Brooks

I've been to Brentford's Academy. We drew 2-2 & Brooks scored as it happens.

Nothing special. Standard "used to be a Sports Club" affair. Like Shirecliffe. At that time, in 2014/15, Brentford were doing very well at U18 level. They were 11 points clear at the top of the South. Indeed, that draw denied them the title that day.

Don't academies receive som funding from the FA or premier league?

But level three academy has 5 full time staff.
Physio will be 25k minimum
Manager 40k
Head of junior 25k
Head of 13-16 25k
Head of academy coaching 25k

Add costs of facility, transport, food.
Then wages to scholars 18 x 6k is £108k
Plus board for 9 at £200 pw so 7200 x 10 months is 72k. Total youth team cost £180k minimum.

£320k minimum in full time costs for wages, then there are the droves of part time coaches and Physio, so that figure will rise by I would say £300 per days training for all age groups. And they train 2 times a week at all ages and three from 14's onwards. Plus match days.
So a conservative £1k a week during season....so around another £40k

So far that's a total of £360k in wages for coaching alone. At a level three that rents a facility.

A level two has to have more full time staff, doctors,Physio's, Coaches, Groundsmen, admin staff. And at United the facility itself.
So I reckon you can at least double salaries, and they train more often too.

So by my reasoning out academy will be costing £1m - £1.5 a year to run.

You wouldn't have Stevens in that side? I think he's going to be a revalation.

Baldock new RCM Fleck Stevens
Brooks

No THAT'S more like what I was Thinking, it puts a lot of pressure on Fleck though.
Also, I'm not sure Baldock would dislodge Freeman just yet.

I can't believe Coutts has been left out of your sides, did you not see him play last year, he has so much time on the ball, potentially a top championship player. He was a revelation last year and I predict will be this year too. UTB

Quite right.
Although this would only matter of course if we let his contract run down. Under contract, usual rules apply.
But Man City would get nothing...they released him and deemed him not good enough to make it.

Yeah that was basically my understanding of the situation. Does anyone actually know how long he’s contracted for?

Nope, from memory, from a set of accounts posted a few years back. It was also the case during the Warnock years that he did a deal with McCabe that if he was compelled to sell players then 20% of transfer sales went back into the running of the academy. I don't know whether or not this still stands but the academy was largely Warnock's legacy and he deserves credit for it.

If you look at what's going on there, what with the coaching staff, council rates, ground staff, utilities, catering facilities, educational facilities, transportation etc. Oh and don't forget the junior pros get paid, expenses for the rest and the Crookes facility as well then you've got a tidy sum of money. One million or two ain't going to cover it, so £3-4m seems like a fair assessment to me.

P.S. Haven't we had this discussion before?

But we don’t know if it covers the training facilities for the first team?

If it does, what would be the cost of providing coaching and training facilities of a similar standard for the senior squad only? That’s somewhat rhetorical as I’d wager none of us know but that would give us a better idea of the net cost of having an academy when weighing up the pros and cons against the transfer fees and first team benefits it brings.

I think you're underestimating the cost of running a Category 2 academy. I can't find anything on United's but I've dug this out regarding Brentford's. They shut theirs down last year because they couldn't justify the £1.5m running costs. Considering their ground is a shit-tip plus I can't recall anyone of note coming through it, I find it difficult to imagine it was anything on the scale of ours.

But in London, the property and salary costs would automatically be significantly higher which might offset that.

Wouldn’t Coutts be a good fit for that RCM role? Or Basham if we wanted someone more defensive?

Also, JOC would be the CB in that formation for me with Lafferty or Stevens at LB.

agree with that, also think Carruthers would be fine at LCM and unless we bring in better players that's likely to be our starting line up

He's a class act. I think I'm in the minority to be honest that's always liked him.
I just don't think he does enough to complement Fleck- the man we need to be building this team around.
Likewise, to bring it back to Brook, Coutts won't do enough to help Brooks game flourish.

think 3-4m a year is spot on.

Travis Binnon 1m a year
Utilities 50k a year
Youth players 3m a year.

Yes, 4m sounds about right.
£3m a season on youth players. Are you serious?

20 first and second year scholars on £100 a week £5200 a season which is £130k a year.

I think you are way off the mark.

Binnion will be on £3k a week tops or £150k a year.

Without doubt the cost of paying good coaches, physios, general up keep, travel, Utilities will all add up but really? £4m

Kevin McCabe does. When I challenged him on the ongoing financial viability of the academy, post EPPP, he claimed it was "well in profit" up to that point (April 16). McCabe and Binnion also claimed that we would be evolving our methods - targeting more senior drop out from other academies to counterbalance damaging EPPP measures. Since these comment, we've sold DCL (traditional pathway), Ramsdale (Bolton Wanderers), Adams (Ilkeston Town). We also have Whiteman and Brooks doing well (Manchester clubs) and some good Sheffield lads looking good. I'd suggest the academy is still well in profit, since McCabe's comments. An intrepid local journalist would ask whether he is thinking about applying for cat 1 status. I asked that question, and he said "we would revisit when in the championship" (I'm paraphrasing).
One of the problems with any cost benefit analysis of the academy, is that much of the funding comes from grants. Also the fact that Shirecliffe doesn't just house the youth teams, but the first team too. The first team is indirectly benefiting from grants as well as the youth teams, as they share facilities. Sponsors can also get more exposure as they can be associated with Shirecliffe/youth team as well as Bramall Lane/first team. We also have a facility that we can rent out or use for community related projects, raising good PR for the club.

Are you being serious with that £10m? Just wondering what it is that makes you think that? It's a serious question as I've seen absolutely nothing of him
15mil if Man City come calling :)

I rate brooks but I feel many blades are getting ahead of themselves in terms of his development Adams and DCL had a season of football before they became saleable assets brooks has yet to be tested in the league we will see how he fairs after he has been kicked around the park by a Hutchison type, and then if he copes we have a very special talent but at the moment we have a kid with the potential to be a very special talent, no pressure on the kid please

Travis Binnion on £1mil a year????? £20k a week?!!!!!

That’s more outlandish than Blade too long’s claim that Stearman cost £2.5million.
:D

It just gets better! I thought someone had lost their marbles completely the other day when they were saying that some Preston player was on £30k a week! But this is just fantastic!

Jayzus! If that's true I'm going to apply for a job down there. Groundsman, or Catering Manager maybe - what do you reckon Scoots? They must be paying at least half a million a year for either of them?

I don't want to even ask, the idea of this thread was to mention how important he's going to be as a player, but I suppose this is inevitable!
So, how much would you ask for if Everton do come sniffing?
