Interesting stuff.....

SUFC said:
United's new promotion campaign for next season has been given a double boost with the Club taking up the contract extension options of Paddy Kenny and Nick Montgomery.

The Republic of Ireland International goalkeeper kept an impressive string of clean sheets last season whilst Montgomery improved his reputation amongst the Blades faithful with some stirring displays during the run-in.

In addition, new contract offers will be made to senior professionals Ian Bennett and Leigh Bromby who have been solid and dependable members of the squad which all but reached the Premiership.

Young prospects Sam Wedgbury and Matt Lowton will be offered new deals and are set to continue their development in Hungary with newly promoted Ferencvaros until January, alongside fellow United Academy products Jordan Robertson and Liban Abdi.

Meanwhile, Adam Chapman, who spent half of last season out on loan, was under contract but will join Oxford United for a £15,000 fee, dependent on games played, plus a 50% sell-on clause in any future transfer.

Danny Webber and Ugo Ehiogu will leave Bramall Lane as their contracts have expired and the Club would like to thank them for their efforts.

The achilles injury sustained by Ehiogu sidelined him from just before Christmas which was a huge loss, whilst Webber's contributions have also been hampered by injury during his time at the Lane.

Keith Quinn, Jamie Annerson, Maxime Chanot and Ben Starosta have also been released, whilst Craig Beattie, Greg Halford, Arturo Lupoli and John-Joe O'Toole, who all ended the season on loan with United, will return to their respective clubs after making good contributions.

Kevin Blackwell will need to reshape his squad for the new challenge and will test the market by making Lee Hendrie, David Carney, Nicky Law and Zeyn S-Latef available for transfer.

In terms of the Blades promotion push this will provide all four with the opportunity of first-team football elsewhere whilst reducing the wage bill and enabling more flexibility for new signings.

Quick decisions made on all those ones.

Disappointed about Halford going back but events at Sunderland might mean he is given the opportunity to sign later on in the summer.

They've obviously also been watching the young lads closely... no more Maxime Foxy :(

A lot of wages have been freed up there so hopefully some deals will be done.

This piece alone worries me.

Beattie can go home by all means, we do not need nor want him. Halford Needs to be signed, he has not only performed over the season as a whole, but has been one of the stars of the season. I simply can yget my head around this.

Lupoli i doubt we could sign full time anyway, i think he will end up at a prem club next season. And knowing the Blades luck, he will set the world alight and probably be subject to mulit million pound bids come January. If we should be doing anything, it should be trying to secure hi on a season long laon next season

Oh dear.

I think Lupoli and Halford are the 2 players we should be trying to sign.

Nevermind I am sure we will find someone from the lower leagues.

There was always going to be a big turnaround, I think it's going to be one of the biggest player turnarounds we've ever seen at the Lane this season.

It's certainly not going to be boring :D

Yeah we'd never want a player from someone like Colchester or Doncaster Rovers....

Oh, hang on!

True it will be rather good to see if we any of this seasons squad left come next season bar Kenny and Monty.

Halford is the only one of those that we'll really miss. Losing Ugo to injury was a big loss this season, but he's an aging player on v high wages so needed to be released. Losing his wages would prob at least cover what we'd have had to pay Halford if we could find the transfer fee. :(

Some positive signs there,

Bit disappointed with the wording on Halford and Lupoli as it looks like we won't be going for them.

The released people, no surprises really.

Good to see a decent sell on clause for Champman

I don't think we would manage to sign Halford, I know that Blues are after him and i'm sure a few other prem clubs would have been looking at him.

As for Lupoli I'm not sure I think given the chance he could have done a job for us. But maybe trying to buy someone who is a proven goal scorer might be a better idea.

Striker wise we are left with Henderson, Ward and Sharp leaving space for a new striker to come in and maybe another one on loan.

Yep we are now going back to the days of looking for a bargain. :)

I thought Lupoli deserved a chance too, when he came on he always looked dangerous and scored a big goal when we needed it. Would have liked him to stay.

It's going to be interesting who we'll bring in to score the goals with very little transfer money. I wish we still had Stead.

I wish we still had Hulse, was a massive mistake getting rid of him, I still think he was better than Henderson.

Gutted about Halford, disappointed about Lupoli, some of the other exits seem OK, why get rid of the promising kids, low wages?? there's still a few more who need showing the door

I don't know I think there is another striker that we let go that was an even bigger mistake.

I think its more to do with reducing the squad size, they might not be close to even making the first team bench.

Nothing about small Quinn on there. I'd heard that Keith was the best of the three, so it's a shame we're getting rid of him and not Stephen.

I think Lupoli and Halford had to return as there was nothing in the agreement that would allow us to buy them straight off. I think we will need to wait and hopefully United are already negotiating with sunderland and fiorentina about Permanent Deals.

I do reckon if we bid for lupoli then we shall be one of few clubs interested, main reason he's hardly had any proper appearances for us, so other clubs may be in the dark about his true ability, where as im sure we have been made aware of what he can do.
Adding to this hopefully blackwell takes some hints and learns the team how to play football and not hoofball and this should create a space for an attacking versatile play like Lupoli which will see him become an intergral part of the team next season.

Im also certain there isn't one blades fan who doesn't want halford to sign, hopefully the twat behind the scenes can listen to us for once and do there upmost to sign him, as im also fairly sure he's in love with the blades.

I agree Quinn should of gone.

Being ginger is a good enough reason to get rid surely. :D

The kids released may not have been costing much, but to keep them if it's been decided they won't be good enough is not only pointless for us, but unfair to them. Let them go and it gives them chance to either find another club and prove us wrong, or go for another career/education choice while they're still young.

Always a shame for them though - I remember that Ben Starosta's mum used to post on some of the message boards, so always kept an eye open for news of him after that.

Starosta always turn's into a star on Footy Man :(

Now i'm not one to moan but ...................... bookmark this and read when the new season starts.

1. We tried our best to keep him/them but .......................
2. We tried to sign one or two but ..................................

The Blades are on the slide. No AMBITION and before yer start its not ALL about money. The 'foundations' are important and 'cheap as chips' says to me the 'foundations' at BDTBL are non existent compare the fool to Owen Coyle just for example.................

Promise no more moaning from BB.

Willing to bet, right here right now. we do not spend more than £500k on a single player in the off season.

I hope I am wrong but I have that feeling its back to oldies and freebies a la Warnock. Then again we DID get promoted..........

Its disappointing about Halford but you never know few weeks down the line and he maybe back.

Lupoli- I think he has three years on his contract and on a high wage (cant confirm this though), so Fiorentina may want a large sum for him.

Bearing in mind that next season will be one of the most competitive in the championship, after reading this whole thread, i think i will be having trouble sleeping.
