Shude Hill

So is that Commercial Street overhead and behind that is the old Gas Board building that became an 'all you can eat' Chinese Buffet?

Photographer has the Penny Black behind him?

Ah, put some air conditioning for The Cleveland Bridge Company' in Darlingon around 1980. Tinsley viaduct was way ahead of its time when it was built, but has it ever been free of remedial work?

Tinsley Viaduct was a box girder bridge, which turned out to be a flawed design. The irony was that a conventional reinforced concrete bridge was the preferred design but Sheffield being the steel city and all that, the bridge had to be made of steel. Guess what, the steel industry in Sheffield was on strike during that period so the steel was brought in from Port Talbot. So we got a fucked up design which brought no benefit to the region.

Plus ca change.

Yes. That's Commercial Street with Canada House in the background. I think the Penny Black would be a fair way behind where this shot was taken from.

On the right of the aerial pic is the block which used to house Butlers Dining Rooms, home of the Desperate Dan pie and more recently Butlers Balti, on Brookhill. I'm amazed that row survived, particularly as part of it fell down a few years ago.

If the angle had been slightly wider, there would have been a view into the Hendo's factory on Leavygreave Rd.

Yeah, it's the former buffet place, not sure what it is now. All the all you can eat places seem to have gone, I miss Jumbos on the Arundel Gate, used to go there all the time when I was at Uni.

I think Sutcliffe was caught on Melbourne Avenue in Broomhill.

He was, on 2nd January 1981. Link

Not sure about that. The Jolly Buffer was on Ecclesall Road I think.

I may be wrong, but I doubt if it'll have been the JB. There were two pubs in the Havelock/Hanover Square area - The Hanover (still going) and one I used to use - The Rollng Mill (now closed).

The Jolly Buffer became The Classic Rock Bar around 1985 and I used to know the landlord - Sass - who eventually drank himself to death.

Life seemed much more colourful back then.

I used to go to Jumbo's regularly, I think the standards dropped (they were never really that high) but it was what it was.

I was born not far from Weston Park and we always used to go in there to see the polar bear, the wrestlers and the bees. We would also go into Crookes Valley Park ( which we called little Weston Park) for a walk round the lake, or, if we were lucky, twice round on the motor boat.

Does anyone remember the fat lady with the weighing chair in the old Sheffield Rag n Tag market? I've got a very distant memory of that as a child. Be really interested to see any old photo's of the Rag n Tag, and especially any of her?
