I've tried to Google it. It seems it varies from station to station. BBC stations pay £13 a minute apparently. I imagine that Brooklands Radio via Mixcloud is considerably less.

It's all about predicted number of listeners GB, rural stations will pay a pittance of the big city companies, but to the musicians concerned they'll be grateful for any play. There's a methodology that I used to be familiar with, but in essence it all comes down to the number of ear-holes a radio station reckons tunes in on a regular basis.

I remember back in the 80s local BBC stations were heavily restricted in the amount of music they could play because of the royalty cost. There was a decent living to be had from music in those days, now long gone.

Change is one of the few givens, and when it comes to the entertainment business, especially music, just as you get used to something along comes change to disrupt and reconfigure the basics. Often it's done re-actively, they don't see certain things coming, hence they're caught with their knickers down and are playing catch-up, by which time what they imagined was their audience finds other platforms of greater interest.

I'm still quite old school so not that representative of what's happening today, but I'm aware of this and don't worry a great deal about new ways of listening to music. Even after all these years I still retain an enthusiasm for music and creativity. It refreshes my taste-buds which is essential for me.

I’ve bought much of my record collection again on CD because
1. It means I won’t damage them further.
2. I don’t have to turn it over after 20 minutes, I can just stick the album on and listen to all of it.
3. Can stick them on my phone.

Doesn't that make it difficult to put your phone in a pocket ?

It's interesting how attitudes towards Maupay have evolved on this thread. A few weeks ago just about everyone on here was in love with the idea that we should sign him. Now we are getting negative comments about him - and why? Because he hasn't signed yet, despite it looking "nailed on" a few weeks ago. It's frustrating yes, but he's a very good player and I'd still like us to sign him and I won't be getting all mardy about it just because it's not happened yet. I don't take that as a sleight on my club, I just think there's probably a lot of other stuff going on which has confused the situation. If it works out in our favour - fantastic! If it doesn't, then no problem.

(I saw this gorgeous bird on the dance floor. I glanced at her, she glanced at me. Wow! I just had to have her. I strolled over and asked her to dance - she just looked at me and turned away. The ugly cow!).

Young bands don’t make money from making CDs as the listening is too limited to the person buying it. In fact it can become more popular with a wider audience. when the argument is put forward that ‘you only earn a tenner from it in a year’ it is time to consider another profession as in real terms it would equate to a cd, to put it bluntly you are not popular and like most bands will not likely succeed , do it as a hobby. Hope you get a break through by the way.

Well Spotify pay per stream, which needs to last a minimum of 30 seconds (pretty much the industry standard across all streaming platforms). They pay between $0.006 and $0.0084 per stream, depending on how many you get.

I'm 58 Andy, and well past it! It doesn't affect me at all. It was possible to make a bit of money in the past but its the young bands I feel sorry for, much harder for them than it was for old duffers like me.

Agree with that.

Play in a covers band and (if you are decent) you can get paid gigs in pubs and clubs.

Young bands with original material, lucky if you get a few free drinks sometimes.
