Sheffield United 2-1 Bournemouth: Blades hit back to beat Cherries

Last updated on 9 February 2020

Sheffield United moved up to fifth in the Premier League after fighting back to earn a dramatic win over Bournemouth in blustery conditions at Bramall Lane.

As often happens to us in big matches semi- finals and the like! Lady luck deserts us ! Covid comes along! Playing in an empty Bramall Lane takes away our momentum the rest is history. We must be the biggest nearly men in football.
Covid impacted exactly the same for every club cracks had started to show after Christmas
Yes we were getting results (bar Liverpool) but we were scrapping them out and getting a bit of luck

Covid made every game a training exercise. All the best players pull out the stops in training.
We had nothing else to balance the battle.

Our players who were performing above the sum of their parts were now just playing as expected.

We were punching above our weight ! with the fans a big assist in that dept. empty terraces took away our 12th man and gradually our lack of individual quality kicked in.
It was all down hill from there.

We beat Spurs and Chelsea at home after the restart.

It was poor summer signings and not buying replacements/upgrades that were needed. Robinson replacing O'Connell. Brewster for 23m.

The 1-0s became 0-1s.

Surreal season. Just got to look at Mcburnie breaking away with face and skillfully finishing against Brighton to see how much our players have declined.

Was travelling passing through some Thai village. A local spotted my blades top and said 'Miiister Wilder' with a huge grin. He spoke fck all else English. Completely surreal. I didnt know what to do other than shake his hand and say 'Mr Wilder' back to him. For a split second, United were getting real global press.

The best of times mate, absolutely loved it. Felt like finally we’d have our spell in the sunshine for a few seasons.

We would have made top 6, I'm pretty confident of that. We didn't miss out by much, what was it 5 or 6 points?

I reckon we would have gone to Villa and won, possibly got something at Old Trafford, similar at St James Park, wouldn't have been surprised to have done better vs. Everton at home etc. I also think we would have beat Arsenal in quarter finals at home too.

Covid properly stopped the momentum and I think fitness wise, looking back it may have been unwise to keep the lads constantly pushing in the meantime. Most other clubs just wanted them to stay in shape.

Lastly without covid, it's highly likely that JOC would not have suffered the injury that he did too.

The following season had we made top 6, could have still panned out badly. However when in for players like Watkins, he may have chose us over Villa as we would have been in Europe so who knows. Doesn't matter now!

I actually put real money on us to make the Champions League during that first lockdown. I really bought into the idea that we'd be the fittest team after Project Restart and that we'd be the most up for it. What an idiot! 😂

Conversely, I put real money on us to beat Derby's lowest points total in pre-season just after we sold Ndiaye...still in with a chance!

Heartbreaking. We were so fantastic that season, playing on the front foot, without fear and taking the match to the opposition.
Really thought we were the to stay.

Absolute revisionism some of the above. We were a very organised team with good spirit and an unusual counter attacking style of play. We were always going to get injuries at some point and teams would eventually work out how to counter our tactics.
Covid didnt speed this up as we still had good wins against Spurs, Chelsea and Wolves but we suffered badly from second season syndrome.
We lost key players, failed to capitalise on the initial success by awful recruitment and teams worked out that we couldn’t handle being pressed high up the pitch and we had no plan B.

We've hardly moved on from this line-up. Trying to squeeze every last bit out of players who are now too injury prone.

we need our crowd to raise our obviously lesser players up to compete with players of greater quality as does ant club who cant afford 50 to 100 grand a week players, in a training ground atmosphere the quality players no longer trying to quieten our support, in which case they can play with a lot more freedom
we , THE FANS DO MAKE OUR PLAYERS PLAY BETTER

Once again this highlights how poor our recruitment, or lack of has been, and how ridiculous Wilder's "Greatest ever transfer window" statement was the following summer..... and yet a director of football is not an option.

Don't believe teams ever suss anybody out, if you play well the opponents can't stop you from playing well and you can win games, if you play crap you'll probably lose.
Losing Jack O'Connell was the end for us, as usual we have one player absolutely vital to the entire club and way we play and he gets a career ending injury and we get relegated.

Bad luck, but also bad planning not to have a similar type of player.

Same with Brian Deane, one player that made us play well enough, at least well enough to survive each year, so we sell him without a replacement and got relegated.

If one player is absolutely vital, which unfortunately we always seem to be reliant on when we have our little period of miniscule success it makes sense to get a similar player with the same attributes that can take over.

It wasn't just the absence of O'Connell, we also lost Henderson for the second season.

Those two were a huge part of the defence that served us so well.

That last Norwich game before Covid put us in 6th in the world famous Premier League…Unfortunately the next time we all sat down in BDTBL, was at a Championship game. If you read that in the history books…Nobody would believe it.
