What is there to lose in having him on trial? Nowt! Also if another player is currently playing hardball over a contract it might make them hurry up in their decision that we could actually look elsewhere!?
Too sensible for this place at the moment.

'Player without a club is offered a trial' shock. Not even like its a shit player either.

The thing that (almost) made me laugh about that article in the Star, is when they say that we are trying, unsuccessfully, to get Hogan from Villa on loan, but Villa don't want to do a loan, so we've turned to McGoldrick instead! Bloody hell! That's a bit like me saying, I've been in the Ferrari dealers and tried to knock them down in price on the Ferrari 458, but they're having none of it. So I've been down to Lookers on Saville Street and got myself a Ford Fiesta instead.

I'm assuming United realise that Villa are up shit-creek without a paddle? I'm assuming they realise that they desperately need to raise cash? I'm even assuming United know that they paid £12M for Hogan and that he's on big wages? If we do know those things, what on earth makes us think, for one moment, that they'd be happy to let him go out on loan? They'll want shut of him for a fee - for a big fee I'd imagine - maybe at least half of what they paid for him - and then the buying club will need to find over £30k a week to pay him.

I admire the tenacious spirit of United in this case, with the same level of admiration that I would have watching a little Fox Terrier snapping at a Rottweiler. You have to admire it's courage and fearlessness, but you know also that it hasn't a chance in hell of winning that particular battle.

Although McGoldrick's presence in South Yorkshire is not linked to developments surrounding Hogan, his arrival underlines Wilder's desire to strengthen United's attacking options ahead of the new Championship season, which begins next month.

Wow, talk about an agenda.

A year ago I’d have been happy to see us spend to bring him in. If we’re talking a nominal fee to add to existing options, assuming he impresses on the trial I’d be ok with it.

Agree with the majority on here - a good player who is an improvement on Utd's strikers bar Sharp and Clarke. He'll just need to stay fit but if he does, I can see him getting 8-10 goals next season providing he gets enough chances.

He will get around 14 goals, Sharp 12, Clarke 16
Need Fleck and Duffy to score half a dozen
And would be interesting to see if we can score from a corner this coming season

It's touching, it really is, the blind loyalty of some who won't hear a word of criticism about out great club. It's all about agendas yada, yada, yada.....Improved budget, 12m fee for Brooks and peope wonder why theres critisism that a 30 yr old injury prone striker is on trial....really????

So you don't think it's a bit silly that some posters have basically re-written The Star article in their own head to suit an argument?

Also, those making criticism at the DM trial are also the same ones who would say the signing of Hogan would show ambition - bit hypocritical.

That isn't the point. The point is that people are assuming this is the only signing we will make up top all summer, and comparing it to rumours. Wilder has repeatedly said we are still in for top-end players, so unless people think he's lying they need to chill the fuck out and appreciate this for what it is - a good squad signing.

Haha - good point about scoring from corners. Same goes for other set pieces although I'm not sure McGoldrick would win many towering headers from either - more would be needed from the CBs, all of whom scored less than would be expected last season.

I'd be disappointed any very underwhelmed if McGoldrick is the only striker signed over summer, especially with Evans going on loan. That was my thinking McGoldrick's chances potentially being somewhat limited and therefore directly related to his goal tally.

People moaning about McGoldrick being injury prone but Scott Hogan is more injury prone than him FFS.

Supermarkets have a special shelf for damaged goods, that's where we appear to be shopping while £4 upfront will fund a high court battle of egos.

Please prove me wrong :(

30 years old and people are implying he's too old, really? when a player turned 30 in the 70's he usually had a couple maybe 3 years left, today IF a player is fit you expect him to play until at least 35, look at Ronaldo, he's just gone to juve for about 100 million plus what ever huge wage he's on and he's way past 30, this isn't about the players ability its about fitness and desire which Ronaldo obviously has, I don't know about mcgoldricks fitness, desire levels but ffs stop going on about a player being 30, its nowhere near a problem

At 30 he'd be the youngster in the strike force! Leon has had a few injuries over the years but for us has being largely injury free. I'm not surprised we're looking at him and worth a trial. We've signed many a free transfer 30 plus player that has gone on to do very well over the years. Wayne Allion, Gordon Cowans, Stuart McCall and Bob Booker spring to mind.

Even if we spent the entire £12m Brooks fee on the players we needed we wouldn't be able to look anywhere but the damaged goods shelf. You don't get proven Championship players on that budget.

Hogan, Gallagher are both on that damaged shelf, its the best we can possibly hope for, so why some are setting their expectations higher I don't know.

For exactly the same reason the Rusties were happy to loan out £10m, big waged Rhodes. And still pay a chunk of his wages.

Really can't srs that. I think all 3 would need to play close to 40 games to get those returns. We can't realistcareal play all 3 together

I actually think he will be good as a back up. All I'm saying is I understand the frustration of some.

One interesting factor at play at the minute is Wilders apparent attitude change to signings. Previously he's been very "' if it's all about the money they can f off as they really need to want to play for us." It seems the offers for Gallagher and Hogan have been in for a while and he's giving them a lot of time as he knows they aren't going to come for less.money than they are on.

A quality player. Lovely touch, good vision. And yes he may be 30, but I think a certain B.Sharp and L.Clarke proved a few things last season!!
Saw him for Ipswich last season and we did a job on him. But doesn’t alter anything about the kind of player he is.
And what he brings into the club is something different to what we have already.

The injuries issue...well that’s what medicals, physios and sport science is for. If we trial him and see we can get him right then he could be a gamble worth taking, and be able to take advantage of his situation of being without a salary at present.
Some on here grisly ! Wouldn't be satisfied if we signed Mbappa ( too young not proven ) where's the trust in Wilder gone.
He said he would get the best from his budget Mcgoldrick would be a bonus.

The majority of our players or espeically ones we see as our strongest players were either out of favour somewhere, from a lower league club or picked up on a free.

Had some good players come in from trials.. can remember the absolute tug fest when we had glen little on trial and he ripped Bury a new one with Jordan Robertson of all strikers one pre season!

We threw money about under robson and where did that get us?

How do we know it the players delaying matters ? The clubs are all wheeler dealing and will only release when it suits them! That’s why we’ve delayed Cheds release.

Thing is with a striker of that type of age they are sort of unwanted to a certain extent. If Billy and Leon were mid 20's and had a season like they did last.. losing Brooks this pre season would have been the last of our worries!
