I think its obvious to see, the Blades have a serious lack of pace. I'm looking forward to next season and hopefully some young quality pacey players will have been added to the squad, ebanks blake would have been a good addition We need a younger hungrier team with more pace, lets hope we get it..

Agree totally. We were saying before the match, the only area we could see them pushing us was pace.

Perhaps if Bennett had let us get away with employing the tactics they did (blatently taking out anyone looked like breaking past a man) we'd have coped a little better.

It is a big worry though.

Speed, while having a good footballing brain sadly is lacking that bit of pace to be completely effective. Don't get me wrong, he's decent at what he does. But someone with his awareness of the game, willingness to get stuck in and with that yard or two extra running in his legs would be amazing.

Hasn't Blacky been on record as saying he wants Pace?

At least down the flanks.

Some pacy wingers & a creative midfielder would be on my wishlist if i was Manager. :):)

Strong rumour Brian Howards joining the Blades replacing
Speed a smashing bloke who has done the business in the past....

From what ive seen Howards been linked with every club in the League.

Would be a good addition IMO.

wouldn't say howard is the one to go for if we are looking for pace.

Nah, he's more mobile than Speed though (who's gonna be getting less and less, whilst still being a top player).

With a couple of speedy wingers and the desire for the team to fight for each other, he could work well.

I though Cotterill had pace - perhaps he wasn't as good last night as he sometimes has been, but his speed down the flank delivered a fair few balls into dangerous positions.

As Foxy said, it was difficult for our faster players (Squinn and Cotterill) last night as the Wednesday players often just took them out, but this is perhaps part of the problem - maybe what we need are pacey players with a bit more strength about them? As much as I like Squinn, he does sometimes seem a little lightweight, and we've often been muscled out of games this season by teams less skilful but more wily, physical and dirty than us.

True. I would gladly have him at the lane but when the thread is about lack of pace I thought someone else could have been mentioned.

I beg to differ - Speed is very rarely (if ever) cought out of position so I dont think his lack of pace is a major downfall to us - His footballing brain sees him predict the play and too many times to remember he has broken down play and intercepted passes, maybe not the in the first phase - perhaps because he cannot get there quick enough, but indefinately at the second phase of play - hes been immense and would increase the pension!

Definately, very similar to other older players we've previously had on that one.

I also think he's got more mobile as the season's gone on...

He is however going to lose his legs before long and we need a long term replacement :)

People seem to be forgetting a few seasons ago when we had Stuart McCall in midfield. Think of Speed now in the same role that McCall was then - winning the ball and passing. If he can do what McCall did he doesn't need pace.

I never ever thought I would see the words "pace" and "Squinn" in the same sentence :D

I thought that too Robbie, glad I'm not the only one. He's one of the slowest we've got, Speed would give him a run for his money.

We're crying out for pace, and a bit more physical presence on the pitch. I've been saying it most of the season. Will be an interesting summer with regards to who we'll try and bring in.
