Forgotten that aspect of Davys, jogged a few memories. Corner Paternoster Row and Charles St. Walked up Charles St when I started work late 50's walked round that corner many a time. Thanks again.

Two storeys high at Manchester Road level, six storeys on the Rivelin Valley side.



Legend has it that the bloke who built it fell out with a teetotal methodist from Stannington. He errected a large substantially built stone pub across the valley as he knew the methodist would see it every day.


Whitbreads until about 1990 then a free house backed by loans from Theakstons, Banks and finally Thwaites. The last landlord was John Chidlaw who may well have featured in other threads on here. as he was a 'character'. RIP.

Now that lovely building is a very odd private residence but at least it is still standing.

Violet gave everybody the evil eye, through a fog of tobacco smoke. It was a dream for browsing and finding stuff but good old Vi seemed to resent anyone being in the shop for more than 10 minutes without buying.

I think the song comes from around 1989 and so predates her death by a good few years just in case anyone thinks I'm some kind of anti-Tory sicko (I am).

Residents of Heeley and Nether Edge, so should be Blades.

Alan Smythe went on to produce some of The Arctic Monkeys stuff (amongst others)...

Always busking on the moor in 87 and genuinely hated Thatcher.

Anyone remember The Zyclones, Trolley Dog Shag (famous bass player), The Sharp Cuts and Hula as bands of that era?

I was in town on the evening they pulled the front of the Gaumont down. A small crowd stood and watched. It was the main cinema I used to go to when I was a kid, saw Star Wars there in 77, amongst many others.
