I wonder what RS Johnny is thinking now?

As for questioning his expertise, the fact he gets to dedicate his professional time to researching football, specifically South Yorkshire sides, should give him incredible inside knowledge. What ever job each the members of this forum do, I'd like to bet most of us consider ourselves experts in our own fields. I'm not claiming he has some intrinsic understanding we do not, just that he is fortunate enough to dedicate a greater proportion of his time to it.

Well with all the extra time proportioned to the subject matter then, you would think he might be able to spot that in this instance his prediction of relegation struggle was maybe a little off the target. He is entitled to his view as we all are. But for a subject matter expert who covers local football for local media his prediction of doom and gloom for Utd and promotion parties a plenty for wendy does seem to be a little awry. Some of us didn't need to work from radio sheffield to see what we could I'm front of our own eyes after watching football for a long long time.

I actually like RS/FH/PorG. And I don’t mind any of the presenters.

Does this set me aside somewhat?

No it doesnt my friend. I'm the same, already stated so above. Think they do a good job. Doesn't mean to say that some of them can't talk clap trap from time to time. We aren't running a 'do you like a RS presenter' on this thread. Well at least I didn't think we were?

I don't either, nor any of the others, but somehow, it's become accepted on this thread that he was forecasting relegation.

I imagine all broadcasts are available to listen to, would anybody on here care to find a quote from Buchan (or any of the others for that matter), supporting the notion that they thought we were in a relegation scrap?

Perhaps you didn't listen to Jonny on RS in pre season then or early part of the season? I know what I heard and how I interpreted it. Clearly CW thought likewise with his little 'dig' back in one of the interviews he did. If you can be arsed to do so (which I'm not cos I'm a busy fellow) you might be able to find a thread on here where negative Jonnys comments were raised previously and when CW had a sly dig back. If you didnt interpret his comments as being negative then fine, some of us clearly did.

To be fair, I’ve read your posts for years and listened to Jonny for a fair few seasons now. I think he knows more than you Pinch.

Give me an hour on his show with him. He’ll throw the towel in after half an hour. No contest.

As for questioning his expertise, the fact he gets to dedicate his professional time to researching football, specifically South Yorkshire sides, should give him incredible inside knowledge.

And what would this incredible insider knowledge be then?

If you mean that they might get insider knowledge on potential transfer targets, potential outgoings, boardroom wrangles, player injuries and niggles, a player shaggin the club secretary etc etc then I would agree with you.

If you mean that them having insider knowledge gives them a further intrinsic fountain of footballing knowledge that us outside of local sports media somehow just don't get after weve been watching and playing football for decades, then I can't disagree more.

I think it's a safe assumption to suggest that in my more advancing years I might have just watched and played a little bit more football than them and have an understanding of how football works by now.

It just so happens that I have friends in the football industry (some being current management and with clubs not a million miles away from Sheffield) and I've had a fair few pals who played at professional level (all now retired). I've always been able to talk football with them on a level playing field and more often than not they understood and agreed with my point (and vica versa). I didn't have to have inside knowledge or actually be involved with that industry to make what I saw in front of my own eyes any more valid.

Radio Sheffield's, Jonathan Buchan, the guy with the flat vowels and seemingly even flatter intellect. I wonder what he is thinking this morning as he looks at the Championship league table and sees Sheffield United sitting on top of the pile?

Remember, this is the guy who has mentioned "relegation", "relegation battle" and "survival" all summer, every time Sheffield United's name came up.

I wonder if he's now in the camp of admitting he got it grossly wrong - or maybe he's in the "bubble will burst soon" camp? Does he still think we are going to get relegated I wonder? Of course, it's still possible that we could - but we won't - and it was NEVER going to be the case.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, and opinions differ of course. But what I can't understand is how anyone with any knowledge of the game, could have looked at the Sheffield United team that blasted its way out of League 1 last season, playing a standard of football, way above that of League 1, and tip them to struggle this season? Honestly, I find that incredible. Especially for someone who observes and reports on football for a living. It shows an alarming lack of insight to me.

I'm not saying any of us thought it would be as good a start to a season as this, but I think most "sensible" Blades would have expected us to at the very least hold our own.

It makes it all the sweeter to prove our doubters wrong eh?
Staton was exactly the same

He’s a fucking numpty. A spotty faced adolescent who hasn’t a clue. I bet he plays Junior Computer Manager.

What's Junior Computer Manager, and why would you want to manage one?

