Talking about testimonials in THIS THREAD about Geary, got me thinking that it's been a while since we had one. Wasn't the last one for Simon Tracey and before that, Dane Whitehouse?

It seems in these times of players lasting a season before moving on, no one actually earns a testimonial any more. And with the wages they earn, no one actually needs one the way they used to... when the profits were a parting shot to get the player set up in their "retirement".

Now, love him or loathe him, Monty first signed his contract with United in July 2000, which makes this his tenth year at the Blades... surely that's testimonial time should he still be here come the summer? He might not need the money, but could choose to support local charities here in Sheffield and maybe in his home town of Leeds?

How about a revival of the Anglo-Scottish cup in reference to his north of the border ancestry? It's hardly like Scottish players are going to be doing anything this summer

He's certainly earnt it with his years of service and commitment to the cause, testimonials are something i always associate with players whom have recently retired or plan to move on which hopefully wont happen with montelele for a while yet but him, geary, morgan and kenny all deserve one i think.

How long was Kozy at the club before he left? As i recall did he come from Derby with someone called Hunt?
Loyalty in football is very rare these days, Monty certainly is that for us.

Paddy was signed in 2002, Morgs in 2003, Geary was signed in 2004. Testimonials are generally held on 10 years service (which when you think about it, is a player committing most of their playing life to one club) or retirement... so while their effort can't be faulted, they'll have to wait a couple of years yet :)

From 1999 to 2007.

Fair play, always thought it was a just a ceremonial decision based on the player, i think these days it should be shortened to 5 as thats rare enough lets be honest, theres still time though for the players mentioned...

As has already been said, a player like Monty no longer needs a testimonial for the money anymore. It would be a nice gesture though for him, but I always associate testimonials for players on their last legs or who have had career ending injuries. I think it would be a bit weird to have a testimonial for a player who is fully fit and has another six years or so left in him....how old is Monty? I still think he's about 24 years old!

that boo radley n dingledog are stirrin it !............

i luv our gert n she knows it !:p

Monty is 28.
If I remember correctly Simon Tarcey's testamonial was after about 11 or 12 years rather than 10.
They could wait until Monty is 30 and is nearer the end of his United career.
I will go whenever it is though.

14-15 years actually

Tracey signed in Oct 88, played his last game in April 2002, but remained on United's books until Summer 03. His testimonial was in August 03.

For players like Monty in the modern age where a big retirement pay-off isn't needed, unlike players in the past, perhaps he coul;d do the same sort of thing as Niall Quinn did, and give the proceeds to a charity. I think Shearer did the same thing too.

Monty won't need the money, but a big wedge to, say, the Children's Hospital would be a nice touch.

I was a touch slimmer for Simon's testimonial than I am now, but I was the only bloke on the South Stand who wore a keeper's shirt in particular admiration.

Stupid thing to do in August really. It was like a personal sauna, and with the shirt I was wearing, I looked like I'd been in a paintball fight with every Dulux employee in the country.

Ahh yes i remember i had that particular keepers jersey. Classic.

Funniest thing from Saturday's match was when the ball broke to Monty, he picked it up at pace, bearing down on the 18 yd box... the whole of the Kop willing him forward, with cries of shoot, he pulled back the trigger, Boro defenders and Keeper Quivering at the thought of what Monty may unleash....

and bang, his composure disappeared in an instant and he lets off a stormer of a shot.... only for it to fly into row AA, narrowly missing the post on the Kop...

You got the sense that everyone was wishing and hoping the ball into the net, but when it innevitably went flying into the crowd it was greeted with an expectant cheer and a slight chuckle by many.

Everyone wants him to score and one day he'll bag one from distance and it'll be a screamer. Just don't think its coming anytime soon.

Even Caspers idea of bigger goals wouldn't help him.

He's already done it v Sheffield FC in a pre-season friendly about 18 months ago. Not a prayer for our Nick in the near future as a result. I really hope I'm wrong though .....

Nearly 3 and a half years since he last scored any sort of goal (v Birmingham in the League Cup on 24/10/06) and over 4 years since he got a league goal (v Stoke on 31/12/05).

Very long time for a midfield player who has played as much as he has...

Random point...

Why are we all giving away Monty's testimonial money on the basis he doesn't need it? Doubtless he's a higher earner at the moment, but the poor lad may be totally unemployable as anything else. **insert jokes here**

Let him keep the lot if he wants.
