I'm talking about things you really shouldn't have had on your person, but did, for some reason, on entering the ground?
For me, it was a day back in 1972. (I know some of you weren't born then - but that doesn't matter - you can imagine it - Sheffield's not changed that much - but everything was cheaper then and it was all in black and white).
I'd just returned from *eeds, after spending a week at my big Bro's house, during the August school holidays. I arrived into Pond Street on the X32, with my rucksack on my back, filled with my sleeping bag, pyjamas and a T-square in my hand. (A T-square was "essential kit" that all kids had back in the 70's for doing "Technical Drawing" at school. I never owned one and I was due to study Tech Drawing from September, so my big Bro kindly gave me his old one).
As I got off the bus and made my way to platform A, (hoping to see Pond Street Nora - who I had a special relationship with) I saw loads of United fans heading to the match. I didn't even realise there was a match on! I had a dilemma now. I'd not got time to go home and drop my stuff off, so I decided to go straight to the game.
I marched up the steps to the kop with rucksack on back and T-Square in hand and was stopped by two coppers.
""What have you got in the bag?" said the first copper, pointing to my rucksack. I explained I'd got my sleeping bag and pyjamas. They looked totally confused. Then the next copper said,
"What do you think you're going to do with that?" pointing to the T-square.
"Technical Drawing" I said, innocently.
They thought I was taking the piss at first but then they realised I was from Derbyshire,(strong in the arm and weak in the head) and told me I couldn't take those things in the ground.
They took them off me and told me they'd leave them at the club shop, which was a little place on the corner of Cherry Street back then.
I watched the match (can't remember who it was now) but all the time I was worried that I'd not get my rucksack and T-square back afterwards.
In the end it all turned out alright. I got my rucksack and T-square back - and most importantly, the Blades won!
(And I got a "C" for Tech drawing a year later).