I've been watching since around 1970. I've seen some good United teams in that time. I've seen several "promotion" teams and honestly, I do think you can tell when a team has really got something about them and is going places. It's a combination of lots of things that come together, the right manager, the right players, with the right attitude, the right team selection and tactics, the right level of backing from the Board, the feelgood factor amongst the fans, the quality of the football being played out there on the pitch. It's all those things. Every single time I've seen a United team do well, it's been all of those things, without exception

.

And sometimes it's just your time and this is ours.

I wasn't claiming that journalists are footballing oracles, with knowledge beyond our comprehension. Just that they will have a better knowledge of the budgetary constraints and championship squads as a whole, than the average fan. Last season for example, we all watched countless league one games and our talent was plain to see. But I'd guess most of us didn't see that much championship football, personally I was restricted to the odd game on sky and two trips to the rust bucket. The Radio Sheffield journalists on the other hand, will have seen a lot of us, Barnsley, the pigs and their opponents, and therefore had better frames of reference. The one factor that they (and me) underestimates, was the quality of our coaching and management team.

Jesus, it's a prediction. Who cares?

There’s was also a wide variety of predictions on where we would finish. I can’t find the pre-season prediction, but after what most felt was a reasonably solid transfer window less than a third thought we’d finish 9th or higher: https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/poll-post-transfer-window-expectations.57613/

We’re far exceeding expectations – our own, and those held by non-fans. To suggest otherwise is revisionist nonsense.

Speaking personally, I thought we'd stay up comfortably but not really trouble the top 6 unless we spent a lot more money than we actually did. This feels like playing with house money.

Another point, of course, is that there are still 32 games to go. Where we will actually finish remains to be seen.

You're asking me to go back through posts to prove your point for you? I may not be as busy as you, but I'm too busy for that :-) I'm not an avid listener, so I could have missed the relevant calls, but I thought all of them suggested we'd at least survive.

Give me an hour on his show with him. He’ll throw the towel in after half an hour. No contest.

We all feel like that Pinchy, just reading your posts is more than enough for me :-)

Who had it easy then?
The attractive daughters of sports stars who seemed to find it relatively easy to get jobs on Sky Sports would be my guess. I suspect your career may have been more glittering if you'd got decent norks and your dad played for Liverpool or captained a Ryder Cup team.

Fair point but even then, it’s not quite as simple as jumping in front of the screen :)

If your dad was a miserable dour Jock who played for Liverpool, you might also be invited to 'present' a show on radio 5Live. You could then wow them with your lack of personality, no grasp of the sport at hand and general uselessness.

As it's radio they don't even get to see the norks, decent or otherwise.

Well Andy Giddings simply won't accept we won on Friday. Just go to the 59 minute mark here

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05j2xv7

I listened to this live when they repeated it at the end of the show. I reckon the producer deliberately put it on again at the end to take the pee out of Gidds as he could easily have cut the clip before the score.

I remember Keith Macklin screaming Sheffield Wednesday 1 Manchester United 0 - when it was us and we were playing Citeh - and the goal had already been disallowed! Mind you Keith was certainly a one off - our very own version of Murray Walker.

Magic

No not at all. Im certainly not asking to to go through previous posts. If you've got a life then you probably wouldnt dream of it cos im sure youve probably got a lot more things to be doing in your busy life. I know I can't be bothered to do so. What i did actually suggest was that if you was so inclined (which clearly you are not) you could always go back through previous posts when this very subject matter was discussed and people comented on CW giving a bit of a nudge to negative Jonny. Up to you what you believe personally about whether CW made a point to him in an interview CW gave. I know what i heatd and how i interpreted it. At the end of the day it's not really important.

Maybe it's a learning curve for Jonny and he might now know that the championship isn't actually la liga after all despite what the pigs fans claimed pre season.

Awwww go on Bushy...

Go on....

Go on and tell us which luvvies you know.

Pleeeeeaaasse.....
Name dropping is for twats. Luvvies don't live in Bush (well they do until they become successful and move to Hampstead). I do know a couple of producers though and one of my mates was a journalist before he found he could make more money doing PR.

Better than "there's some people on the pitch..."Ken; "One nil!" Dave; "Woah, SCREAMER" Baz - absolutely

Derek Dougan ( I think) header from around penalty spot - "This boys got a BOOT between his ears " - now that's commentating

Your soul usually commands a decent price when you sell it and move to PR
