Given our past history of "recycling" funds raised by player sales ......... I wouldn't hold your breath. This is probably why Tufty was so keen to NOT sell Brookes ...... he knows he won't see the money if he does o_O

My take on it is, there's a lot of complicated shit going on that the likes of me and thee aren't even meant to get our heads around. We can only hope that when the dust settles, we can move forwards from that.

From my own point of view, I think that whoever ultimately ends up in charge, we will all have to be realistic (as bloody usual) about the transfer budget.

Boardroom shenanigans and never enough money, not like any of this is new news is it? And we still keep coming back for more! :)

But you increase your chances. It’s not an exact science, granted, but look at the order at the top of the league and you can kind of see a theme.

It’s the same for the bottom end.

We splashed out in 1985/86, 1996/97 and 2007/08, none of them brought us promotion

Did we honestly though? It's always held up as the start of the rot of the last decade and short hand among Blades for frivolous spending, but it's never rung true with me.

Naysmith came in as part of the jags deal, stayed for three years and joined Huddersfield Town on a bigger wage.
Morgan joined on a free.
Beattie came in for roughly the same money that he went out for, staying 2 years.
Lee Hendrie came in on a free and left after 7 months.
Carney came in for £50k and left for more than that.
Speed came in for £250k
Sharp came in for £3m, part of which was made up of Forte going the other way. Played a season for us, went on loan and then sold for £1.5m to Donny (who must have at least matched his wages).
Ehiogu came in on a free & left after a year.

At the same time Jags left for £4m, Davis £3m, Hulse £1.75m, CKR for £1m, Bromby for £500k, Quinn went, Leigertwood for £1m, Fathy for £700k, Stead for £600k, we averaged 25.5k attendances, we were on parachute payments and won the tevez money.

I appreciate that there are wages & signing on fees to consider, but if the period between the end of the 2006/07 season and the end of the 2007/08 season fucked us over, then god help us.

Beattie was signed for £4m and was sold for a fee that could eventually amount to £3.5m, there's no saying that it did. He was also on a reported £40k a week so he cost roughly £4m in wages for the two years he was here, not including bonuses. The wages of the other players signed would have been a lot higher than previous players as well.

We spent £8.7m on transfer fees in 2007/2008. The paper profit on sales was £7.4m which looking at the accounts means your total figure for sales isn't far away at all. However we had a trading loss of £10m beore profits on sale is assets which was down mainly to player wages. We hadnt won the Tevez money by that time either. It was in the following year at £18.1m and helped with a trading loss of £9m.

2006/7 in the PL generated a profit of just £2m after a £9m loss in the promotion season. We spent £12m on players 2006/7 and £5.3m the year before.
