When was the last time we had 3 players sent off

Pompey had 3 players sent off (Billy Gilbert, Mick Tait and Kevin Dillon) and Peter Beagrie for us too, all in the first half of our 1-0 win in Nov 1986

That was a strange game.

If my memory serves me right we won with a Paul Mariner own goal

I remember thinking that at least one of their sending offs was very harsh and the ref was a proper plonker who had obviously never played the game

The first and last sending off was harsh (Gilbert and Dillon). The linesman saw the clash between Beagrie and Tait, called the ref over and told him what he saw, before the clashing pair got the red card. In the Star on the following Monday Beagrie claimed that Tait had headbutted him but a friend told me that he saw Beagrie spit at Tait

Didn't Harry get sent off for going on the pitch and making the "wanker" symbol at the latest Udinese player to get challenged and go down like there was a sniper in the stands?
I was there that day and have always believed that it was the ref that he was gesturing at. Funniest thing I've ever seen at a game - and he wasn't encroaching onto the pitch either, he was in the centre circle!

The fun with that continued the day after when Bassett was interviewed about it on Calendar. He denied he'd done anything - and then they showed him the footage.

After that fiasco, we stuck our reserve team in every other game.

The ref was Kelvin Morton, a very poor referee who once awarded Crystal Palace 8 penalties in 3 games.

Mariner was in his last league season and was playing sweeper. When we took the lead Pompey brought Vince Hilaire on and stuck him up front on his own - I vaguely remember him coming close on a couple of occasions and perhaps hitting the post.

That was the first time since 1955 that 4 players went in a game. I think the league record is 5 now - the Chesterfield/Plymouth game with the huge brawl was one occasion with 5, and I think there have been others

Remember Neil Collins equalising at Scunny not so long ago when we had nine men. Obviously not three sent off but made me think of it.

I remember being 2-0 down away at Oldham (1991?) and we went down to nine men at half-time. We won the second half 1-0, but didn't quite manage to get an equaliser despite some pressure.

Yes in Sept 1991. Hartfield and Beesley got the red card in the 1st half. Deane (who didnt play for the next 10 weeks due to glandular fever) pulled a goal back just after half time

one of the best was a big win at notts county despite a red card think it was 4-1 or 5-1 , long time ago , before county did their ground up

Which match holds the record for the most red cards? asks Matthew Kay. Am I right in thinking it was a game involving Sheffield United and Italian opposition in the early 1990s?

We haven't tracked down your Anglo-Italian game, Matt, but we do know that the British league record for red cards is five, which happened twice in 1997.

As Dave Ede points out, five players were sent off in the Second Division match between Chesterfield and Plymouth on February 22 1997.

"A Plymouth player was sent off for a two-footed challenge, and then four players - including Kevin Davies for Chesterfield - were sent off following a mass brawl in the final minute, instigated by Bruce Grobbelaar pretending to have been injured by the shy and retiring Darren Carr," he says. "At least that's how I saw it."

And on December 2 that year, five players were also sent off in the Bristol Rovers v Wigan Athletic - four just before half-time.

Meanwhile, Ian Battersby points out that the most red cards dished out in one game - according to the Guinness Book of Records - was an astonishing 20.

"The incident occurred in league match between Sportivo Ameliano and General Caballero in Paraguay," he says. "When two Sportivo players were sent off, a 10-minute fight ensued and the referee dismissed a further 18 players. The match, not surprisingly, was abandoned."

Pompey used to come to the Lane and seemingly have a player sent off every year at that point in their history.
