Brentford appear to stronger when negotiating player sales.

Bournemouth have seen their £10m bid for Brentford defender Chris Mepham rejected, according to Sky sources.

The Cherries returned with a fresh approach for the young centre-back after having a £5.5m bid rejected by Brentford during the January transfer window.

But that too has been turned down, with the improved offer still not understood to be close to the Bees' valuation of the player.

We value our players pretty low anyway so as soon as the offer for Brooks was above that of the Walker/Naughton deal then it was done. The new agent has clearly played a part but the lad is on a newly signed 4 year contract. There was certainly more wriggle room in the valuation for sure.

The reality is actually that clubs value our players at what they see as a true value. To them. Name me transfers when a stream of clubs have been in a bidding war for any of our players.

What happens is that excitable fans, not always young but generally are, see World Class players selling for sixty million plus and try and relate that to our player, ignoring the huge difference in class. I did it when I was younger as will others have. However at some point you have to grow up and embrace reality, especially financial, in football.

He takes a look at the team that finished 10th for which Brooks didn't really feature that much. Yes, he provided memorable moments, but these were fleeting given his injury situation.

He then probably looks at offers he has out there and what he can get from Bournemouth.

He adds Gallagher permanently and Mousset on loan as a pacy option to Sharp, Clarke and 5th choice Ched. A definite upgrade on what he had 12 months ago.

He gets Coutts back to pair up with Fleck and he signs Palmer on loan as well as still having Holmes. He's then got back up or competition for Duffy and has depth covering Fleck and Coutts already in the shape of Evans and Lundstram.

He's got a highly-rated keeper at a fraction of the wages he would need for Blackman.

He ends up with cash to spend on upping the competition in defence, possibly bringing in DaSilva on loan and the QPR lad.

He also probably has some change left out of that.

I can see why Wilder might go for that. We've lost that bit of crowd pleasing flair, but every single department looks stronger with the exception of keeper which you'd probably say is about the same.

I was about to mention the glandular fever. It’s a very debilitating illness. It takes a long time to shake it off and it has a habit of creating further problems. Seb Coe, for one, was never the same athlete again.

Whatever those subscribing to the agenda may think, our club is not populated by complete idiots (there are plenty in the crowd though..). This decision will have been thought through. Doesn’t make it right, of course. Time will decide that issue. However, it’s very far from a Brian Deane or Tony Currie moment and once knees have stopped jerking people might want to pause further vitriol until we see where we are in a few months. A controversial view I know, in this Iwantitanimusvavitnow culture that pervades football and society in general.

The other thing to add is that I don’t think even now we know how to necessarily utilise him best in the system we play. The games he played the Duffy role behind two strikers, he played like an individual rather than a team player. We don’t look likely to move back to wingers anytime soon, and from what I’ve seen he’s not suited to play a deeper midfield role. His best games have been playing off a striker (more forward than attacking mid tbh) and in that he’s not had the sort of output that Clarke & Sharp have had. I like Brooks, and think he could probably develop into the Duffy role in time, but if I’m honest and pick our best current XI as it stands I don’t think he’s in it. His development also isn’t guaranteed to happen quickly.

Ultimately, Wilder made it clear when Adams left that if a player wants to go, he’ll let them. Contracts are now simply a means of ensuring we get a fair price, it’s not a guarantee that a player is with us for the full contract – it hasn’t been that for some time. If we’re “a selling club” it’ll be with Wilder’s blessing.

Like all, I’m a bit surprised about this and a bit sad but if the price is 12m + add one then I think that’s a fair representation in the current climate.
A player who no one really knew where he was going to fit into the system that Wilder wants to play. Given time and coaching he could develop in one position but at the moment he is not at the level where we would build a system around him.
On the money side of things, maybe he has looked at his illness last season and thought ‘I’m so close to not having a career in football, one injury, another bout of sickness and my value is 0.’ Maybe he talked to someone like Terry Kennedy and thought that could be me.
