Was that the game in 83/84 when Edwards scored that vital last minute goal? I was only 11. We weren't sat in the away end but on the side. I remember loads of fighting in the ground and it was carnage outside. We had the back window put in on the Fiat 126 we were in and had to drive back all the way to Sheffield.

Did anyone else in here get ambushed in the ground at Burnden park ,in the stand to the right of the big open end we were allocated. One of the most violent fights I can remember ,some proper big lads on both sides ,blood snot and other bodily fluids everywhere mingled in with contents of a fire extinguisher which helped it all come to an end and I don't think the thousands of Blades on the away end were aware.. Bolton and Stoke were the roughest places I think ,Farnsworth ,Chester-Le-Street and Knottingley should always be avoided for a night out with the lads.

And So We Shall Again.....

Been watching United thirty years and never been involved in any trouble, been watching England away for fifteen years and never got into any trouble, but got home from England v Russia in Marseille a couple of weeks ago (having witnessed no trouble) to a phone call from my mother lecturing me about how I should stop going to away matches as there is always lots of trouble and I could get into a fight and end up with a criminal record. I'm not going to be taking her advice any time soon.

Once went to Barnsley as a school kid and took a wrong turn afterwards. We were greeted by a few 40 something Barnsley fans who said "You have just made a big mistake coming round here lads" then sort of cornered us calling us cunts before walking away laughing.

A couple of the lads I was with apparently went on to be in the BBC but I lost contact with them after school

Same here in France ,went to Lille for Russia v Slovakia ,even got interviewed by Russian TV (its on the members photo thread) and never saw so much as an argument. The Russians had their own theories about Marseilles and I agree ,French special forces were behind the attacks on the England fans ,Russian fans of different clubs would never band together ,they are to thick to organise it and hate each other anyway. England fans were telling us stories of men walking into bars challenging England fans to fight and when one took up the challenge they were met with tear gas which drove them down alleyways where they were ambushed , all very organised.
In Lille it was a set up by the press ,the Russians had gone (I was on the train to Paris with most of them) and the guy who stripped and climbed the lampost was not known but that was the excuse for teargas and chasing round the town looking for the non existent Russians. Every Russian I met was only interested in beer and football.
Same at the other game I went Poland v Germany ,not even an argument apart from the French confiscating German flags but allowing the poles to keep theirs. Don't know why.

Used to mess around in MMA, BJJ, did some freestyle and Greco Roman (but not much), when I was a lot younger of course. Trained with the original Sheffield Shootfighters club, also did some stuff with London Shootfighters and trained on Saturdays up in Batley area with Neil Hall, who is now a referee in MMA.

You'll know Craig Burke from Barnsley Imguess ?

I got kicked all over at M'bro 1971. We took their kop early, they piled in at 14-55hrs and it kicked off. We were on their kop all match. Second half some big lumps targeted me, big fucker, cigar in his gob and loads of rings on his fingers targeted me and I was kicked down the terrace, Blades closed in and battered them.

Always had a reputation Boro

I've had a phone call from Rolloblades mate. Said he's been up all night tossing and tossing at the thought. Asked me to ask you to PM me your details.
He says dry or lubed and is it ok if he brings his glass topped table?

Yes. Once went to a behind closed doors game when a select Blades XI were playing a local team made up of Quakers, for Charity. Blades scored first and naturally I jumped up into the air to celebrate, then the next minute I'm surrounded by these guys wearing long dark blue coats and funny shaped hats. Kicked the shite out of me they did! I've never eaten that brand of porridge since.

I suppose if you went to matches in Daddies car in the 1960's 1970's and sat in the Stands instead of having to rely on public transport or go on the terraces you wouldn't have witnessed or come across much violence.

Hmm trying to ridicule people that didn't / don't fight at football matches is a bit below the belt imo.

Hear hear. Silly me for going to watch the match with my old man and having a nice drink before and after the game without ever getting caught up in any violence whatsoever. I can't believe I've missed out on so much enjoyable bloodshed.

I was out on London Rd New Years Eve and saw loads of old faces from the past, and had a laugh and a chat. I don't think you can tar them all with the same brush. There are those who (used to) enjoy a scrap and are twats, and there are those who are all right. Those in the former category (the minority) would rob charity boxes, punch bystanders, sell adulterated powders, and steal from their mates. Others were decent, passionate Blades who enjoyed a scrap with like-minded supporters of opposing teams.

The problem I have with that is, far too often innocent bystanders, sometimes even kids and the elderly, get caught up in these pleasant little encounters.

I wouldn't mind if they met up on the outskirts of the peak district, kicked 7 shades of shit out of each other and then shared a minibus to the match (hey, maybe the losers could even pay the fare).

Unfortunately they often take place in public and sometimes enclosed spaces, an experience ranging from the ridiculous to the downright terrifying for the vast majority.

I know a few people that used to like to fight at football and like Dkc stated they were nice enough chaps that just liked a few pints and a scrap and then there are the scum bags that I saw stealing off fellow blades (coats / hats etc) basically bullying anyone younger or smaller than them. To add to your point re innocents getting caught up in it, something else that annoys me is that thanks to the minority every single football fan in the country is treated like scum by the police. Me and a small group of mates like to go to the football, have a laugh and a few pints, we might even get drunk and rowdy but we don't fight or cause trouble and we actually are more likely to make friends with opposition fans than fight them but having said all that we still get treat like absolute shit by the police. Told where we can and can't go, forced out of town centres with no explanation, pushed and shoved about by bullies in uniform. Yes I know it's the copers fault as well but if it wasn't for football hooligans I also feel like the police wouldn't treat us all like shit.

Yes, it was by South Yorkshire police on BP forecourt.....i made a complaint to the ipcc but my solicitor said that the cctv had vanished. ! Amazing that

Me too after Id pretty much collapsed from drinking too much whiskey and running across the pitch to goad the Leeds fans, got a nice few kicks to the head from PC plod whilst being sick, that must be their regular hunting grounds.

Also got a few punches to the back of the head from some dirty piggy bastards on the way to the sty, reyt hard bastards, about 15 of them starting on 2 lads and a lass.

Didnt we all run on the pitch? police horses everywhere/unbelievable scenes.cracking night that was...not so much for you though.lol

The last match of the 88/89 promotion season at Ashton Gate. Got there early with a couple of mates and, knowing the city well, took a short cut across Greville Smyth Park to get to a decent boozer in the harbour area. Jumped by a bunch of typical Bristolian scrubbers - 'Oim gunna kick the shoite out of you' etc - and given a medium-grade kicking. Found out later that about an hour later someone was stabbed in the same park. Was a nasty day all round, remember coaches being bricked in the backstreets of Bedminster.

You've missed my point Cecil, I wasn't implying that fighting at football matches was big or clever but as a young working class football supporter back in the day you would have been very fortunate to have avoided trouble , especially if you were with other young lads and had to travel by train or bus to away matches.

What I think is below the belt are latter day fans in the safer more sanitised, stewarded, policed all seater stadium seeming to sneer or look down their nose at fans who had to negotiate their safe passage through all the bullshit back in the day.
I never ever went looking for trouble, I'm sure many did. I was battered for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Taking" the other fans kop was another way of saying you stood and watched the match from behind the goal at one end of the ground.

Football does seem to have become more "trendy" and socially acceptable in recent decades, we were treat like social lepers in the 1960's and 70's
