You're bemoaning that he's down in the pecking order, and his goal record at championship is poor - I understand that.

However, that doesn't tell the story. People (not saying this is definetly you) have a tendency to check Wikipedia for his goal ratio, and jump to a conclusion.
I think there are plenty of reasons why this could actually be a decent signing.

And as for Matt Smith, I think he's probably a more clinical player than Washington and may have scored more goals, but let's be honest: we'd have to adjust our style of play: he's a target man, and nothing more unfortunately.
Oh I don't check Wiki when I'm comparing players I use whoscored - gives you a breakdown of a players actual play. I admit players can do a lot of off the ball work that isn't noted, and Washington does. He works hard and runs the channels. But he just doesn't score goals at Championship level - that's the top and bottom of it - we already have Lavery for that.

When I've seen him before I've thought he's not actually a bad player, especially for Peterborough - but he just doesn't score goals at this level.

I just can't pretend I think it's a good signing or get excited about it when we've been linked with much better names all summer and consistently said we're only after players who improve us - and ended up with QPR's 5th choice. Had we signed him earlier in the window I probably wouldn't be as disappointed.

What are Lavery's Championship stats? Has he even played in the Championship before?

He has, for Wednesday, tbf.

I think it's important to note whether or not the conditions of 'only wanting to sign a proven championship striker' actually came from Wilder though...

He will do nicely i expected another donaldson esq signing gives us variety last year of contract as well perm bargain ? plus millwall after him which is good. They can spot a bargain. All the lavery lovers just want to look at his goals compliation .. Enough said . We are improving steadily Happy with this

Don't you think it's a coincidence that since we were linked with Johnson, Stevens has improved? Granted Norwood has helped but, If we don't sign genuine competition for him, he will slip back into the comfortable state he did last season and then that's when his form dropped.

Absolutely. And in an ideal world, of course we’d be looking to improve every position. But CW has to look at it and work within his budget; he cant improve every position. Currently at LWB there's Stevens and Lafferty. If there are injuries/emergencies, surely Freeman or Baldock can switch over there? Even JOC or Kean Bryan in extreme circumstances. Its hardly ideal, but its manageable.

Meanwhile , up front, theres Billy who’s started well; McGoldrick who’s record tells us he’ll miss 1 in 4 with injuries; Clarke who’s already injured (we dont know how long for) and Lavery.

If possible, yeah- lets bring Johnson, Hogan and Washington in. But its clearly not, so CW has to make the decision; bring in a third LWB, or really strengthen up front. I know what I’d do.

You've assumed that just because his goal record is poor at QPR, that "he just doesn't score goals at this level." - plenty of players struggle at one club, and blossom at others, and you seem to be flat-out ignoring that possibility.

I'm not asking you to pretend you like him either, you're free to get as upset as you want.

I've just given you 3 reasons and you've chosen the one you can try and argue. Try looking at his stats.
Lavery's are better in the championship - no - really.

Worse goal per game ratio than the Pigs’ battering ram Nuhiu. How can this be spun as a good signing?

Erm... he is literally Caolan Lavery with a bit less hair.

We’ve let relegation threatened QPR sign Hemed and Wells and signed their fifth choice striker instead.

Is this a fucking joke?

No, you are. We didn’t ‘let’ QPR do anything. We have no control over what they do.

When Conor Washington was at Posh, people on messageboards were begging United to show some ambition and gerrimsigned.

Sky Sports saying Washington's contract has been terminated, so he'll come on a free. Let's not forget that QPR paid £3m for him just a couple of years ago.

It's a possibility, but then again so is Caolan Lavery scoring goals suddenly, so is Ched coming back and scoring 20.

A lot of things are 'possible' in football but they also happen to be unlikely.

Why is it not possible? Money yes, but with Washington being a free transfer it allows us 2 more loans if we can afford it.

"Back-up striker for a team expected to do worse than us this year" is a lazy, lazy reason to be angry. Judge the player on his own merits. And trust Wilder, that's the least he deserves. We need depth in any case. This might not be the only striker we sign today.

Upgrade on Lavery for £0 - works for me.

Not every signing is going to be "the one" that fires us to promotion - it's a squad game and we need another body up front.

Well it's just as well you're not a manager or head of recruitment then.

So in your opinion you actually think Lavery is a better player? All I can say in response to that is thank God your opinion doesn't count for anything.

On paper, I'd leave him where he is and go for the strengthening the team as a whole option in preference.

But Tufty seems to be able to improve players, so we'll have to wait and see.

Carlos reckons that a PL team bid £10 mil for Adam reach ... and the S6 club turned it down.

There, I knew that'd cheer you up.

It's a free transfer, they have terminated his contract, this will allow us to bring in 2 more loans. Naughty

Fucking hell, that's surprising. Very charitable. Why wouldn't they just get what fee they can in January?

Wonder if we're making any sneaky payments to them?

But if it's effectively a free transfer, what a great piece of business! A £3m player for free a year before his contract ends.

I'm personally happy if we're bringing any new striker in. McGoldrick is injury prone and doesn't look like he can last 90 minutes. All it takes is an injury to Billy or Leon and we're looking very stretched. Both of the aforementioned seem to go through lean periods and purple patches, and both are the wrong side of 30. L
