish, and should have been doing all he could to apologise and return to how things were. All I can say is that it sounds like whatever went off was more than him suggesting to Wilder he would love to be negotiating a new contract, it must have been much more aggressively done for Wilder to drop him like that.

It’s amazing that when a player leaves for pastures new, no matter what the reason, it automatically means he isn’t good enough for us or he still couldn’t do a great job for us, it’s laughable.

Duffy was and is a brilliant player in the role he played for us, there was nothing at all to suggest he couldn’t do it at the next level up.

Him and us have moved on and GLTTL but let’s not pretend he couldn’t still do a great job.

He’s one of the finest players in his position to pull on the red and white stripes and I’m so glad I’ve been here to see it and such a shame how it’s ended up. I still think we would’ve needed him at times this season.

He was the wrong side of 30 by some way and I suspect that CWAK and the strawberry blonde coach had sufficiant data available to suggest that it was a case of diminshing returns.

The period of time in which he could do his thing was decreasing. Last season he usually managed 60 mins, rarely 70 mins.

He’s not pulling any trees up at Stoke is he? which is strange.

This season we’ve needed to go up a level, and Freeman mk2 is a suitable replacement.

Coupled with the above, if he was bolshy, then it was the right time to end the relationship. GLTTL and all that & thanks for the memories.

Wilder was trying to put together multi-million pound bids and he needed to set a tone in which all his players would fall in line. That last thing he could afford to do was lose a negotiation with Mark Duffy. The manager's put his principles out in the open and said if players don't truly want to play for the Blades, and if they feel they'd be better off elsewhere, he's fine with them going. It's daft to put that to the test at a time where Wilder has to know if he caves then every player in the squad will demand the same deal, and players coming in for big transfers will also up their asking price.

Duffy was a real fans' favourite and an important player to the team. He might've been in Sharp's position, having to wait for his chance, but I'm sure he could've got some game time already if not as the season went on. At the very least we would've seen him as a great option off the bench.

And I wouldn't hold it against him if he felt that he needed to do what's best for him right now, either financially or in terms of football. It's just a shame it's left a bit of a sour note on what should've been a hero's farewell.

The lesson is never force someone's hand unless you hold the goods.

No. That’s the function of those hoodwinked by the Leave Liars to jump off a cliff without looking. They’ll (quite literally) pay the price whilst Smogg and Co laugh at them over a magnum of champagne. Sad but self-inflicted.

I tend to agree, I thought at the time that Wilder and Knill were not 100% certain about Duffy this season and started bringing in more players, maybe Duffys approach tilted a 50/50 decision the way it went., shame but as always we move on.
