Mick McCarthy

You must be very fond of grotesque anti-football, then. He’s a hoofer. If he, Big Fat Hoofy Bent Sam or Larry Grayson ever turn up at the Lane, I’m off.

I sincerely hope CW stays but if not there’s an obvious choice. A guy who knows that proper football is the way to success. His name, as he pronounces it, is Kook.

Mick McCarthy? Mick Fucking Hoofy McCarthy? I despair.

This rhetoric gets boring pinchy.

Mick McCarthy is a very accomplished manager that not only has promotions on his cv but has also managed to get an Ipswich side with no money or prospects to compete in a very difficult division for years.

The style of football largely depends on what tools you have available. His Sunderland and Wolves sides played some decent stuff because he had decent players. It’s not rocket science.

Was the budget really cut? Or was it a case of Wilder thinking there would be more to spend? I don’t know why he even asked about Mitrovic as I could have told him his wages were beyond us at the moment and I wouldn’t have wanted us to spend £4m on Forshaw anyway
I don’t think Wilder’s stupid and if he is indicating his expectations, in terms of budget, weren’t met then that’s pretty good evidence for me. I’ve been saying for a while that we didn’t invest sufficiently in Jan. Plenty on here disagree with that, fair enough, but now you’ve got the manager hinting at the same thing. Take notice.

Sometimes if you want to increase your chances of getting more you have to set the bar higher than what you may realistically expect to get. I really hope Wilder did push for Mitrovic because that’s exactly the quality of player we should be aiming for to stretch the Board’s expectations of what’s needed.

On another note: I see we are after a young winger from Cambridge United? Burton Albion are also in for him so I suppose we should just give up now eh?

Hoof is exceedingly boring. McCarthy is a hoofer. He would drive me away from the club I’ve supported for over 50 years. Can we not be a little more imaginative than this sleep inducing mediocrity?

He’s one of very few managers that can get something out of an inexpensive group of players at this level. Unless we suddenly find a big transfer kitty I doubt there are many better qualified, other than our Chris whom I hope stays.

A few more references to Dinosaur Dave and this post would have been peak Pinchy.

Me too, especially if Mick Interesting McCarthy is the best alternative.

Many Ipswich fans regarded him as a complete joke, as I understand it. There was no ‘leaving do’ arranged. If he arrived, I’d be having one.

I'll use this thread to tell you what I've heard today anyway

Wilder was extremly pissed off that the January transfer budget was cut from what was originally agreed. Seems this is where the trouble started with him wondering where the club was heading.

McCabes side and The Princes side aren't even on speaking terms

I also saw Gary Megson today. My friend asked if he knew anything about wilder and he said "I've heard he's going "

Think I posted this around Christmas time Roy, I ran into someone I know who is connected to the club and when I asked if there was any news about any potential signings in January, he pulled a face and said that there was trouble brewing in the boardroom and that both sides had fallen out.

I didn't get chance to ask too much more, but I would agree that if it was a budget cut for new players, that could have upset the apple cart, as I assume one side wanted to put money in and the other wouldn't match it?

Wilder was in tears at the end of the Bristol game. When he and the team came over to the fans at full time, he kept having to turn his back on the fans to wipe his eyes. I can't be 100% sure, but I don't think he did his usual "beating his chest, on the United badge" bit, he just seemed to wave and clap the fans.

Having a beer with some Blades in a boozer later that day in Bristol, and one of them just said "think he waved good bye to us all, and that's why he started crying"

I really hope not, it would be shooting-yourself-in-the foot in the most extreme manner.

Mick McCarthy was on Talksport on Monday morning. He was on a train going to Sunderland a couple of days previously. He said it was to pick up a car and was nothing to do with the Sunderland job. Of which he said he has had no contact with the club at all. But that was Monday.

Nothing against McCarthy, he's probably one of the better managerial journeymen doing the rounds. However, that's the problem, these nomadic managers spend their career going here, there and everywhere but ultimately getting nowhere along with the clubs who employ them.

United to their credit broke the mould with Wilder and had some success. Even the pigs did it with Carwash and Adolf (eventually) by thinking outside the Pardew/Pullis/McCarthy/Grayson et al box. Lets hope our next appointment (if it gets to that, fingers crossed it doesn't) is someone we've never fucking heard of before. I would accept this with an open mind and wait to see what happens.

Football fans being known for their rational and balanced thinking.....

Paul Cook is a very good shout imo. Proper manager in the Wilder mold. Hope Sunderland get him.

I like Mick’s honesty. I like his humour and his smilyness. I like all those daft clips of him (007 Mick, Frightened By Nothing Mick, Stirring Cup Of Tea Mick). Most of all, I like the way his nose points a different way to the rest of his face.

But I’m with Pinchy on the rest. His football is shite. And he’s a dingle.

I agree, but it’s topical given that’s his most recent club. Nothing more than that. What do you think of Paul Cook?

Seems to have success wherever he goes but he’s untested at Championship level, as was Wilder. Not sure on the football style, haven’t watched his teams enough.

Disagree, all those managers you mentioned were seen as the brightest young managers earlier in their career, they've been around a bit and have lots of nous and contacts in the game, I'd accept all of those managers you mentioned except Pardew (and the pigs). It's looking like we will have no money next season, so if not Wilder, we need a tried and tested manager who will keep us in the division.
