Transfer Deadline Day is now only 13 days away and we all know we are desperately short up front.

Assuming Waghorn is off to Derby and the likes of our new targets like Powell don't come off, what position do we all think we're in? I seriously don't want us to panic buy and piss away most of the Brooks money. At the same time the following options (Clarke - Sharp - McGoldrick (plus Lavery)) seem pretty weak assuming Clarke isn't going to be the prolific Clarke in the first half of last season.

What's Wilder's plan if he can't recruit anyone of sufficient quality and he refuses to buy in from abroad? Is it going to be Clarke and McGoldrick upfront or will he try and resurrect Clarke and Sharp? We are desperately short of options and I'm sure Tufty is doing everything he can but it does make me anxious for the start of the season.

What are people's thoughts, no one else worried?

We all want goals but I really want to replace Brooks in terms of flair, pace and creativity as well. Age doesn't bother me massively, I don't know what people think Sharp and Leon have done over the Summer but they are only 3 months removed from the season of their careers.
I'd like another striker in 100% but getting that youngster from liverpool in is still a deal for me.

Part of me to be honest doesn’t mind less options as it gives players a chance to get some consistency, it cannot help being pulled in and out of the squad all the time. I felt last year for instance towards the end Billy was constantly left out, and Wilder was putting in Donaldson and Wilson all the time rather than bringing him in (who were less than convincing).

But then equally I agree that should one or two get injured it does then cause.

It’s a tough call I’d rather have quality rather than quantity!!

Does it expire if it’s not spent this summer?

Nope......but there's always a chance it might be "too late", to spend it later. whether that be, being consigned to mid table mediocrity or struggling closer to the bottom.
We'll have to wait and see, but I can only assume as usual that the winter transfer window prices will be even more over inflated as they usually are, so a possibility of throwing extra money away.

I’m massively concerned. Without Coutts I thought we tried hard but other teams figured us out and without his quality they were able to stop us. We are relatively unchanged, certainly going forward.

Without some real quality (and pace) up top I fear we’ll be figured out and find it hard to win games.

If people like Clarke, Sharp and Duffy don’t perform at their very best, and often, I fear a mid-table at best season without adding some class. The division is stronger this year too.

* I do not think we will be relegated, obviously.

As the window closure edges closer clubs, players and agents get more desperate to get deals done. I still feel confident our Chris has something up his sleeve. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we still ended up with Waghorn while Derby dice with FFP. I’m sure he will get at least 1 in, maybe someone no one has even mentioned or rumoured yet. He keeps his cards close to his chest.

If we don’t get anyone in we have 3 strikers at our club that will do a job. We have a lack of depth in that area but they’re all decent championship strikers. They did a perfectly good job last year.

I’d be more upset if we were facing the start of a season without Fleck or JOC.

Last season we shipped some needless goals at the back, (hopefully addressed by the arrival of Egan) and also, despite loads of possession, failed to convert enough chances up top.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest to me that going forward we will be any different, it will be the same.....overlap, look for the pass, go backwards, overlap, look for the pass, recycle......if we got found out in the second part of last season, (which we did) then we are starting on the back foot for me..

My main concern is that it only takes one injury (which is quite likely to happen considering McG's record plus all of their ages) and we are left hoping that Lavery can produce something off the bench. Alternatively are we hoping more is going to come from our AM's like Holmes. Or are the likes of Holmes and Leonard going to head out into the abyss, never to be seen again.

I certainly wouldn't bank on it being available in January and beyond.

Can’t see why it wouldn’t be, if it’s available now and, by January, the need to spend it may be more urgent (either to go up or stay up, depending on your POV)

Pretty much every striker in the UK has been mentioned this year, I went over the leading Championship scorers from 2 years ago to make a point to another poster and there were only 2 who weren't in the Premiership or hadn't already been mentioned for excessive amounts. And then I put these 2 forward as possibilities.

Don't Panic!

The question is......

Is it easier to buy a goalscoring centre-forward who doesn't want astronomical wages or raise a man from the dead?

That's today's ''Thought Provoking Question...''
you need to go and have a lie down ;)

I think we'd be fine up front if I could see where chances are coming from. Billy, Leon and McG are all excellent finishers so what we need is someone who's going to put it on a plate for them.

Fleck can do that, as shown against Inter, drives forward, plays balls to feet with players facing goal.

I haven't been impressed to be honest elsewhere in that regard. Duffy has been decidedly meh in preseason, Holmes looked lively the other day but is still an unknown quantity.

So if I was going to spend money, I'd be looking for a Happy Shopper Eden Hazard rather than a CF, to get balls in to feet in the box, or play stuff across goal for sliding strikers. Any combo of Billy, Leon and McG will put away tap ins all day long.

There were glimpses of some very nice play though against Inter, so I'm not pessimistic, I just forsee a similar season, struggling to get over the line in games because we don't score enough and always concede.

The one thing we definitely need to sort is strikers being on the wing and wing backs being in the box, or generally anyone but a striker.

So many times last season, 6 yards out, just the keeper to beat and who'd it fall to? Baldock haha.. fair play he usually kept it on target but straight down the keepers throat.

top scoring front line in the division last season?

Agreed - anxiously waiting for news that we can bring in the quality we need to go one better, before the window shuts.

Personally think we’re strong throughout the keepers, defence and midfield, and the way Wilder has us playing means we’ll dominate teams and create chances again this season.

I’m my opinion we lack the extra flair, pace and quality to finish teams off, which is ultimately why we fell away last season though not taking our chances.
And with Brooks going out, that weakens us greatly, even just having the option from the bench.

Have full faith that Wilder knows exactly what we need.

defence was what let us down last season we were ahead most games .. one game leon scored a hat trick.. and lost!

I disagree - I think we are a bit gung-ho so we can expect to concede at least once a game. There were more instances in the 2nd half of the season though of us not taking chances rather than falling to pieces at the back. (There were exceptions to that and the Millwall game at home stands out where the defence cost us big points).

Agree there. How many games did we make hard work of? Leeds away should have been wrapped up within the first half hour, we should have got a few in in the Villa home game etc.

I think we probably only shit the bed defensively a handful of times where as we missed chances in all but a handful of games.

PANIC!!!!

Few things...let’s assume Waghorn goes to Derby!!
Why not assume he comes to us? Equally likely.

Does anyone really think we will end the transfer window without further striking additions? Anyone at all...and be sensible not just argue for arguments sake.

Wilder will bring in at least one striker. FACT

So all of you worriers...chill yer beans. A season isn’t lost in pre season, or by September.
