I get that....but did he get the loan because he was at a premier league side or because he was significantly better than the third choice keeper at a league one side?
I don't know....but after Moore arrived we had Moore...(undoubted first choice), Long, Ramsdale, Eastwood.
Could Ramsdale have done as good a job? Possibly.

My point is....that now we are a league higher teams below will be more inclined to want our players on loan. I see similar with this Ripley. Keepers can only be assessed on performances, and unless they get the chance to play nobody can decide if they are good enough.
By all accounts, Eastwood stepped up and took his chance to show he's pretty good. Are there lots of keepers out there with real ability just waiting for a manager to trust them? Like we did with Long? Ok it was needs must and he didn't really make the grade, but who's to say young Eastwood won't rise to the challenge and thrive.

I see your point, and Eastwood looks promising but we need more cover anyway, at least for now if Moore is going to be out for a while. Ripley sounds a reasonable call for a loan spell to me, depends what else is available that our management team can bring in.

Our management will certainly be aware of Ripley after last season in L1. But he wouldn't have signed as back up. Now the chance to offer first team football will have opened up the possibility of a move for all parties.

Hope we get him. Next Paddy Kenny possibly.

Ripley was quality and better than Moore, was by far the best keeper in league 1 last season, if people were happy with Moore as number 1 this season they should be more than happy with Ripley

If he wouldn't come in as back up he can do one, If he's not confident he's good enough to earn the top spot then "see yer".
Unless he's head and shoulders better than Eastwood it's a no for me. And I'm not convinced he will be.
And not bothered about having the next Paddy Kenny either if I'm honest. Games evolving....if we we are wanting to sign another keeper let's have one who has developed the sweeper keeper role and can ping passes 40 yards to the full back out wide. That's the way the game is going for keepers, all academy sides are looking at that as the way forwards.

If that's the case, surely he would be closer to the Boro team?
If you are good enough you are old enough.

they just signed Randolph for £5m!

A less than outstanding keeper IMHO. Is he so much better than Ripley and will he make such a huge improvement over him?
If so, then again it's a no from me.

Just like outfield players there are good keepers waiting for a chance to shine higher up the pyramid. Perhaps we should go to Boro and look at their back up keeper who has just been relegated it would appear by the arrival of Randolph.

They've signed Randolph for £5 million he's better than Eastwood at this time and I would say better than Moore, most clean sheets last season in a far worse side than ours and one that was close to relegation.

I don't think you can look at it that way with keepers. They don't get the same amount of opportunities as outfield players. Even if the back up GK is better it's possible that he'll not get a look in as long as the first choice GK doesn't give the manager reason to drop him, especially when the first choice is well established at the club.

When it comes to loan moves they need more of a guarantee than outfield players do.

Regardless of whether we sign Ripley or not. He was the best gk in league 1 last season. Hence the reason he was in the team of the year. Plus he set a club record for clean sheets in a team that barely avoided relegation.

This is another example of where I wished Utd had a better scouting knowledge of foreign leagues.

There must be some top stoppers in the Scandinavian, German, French or Italian leagues.

It's not just stoppers. It has frustrated me for years and years. We're trying to sign players from English clubs and haggling over prices when there must be better options in a cheaper market like Scandinavia.

He didn't singlehandedly get the clean sheets.
Oldham set up very defensively and reduced the level to which he was exposed.

Exactly. Opportunities are limited for keepers, especially younger keepers. But if they are good enough they will play if given the chance.
Brooks....until the summer was getting sent to L2. He gets a chance to show what he can do and suddenly he's gaining reputation and to some is a first team starter. It shouldn't be different for keepers, and there should be the same chances available to them. Eastwood did well apparently....did he do anything to suggest he isn't ready? Anything to justify dropping him? Anything to say he should be replaced by the third choice keeper at another championship side?

Up to now, no. so unless we are bringing in a top keeper with experience (which is the only thing Eastwood might be missing) I wouldn't be jumping in for Ripley either, and certainly not for first choice being he's a young keeper having had one decent season in the sticks for a very defensively set up Oldham in league one.

If Moores injury is long term, and Eastwood is deemed third choice at best then fine, go for Ripley as well as the experienced keeper I prefer and let them set their stalls out for the shirt. We can't go a season with two just keepers, three is the minimum.

Loan or not, no persons place in the side should be assured.

Due to one 70 minute appearance in pre season against Rotherham as opposed to a full season in the SPL followed by a full season being a standout performer in a struggling Oldham side?

I like the look of Eastwood but he was our fourth choice last year. Baby steps, Ripley is miles ahead of him.

I would have gone for Connor Ripley, Neil Etheridge or Lawrence Vigouroux. All excellent performers last season, and young enough to improve. Have it on very good authority that we looked at the latter two in January, when Rambo moved on. Etheridge has gone to Cardiff from Walsall, and Ripley has a year left on his contract. I hope that any deal contains an option for a permanent contract..

Jon McLaughlin from Burton still hasn't got a club. Did well for them last year, they still haven't replaced him.

Wouldn't mind that at all for free.

Eastwood to start tonight with the young development 'keeper, Jim Pollard, on the bench. Hope we move quickly to bring someone in, despite Eastwood's impressive performance on Friday.

Mate of mine spoke to Moore at the game tonight who said he would be out 3-4 weeks... so fingers crossed, thought Eastwood did ok, but we still need backup
