Yeah I know it's not walkabout, I meant is that the building near the Hallamshire that's just the frontage.

The building in post # 7063 is Mount Zion on Westfield Terrace between West Street and Division Street. When the old Royal Hospital was demolished this was the only bit that was saved and is grade two listed. There is a building behind it but none of that is original.

No pal it's not the building close to the Hallamshire.

It's all gone a bit fork handles this haha

I know walkabout isn't close to the Hallamshire. I was wondering if the building I posted a picture of (which is neae the Hallamshire) is the building in the old photo. I think it is, same pillars. Anyway doesn't really matter, this is derailing the thread a bit haha

Fitzalan Square

What happened to that magnificent C&A building? And the left third of the corner building? Anyone know?

Think it was bombed during the Blitz December 1941. There's an irony there Hamburg.

I believe its now being developed into an Easy Hotel. The number of budget hotels down that end of town now it would be beneficial if they could develop Fitzalan Square with bars and restaurants.

It became a Primark, but they've moved down The Moor... not sure at the moment, but I reckon it's probably empty.

That's not what I meant. The building itself is different today.

I wondered whether it had, though often when people blame the Hun it turns out it was the council. However, even if that's true and that building was replaced, the corner building has shrunk since the war. See the following picture then have a look at Google maps.

And this is the sort of thing that pisses me off, and is typical of an underlying story running through this thread. They wanted to demolish this 1920s building, which wasn't listed and had become derelict:

But they have listed this building:

Fitzalan Square as I remember it before my teens. Post office (behind the camera to the right), blue & cream buses, Classic cinema.
I think the Marples building on the left took a direct hit from the Luftwaffe? Quite a few killed. The Classic of course burned down sometime in the 80s.

Currently being converted into an ‘Easy Hotel’ (EasyJet chain). The modern extension by Angel Street is to be demolished and replaced by a tower.
