Brooks

I don't want to even ask, the idea of this thread was to mention how important he's going to be as a player, but I suppose this is inevitable!
So, how much would you ask for if Everton do come sniffing?
£6m. According to the Mirror headline there's a queue so it's an auction. So my view is 'we'll consider offers above £6m'. See if anyone bites.

Anything over £5m would give us a top-half budget to spend on proven Championship players but we'd need to get the sale done before August.

That said it would be nice to see one of our youngsters actually play for Sheffield United.

It us the time of year when journalists fabricate stories based upon only the merest hint of truth. It us their job to sell papers and create publicity do not believe any/everything that us published unless it us a credible source which is replicated with other credible sources.

It's the age old question, would the extra revenue been directly spent on new players and strengthening?
Personally of all the youngsters we've lost, Brooks going would top them all regardless of price.

I've got this wild theory that his value will only increase when he makes first team appearances. So it might be an idea not to entertain any offers at this stage? Then as a bonus we might be treated to more than 5 minutes of him in our shirt.

But surely it is our duty to him to practically give him away so that he gets the chance to play for a club in a higher division

A bit like Southend and Charlton have done

That sort of thinking is not permitted on here. Sell him for one million pounds now!

I'm usually pretty easy going about us selling our young talent. I accept that it's going to happen and I think it's far from certain they will make the grade - so if we can cash in and use that money to buy players who are better suited to what we need now then fair enough.

But the situation with Brooks is a bit different. And the situation with Sheff United is a bit different. Brooks is an outstanding talent - far more promising than Mellis, Naughton, Ramsdale, Maguire, DCL, at this stage of his career. (I exclude Walker).

If we hold onto this lad - even till January - and get him established in the first team his value will more than double in the next 6 months. Championship strikers go for silly money. Sell him now for £2m or hang on a bit and get £10m? I know which I'd prefer.

Kevin McCabe does. When I challenged him on the ongoing financial viability of the academy, post EPPP, he claimed it was "well in profit" up to that point (April 16). McCabe and Binnion also claimed that we would be evolving our methods - targeting more senior drop out from other academies to counterbalance damaging EPPP measures. Since these comment, we've sold DCL (traditional pathway), Ramsdale (Bolton Wanderers), Adams (Ilkeston Town). We also have Whiteman and Brooks doing well (Manchester clubs) and some good Sheffield lads looking good. I'd suggest the academy is still well in profit, since McCabe's comments. An intrepid local journalist would ask whether he is thinking about applying for cat 1 status. I asked that question, and he said "we would revisit when in the championship" (I'm paraphrasing).
One of the problems with any cost benefit analysis of the academy, is that much of the funding comes from grants. Also the fact that Shirecliffe doesn't just house the youth teams, but the first team too. The first team is indirectly benefiting from grants as well as the youth teams, as they share facilities. Sponsors can also get more exposure as they can be associated with Shirecliffe/youth team as well as Bramall Lane/first team. We also have a facility that we can rent out or use for community related projects, raising good PR for the club.

There you go then. Long live the academy!

Disagree about Naugthon and Maguire. They were both established first team players by Brooks’ age. That’s not an attempt to do Brooks down in any way but Naughton had just completed a season as a key player in a side that just missed out on promotion from the championship.

I think wilder rates brooks quite a bit and sees him as part of the first team of today's training session at Marbella was anything to this by. They were playing mini 6 a side matches and swapping the teams after every 3 goals, wilder made sure brooks played in every game, was also constantly shouting instructions at him. He has some real skill on the ball too, looked good

Highlights reel of Brooks's performance at the Tiddlywinks Tournament or whatever it's called.

Of course it's only a YouTube clip, but blimey he looks good.

If that was a players full season highlights I'd be excited to sign them let alone it being from just one tourenent.
He's going to be one hell of a wildcard next season!

Southend can keep lenny the lion, everton and bournemouth can f*k off we'll keep Brooks. The control when he brings the ball down is amazing.

Sounds absolute quality. I'm sure McCabe will show some ambition and keep him....

What wage would you pay him?
Should he be made the highest paid player at the club, even though he's rarely played any matches at league football level.

The last time I heard our fans raving about us having a great player was the Italian lad Diego Di Geralamo that Juventus were looking at.
We offered him a big pay rise but he refused because he wanted even more money as he was so convinced that he was a rising star with a massive future.
