Jees, we miss Coutts...

Let's just hope Leonard can fill the massive void...

Definitely. We still dominate position, but no one pings it about like he does, switching play and picking a pass first time.

I think Leonard comes in for Lundstrum next game, Lunny has done ok but he slows.it down and picks the wrong option too often for me. He's got lots of talent for his age but we need a bit more dynamism in that middle.

Not sure Leonard is Lunnys replacement. Speaking to a Wigan fan and Evans sounds more like a Coutts player tbh, says he isn’t the fastest but is a cracking passer

Coutts is brilliant, but we weren't immune from getting shithoused when he was fit.

Norwich, QPR, Forest, Walsall, Fleetwood.

New signings in January rejuvenated us last season, let's hope they have a similar effect this time around.

How did we miss Coutts tonight? We had 64% possession. Keeping the ball wasn’t a problem.

Because Coutts spots that ball, plays that first time pass that gets us in behind or switches play and moves the ball on quicker so defences can't react.

Think Bury last season. Or Northampton. Or Hull this. His was the pass in behind or cross that picked open those defences.

Hopefully it is something Leonard, Evans or Holmes can bring.

Lets hope Evans and Leonard have better shooting boots that Lunny.

Evans needs to be put in anchor role of centre mid.

It’s not a popular opinion on here, but Lundstram frustrates the hell out of me. He is slow, ponderous and doesn’t make any incisive passes at all. Needs changing up because he just doesn’t do enough.

He was afforded a lot of space today, particularly when they went to 10. Just doesn’t use the ball well as a playmaker, can only hope Leonard is an improvement.

Oh, p.s his shooting is shite

The main player he had any chance of an incisive pass to they did a job on and doubled up on... It needed someone else to take advantage of that imbalance and make some space or give another option.

But if they’re doubling up on other players whilst down to 10, that means there’s acres of space elsewhere which he just didn’t (and doesn’t) exploit. The guy suffers from hammond-itis but gets away with it as the team is in a much better place than we were when Hammond was here. He isn’t as bad as Hammond, but I suspect Wilder shares this opinion by bringing in 2 CMs And has spoken about Ricky Holmes too. I think we might see him phased out of the team in the coming weeks.

Could be wrong but let’s see....

I thought Lundstram played well again. Possession wasn't the problem it was the final pass and decision making in the box.
Just do not know how you can say that. Won’t move forward rather play the ball back to the passer when in space to turn. Ok he can hit a long cross field ball but is slow and doesn’t open up a defence. If we had wanted Ray Wilkins I suspect he can still do the job.

Lundstram had one hell of a lotof goal to aim at, and a hell of a lot of time to pick hias spot. Shame his spot was row Z

I don't know if you noticed this but Coutts used to play an awful lot of sideways passes as well. He may have got on the front foot a bit more than Lundstram does at the moment but his game is still developing and steadily improving. Fleck is the one who normally drives forward into space and he didn't do that nearly enough tonight.
In any case we might see a change with 2 new midfielders coming in.

Lundstram did ok tonight and as Foxy said there was no space because they marked Duffy tightly knowing he is our key man. Would Coutts have made a difference playing the ball in behind? Maybe, but for me we missed Brooks more than anyone tonight because he would have took them on and created space, just like he did at Hillsborough. You have to remember Wednesday can defend very well, and did so tonight better than any League One team and better than Hull did as one guy mentioned. We could have easily won that tonight but also Wednesday could have took all three points too, it was that type of game.

I notice most things about what a footballer can do. He’s not what we need. The one thing Coutts could do which Lundstram can’t and is so valuable is to turn and take his marker completely out of the game. Stand in front of or behind Lundstram and he is out of the game as a creative force.

You've answered your own point there.

Lundstram is the kind of player you stick in there with Coutts & Fleck to keep it tight in Away games and pack the midfield.

Tonight he was deeper than Basham and O'Connell most of the time. Which again is fine if we're not at home against 10 men...

He kept things tight, which was good. However as the game opened up, he looked out of his depth.

Well you might get your wish soon and he could be dropped. Although I didn't sense Wilder was aiming any criticism his way in his post match comments.

I think you are being harsh on the lad.

To be honest mate I used to see Coutts regularly sat deeper than Bash and JOC as they joined the attack Fleck would do this as well to cover the left side but it was normally Coutts who sat deep. I'm sure I didn't imagine this.

Yes, I'd say so, based on what I saw tonight.

With Coutts you get incisive passing into the box, which is very hard to defend against.

United are now trying to be creative in the box in his absence, and that leads to over-elaboration, giving defenders a chance.

Your'e right. When he couldn't get forward or where there was a gap between defence and midfield he would drop back and play the quarterback to link defence to midfield. But he went forward and gave a pass and moved and picked up a pass all forward. He didn't work along the line from side to side.
