Didn't Ramsdale's contract finish in June (which meant he could walk and we'd get even more of a pittance from a tribunal)?

If it did, it simply means we fucked up once again for allowing that situation to arise with such a great young prospect.

Wonder if Moore end up being out for a while if we will bring in 2 Keepers

Saw Julian Speroni come on in the second half for Palace today in the Hong Kong tournament and he still look good.

I wonder if he'd be worth a shout on loan if Moore is longer term?

But thats the thing. Tracey was never a 'back up' keeper. For spells he was a first team keeper who just so happened to be being kept out of the team at that time by another player (Kelly) in his position.

Tracey was the undisputed number one for Utd after replacing Graham Benstead in the 88-89 season. He remained number 1 until Kelly arrived on the scene in 92 from Preston.

The reason some tend to think of Tracey as being the 'back up' keeper, was that he had more injuries than Kelly. When he got back to full fitness, he couldn't get back into the side cos Kelly was such a good keeper and in form. Likewise, on the less frequent occasions when Kelly was injured, Tracey held the spot as number 1 keeper, keeping Kelly out of the team when he was fit again, until Tracey's injuries (usually his shoulder) resurfaced again. Only towards the end of Traceys career at the Lane was it apparent that injuries had taken its toll on him and then and only then was Kelly the undisputed top dog.

Both were number 1 keepers in their own right, both were fantastically gifted players, and neither could be classed as a 'back up' to the other. Between them they ensured that Utd kept a fabulous keeper in between the sticks for nearly a decade. The thing is it worked so well. Both waited for their chance and had to sit on the bench for a time, and when they got their chance invariably it was only their injuries which gave the other his chance. It meant that both stayed on top of their respective games.

Utd dont need a keeper who makes a living out of 'covering' for another keeper. They need a new keeper who is confident enough in his own abilities to think that he he should be the undisputed number 1. Then it's down to new boy and Moore to battle it out ala Kelly and Tracey did back in the day for that first team spot. Competition for places doesn't do any one any harm, it keeps em both sharp and on their toes.

I viewed it differently at the time. For me, I thought it became pretty clear by end of 92/93 that Kelly had established himself as number 1, only ever out of the side when injury/suspension occurred (or the brief contract dispute?), and that there was never really a time that Tracey got the better of the battle – which for me reflected their abilities, as while Tracey was really good Kelly was excellent. That's why Tracey ended up loaned out a few times – Kelly never was. It's fortunate for Tracey that Kelly was sold, as I doubt he'd have ever ousted him as number 1 had he stayed. Tracey was unfortunate with injury, but unfortunate too that he had Kelly on the books. The pre- and post-Kelly era the role was his though.

You remember correctly Tracey was very good I remember him on standby for the England squad. But Kelly was truly excellent his save away at Barnsley was banks'esque' and there were several others for ROI that were magnificent against Holland in a playoff springs to mind. Ned still at Preston I believe was the finest keeper I saw at the lane closely followed by Mel Rees, Tracey, and Kenny ......I do love a stroll down memory lane

prem wages

McGregor the hull keeper as always impressed me. Don't no what situation is pretty sure he was on loan last season at Cardiff

He has his own restaurant. Cant see him leaving London

Agree on Tracey - especially on the point about the defence. What deal with Nilsen and Kelly? There was always a lot of finger pointing. It looked as though if they could have gone 12 rounds, they would.
Almost came to blows in the 1-1 draw at Norwich in October 1996

He certainly played over a longer period, but at a guess Kelly during the period they overlapped would have played about 75% of the games. Tracey = our Steve Harper.
Less than 75%. The only time I thought Kelly was better than Tracey was during the 94/95 season when Tracey "had lost it"

As far as the 'who was better' argument between Kelly and Tracey.....I really can't decide who was. I've gone through this many a time in my head but I just can't decide. I think one of them....thinking aboit the saves they pulled off in certain matches....and think it's got to be him....then I think of the other keeper and think of the unbelievable saves that they did...it's impossible to choose.

It must be like taking Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie to bed and having a really dirty threesome with them both doing things which would make your pips pop in a minute....and then trying to decide who was the best one in the sack. Just can't be done I tell ya.

I have a friend who spent a brief spell at Blackburn, he mentioned a few players (including Steele) who were on ridiculous money.

Far more money than I would imagine we are paying Sharp, let alone a backup keeper.
Fair do's.
No wonder they are in a pickle then.

He said the atmosphere was rotten because you had a small group of players being paid obscene amounts of money, left over from when they had parachute payments and were more ambitious, combined with other players and promoted academy players being paid peanuts.

Recipe for disaster.

Been doing the stats (up to 1999- will explain why in a seperate thread). Between 1992-93 (Kelly's first season) and 1998-99 (Kelly's last season) Kelly made 215 League apps and Tracey 93 so that is 69.8%
