That's because they're rarely incompetent. Some club has to get relegated. How would you prove incompetence? And I didn't address that particular point as I wasn't replying to you.I have never seen a football manager's contract but it would be pointless giving someone a 3 year contract but allowing you to pay them off with 6 months wages. This would give the manger no security - only the club - who could receive compensation if the manager is "poached" by another club as happened when CW was appointed by us. Of course if a manager has a 3 year contract and is paid off after one year he will not get the full 2 years salary as a pay off as it will be discounted for accelerated payment and the possibility he may get other employment. There will also be tax implications. It is pretty unusual for a manger to get another job before he has received his pay out. This is for the very reason that his pay out will be reduced so he will be advised not to take another managerial appointment in the meantime. My point is that I cannot recall hearing of a case where a club refused to pay off a manager or pay a reduced rate on the grounds of his incompetence.
And I've heard ex managers in interviews explaining exactly what I've said about 'six month clauses'. Why would a manager go on national radio and lie about it?
Both Adkins and Clough agreed their final compensation packages from their previous clubs just before they joined us; there was a delay because Clough wouldn't agree his until his staff's compensation was agreed and Adkins was on gardening leave at Reading, being paid monthly, until he joined us.
