Unfortunately, I think what they would do is get totally overrun when we didn't have the ball.

It's really one or the other plus a midfield enforcer in my opinion.

Someone like Morsy. Wish someone would start a thread on him :)

But with a Makelele type, but preferably taller to suit the division, playing behind them 2 in a central 3, I am confident it could work.

Ricky, any realistic suggestions for such a player me owd ??

I always like a five man midfield.
Just a matter of whether 3-5-2....4-5-1....4-2-3-1

And in a five I think Coutts will do quite well provided he has others alongside him on his wavelength and ability. Same can be said about Scougall.

I prefer 4-2-3-1
Back four as standard. Fleck and Coutts sitting deep, with Duffy in the middle of the three, Chapman wide with an other, and Clarke up top.
But with some of the players we have we do have other options.
 
Burton have got one more permanent signing to make, as well as hoping to secure two loans from Premiership sides.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a few of you get your wish and see NC take the "wage stealing thief" Coutts off your hands so that he can team up with Brayford again.

He's signed a few midfielders already in Irvine, Williamson and Dyer (who he's got playing wing back) but I reckon he'd make room for one more of his old favourites, especially on a free.

Coutts can play, I'm really surprised it's not worked out for him with the Blades but he's another one who signed to play for NC and must have been shocked to see him get the boot.

Some fella called Sam Morsy would be my shout. Comfortable in the deep midfield area, good on the ball, aggressive and also captain material. He's not very tall but you'll struggle to get much better in L1. Other options could be Anthony Grant and Diagouraga, not sure the latter would be realistic, but he'd be a great signing at this level.

I'd also prefer a three man central midfield. If you've got two decent footballers in there it can work very well offensively, and with the extra man you can afford someone who's a bit of a luxury. If we did it with Coutts and Fleck though we'd need goalscorers out wide - Lavery would be a good option from the left.

My pre requisite here is a 6'2" (Minimum) beast of a man. Think Basil Boli on steroids and stilts.

Morsey ? A good shout in a general sense. But not for the specific role I need.

Not sure about the other 2. Are they giant aggressive ball winning players that can fill in for the wing backs if they bomb on ?

Have another go.

Yep, they're both physically good. Grant's 6 foot and strong and Diagouraga is about 6"4 and covers ground well.

The main question mark against Morsy is athleticism/mobility but he seems defensively aware and I think his ability on the ball compensates for any shortcomings.

I would've liked Tom Adeyemi but he went to bloody Rotherham. Not a defensive midfielder but athletic and gets about the pitch well. Like a better Basham.

Strange that he was also fucking rubbish under Clough too, who also recognised this and played him even less than Adkins.

I'd be amazed if your mate comes back for him.

Vincelot, yes he did. Basham can't do that job. From what I've seen of Fleck though he can put himself about, he does it more than Basham which is astounding given his size.
We need an enforcer. A 3 man midfield of Diagouraga (Leeds), Coutts and Fleck would be superb. Then Duffy, Clarke and Sharp interchanging the 3 positions upfront, keeping the defensive line guessing. Sharp has enough technical ability to play an advanced wide position, but I'd expect him to be tucking in and getting into the box and the full back bombing on every time. If it doesn't work, we've got two options.

We either let Clarke and Sharp fight it out for the lone striker position, which both have proven they can play.
Or play Coutts on the right in a 4-4-2.

There are options, but despite what anyone says we needed to sign Clarke. We need that big lad up top, we haven't had anyone capable of winning headers for years and it's a pre-requisite of league one.

I agree with the vast majority of that. The only exception is that, for me, Paul Coutts is a central midfielder and nothing else. I know he's played wide right but players like him need to be constantly involved or they are ineffective. We know how he can drift out of games. Don't give him the chance. Always provided he's fully fit, make him the fulcrum of the team and he'll thrive.

If and when he establishes himself as a regular starter, I might well make him captain. The present encumbent, regardless of the current wider ranging debate, is wholly unsuited for the job.

Agree with a lot of that danny. It's far too early to pronounce on the Clarke/Sharp partnership, but I wonder if Done might be a speedier partner for Clarke who would capitalise on Clarke's good work? Done's best times at t'Lane has been when he's played upfront with a remit to roam. Done's pace, allied to his powers of anticipation, might be the difference we've needed, but of course Wilder will have to be the judge of who plays alongside who. I know the suggestion of dropping Sharp is sacrilege for some on here, but CW should consider anything that he thinks will improve the team's performance.

Of course you're right, we need a tough nut in the centre of midfield who's able to impose himself as well as orchestrate the shape of those around him. Maybe a tall ask, as the necessary players may not be available, but that's what's needed in my view. Fleck is a good acquisition who'll add to the team in ways we've lacked, but to get the best from the guy we need players around Fleck who can let him shine when it matters, allowing him to concentrate on what he does best.

Whilst I agree that a tall mobile centre-forward is desirable, that need not, and definitely should not, involve launching the ball in his general direction to "win headers". That is the easy but utterly ineffective way out for Hoof and Hopers. Far better to use such a player as a focal point of the attack; holding up the ball and bringing others into play, as part of a controlled team effort. That is so whatever league you play in.

He was coming back from serious injury when Clough was here ,Clough bought him as a player for the future ,and was breaking him in slowly, that's how we got him.
 
He did well yesterday but he has still a way to go before he totally convinces me. I imagine he will be in the top 3 wage earners at the club so he really needs to start playing like it
 
A good run in the team will do him good.
Who knows,we finally May see the best out of Coutts in a confident team.

Coutts had a good game yesterday. Initially was a bit anonymous but got into the game more as it went on. Very composed on the ball and linked play up well.
Not in anyway ITK but was told a few weeks ago by someone who's lad plays in the academy that Wilder is looking to give him a chance and thinks he may be able to find the player in him. Time will tell.....
 



Is it fair to him to be in the line of fire so soon after injury?

I'm concerned that should Norwood be out suspended or injured we turn to a Paul Coutts operating at 60% and expect too much.

If there is money to spare at all Vaulks would be better in the matchday squad right now.

Coutts would do better getting some games on loan where there would be less expectation and get his fitness up and a good preseason rather than being in the matchday squad for us pushing for top two.

With Lundstram not being up to it, one injury to Fleck or Norwood and we are quite exposed in my opinion

Anyone share the concern?
