Before it was The Hornblower it was The Raven - notable for me as it was where I had my first drink on licensed premises on April 5th 1980, the day before my 15th birthday.
I had 3 pints of warm Whitbreads that I pretended to like and was absolutely bongoed.
Now theres a thread worth starting.... the location of your first underage drink. Mine was a pub at Norton Lees that unsurprisingly I cant remember the name of but it wasn't the Nailmakers or the New Inn. Same year as yours but I was 13 got away with loads being a big lad with a moustache... or maybe the landlords where a bit more relaxed then

I remember it having a decent pinball machine and being a bit of a grotty pub, also having a good jukebox,

Mount Pleasant? Sportsman? Prince of Wales? Cross Scythes?

Or further up and not really Norton Lees... the Baggy? (Bagshaw Arms)

Turf Tavern, before a 4th year school disco,I looked about 12,no way could I go anywhere near the bar,so gave money to my mate who was tall and had diggers,we hid round corner out of sight as he ordered the 5 or 6 beers,Tetleys it was, bloody awful taste,to somebody like me who would have rather had a dandelion and burdock, downtown it was the Marples, same scenario,we hid as far from the bar as possible as Big Lad went to bar

What kind of diggers? JCB?

1998. Simon Tracey got a pair of black eyes after the WBA home game. Someone told me he was helping Billy who trying to control a violent customer and then got hit. He had to play in a match at Tranmere two days later because Kelly was too injured to play
It was Billy who whacked him during a game of cards after hours.

You went in Marples for the ageing ladies, not for the Beer, admit it.,

There is a lot of different names for them, didn't affect me I could never grow them,Chads,Noddy Holders
Genuinely hadn't heard that before. My mum used to call them sideboards so that's what I grew up calling them. Not sure if it's correct or not. At 16, I looked about 16 then had a skinhead and immediately looked about 20. Which opened up a whole new world for me.

Do you still keep in touch with this skinhead fellow?

Yes that's another name for them I can remember

I have been living in North Lincs for the last 10 years so my Sheffield Calves have largely withered away. anything more than a step is now something akin to Everest. Hornblower was just off West Street near that Indian restaurant what was it called? Nirmals oh bloody hell this is getting ridiculous

The question is... is it age that is making me forget the name of every establishment in Sheffield or the amount of ale I supped in them??
It was the Raven before that.

Could the Indian have been the Himalaya rather than Nirmals,it was just along from it?

I have loved reading this thread. For the last 10 years I have lived out of town so have to drive to the match. As such its just a swift one in the cricks before the game. Its true also that the advent of real ale has improved some of the pubs a lot. I remember the old crown for a great atmosphere on match days but one of the worst pints of tetleys going. Although I was a frequenter of the White Lion which in my view had the best pint of Tetleys in Sheffield. Was also gutted last week to notice that the Matilda was closed always had a couple in there on the way back to the bus station.
The Matilda is opening again. :)

If it is the Manor Hotel on Fretson road it was shut down years ago due to trouble and made into a members only club. Saturday nights used to be good in there when the disco was on, 10pm would see a bus full of coppers parked up outside waiting for it to kick off, they weren't usually disappointed. Funniest I saw in there was the night Troggy came in with a nanny goat on a rope.
One of the last times I was in there I gave Troggy a pair of my boots as his were falling to bits!

:)

It was all much of a muchness when we went... not much taste difference between the different shades of ale. The amber tasted exactly the same as the chocolate orange stout... which tasted of neither chocolate nor orange. And the prices were too steep for drinking someone's experiments. I've heard people since praising the beer so that may have improved.

If you're up that way, also try the Red Deer. The Dog and Partridge also has a couple of casks on.

Really fancied that chocolate orange stout. Tasted like water. The honey pale ale was ok though.

I think mine was the Little Sheaf closely followed by the Shakey and then my real home the Roundhouse....yep Heeley lad! :)

Agree with that almost 100%, apart from the Sentinel, which is just an absolute rip off and way too expensive - yes, the ale is good but not THAT good to justify their prices.

We used to drink in the Dev Cat until they refurbed it. The beer is still good but the service is slow. Nowadays it's either the Sheffield Tap or the little gem off West Street/Glossop Road, The Bath Hotel - awesome ale in there! It's a bit of a hike but worth it.
The Bath used to be great until the owner leased it to thornbridge..

Although they do some fantastic beers, they are a rip off...
They tend to sell just their own beers on the pumps at very high rates.. they've brewed the beer and are selling it in their own pubs so overheads are low.. (buying beers through the pub owners etc)

Their sequoia beer though... oh my.. what a drink!!

Domino was two roomed Wards pub as described, looked like a space ship had landed.

Cross Guns was ok, played for them a few times in my youth had an Army PTI for fitness coach, landlord for nutrition and many of the early BBC as tackling instructors.

Polish bar is worth a drink and landlord goes to the matches. Cheap strong beer, Sky and friendly.

Wasn't it Man City in The Tramway when a Police horse entered bar..

Hermitage famous for Sunday dippers at 1230 and 1330.

Norfolk Arms opposite Wards Brewery occasionally afterwards.

Think London Blades used The Pump and Moorfoot Tav for a while

Nirmals was near where The Jannath was up from The Hornblower.

Amazed that Matilda is opening as its a wreck structurally, small and the land behind would make flats to the unscrupulous. Great Wards frieze outside.

Rutland worth a stop en route from station.

So many memories!
