Who should we go for, who are we likely to go for?

Few names I can think of...

Matthew Kill Gannon
Gordon Greer
Scott Wootton
Kelvin Wilson
David Wheater
Leon Barnett
(All free agents)

Kevin Long
Nathan Cameron
Aaron Pierre
Alex Baptiste

I think Kevin Long and Scott Wootton could be the best options there. Baptiste could be more of a possibility as time goes on. Killa and Pierre would be good but being left footers makes them less likely.

Any more names?

Matthew Kill Gannon - Left sided so no from me
Gordon Greer - No pace
Scott Wootton - Similar to the Wilson we have already brought in?
Kelvin Wilson - Think his best days might be behind him
David Wheater - Think his best days might be behind him
Leon Barnett - Think his best days might be behind him
Kevin Long - I know a lot of people have mentioned this guy, but can honestly say I haven't seen him play and has injury concerns.
Nathan Cameron - Number 1 on this list for me and a house mate of Hussey. Also team captain at Bury. I hope Leon Clark is a smokescreen for this guy/
Aaron Pierre - Left sided
Alex Baptiste - Cost too much

Personally, I think we should maybe look for loan for this 4 cb. We also could do with someone with pace alongside O'Connell.

Jake Wright
James Wilson
Jack O'Connell
Chris Basham
John Brayford

Wilson could yet turn out to be one of the best bets. It wouldn't surprise me if he started well, like McEveley did. He's got a point to prove and the move here is a great chance for him.

Whoever we sign I would assume will be right footed, and should have pace to compliment / compensate for JOC.

Isn't Cameron injured?

Personally, I will be disappointed if Brayford or Basham play CB, other than in a case of absolute emergency.
Wilder has said exactly that.

The deadline for McFadzean passed last Friday, hence the Burton switch.
We will have other targets, maybe Pearce or Morgan from Wigan, who have an abundance of centre halves, and are close to sign Jake Buxton

Perfectly adequate backups for Wright, Wilson and O'Connell though surely?

Will Basham really get a get in midfield if James Wallace stays fit? I can see it being Wallace and Fleck.

Long
Brayford Wilson O'Connell Hussey
Duffy Wallace Fleck Adams/Done
McNulty Sharp

But Wallace won't stay fit so Bash will be needed in CM. Lack of cover at RB means we'll need Brayford to stay there too.

It's not that those two are incapable of covering CB, it's that they are needed in their own position.

Rod McDonald
Ryan Cresswell
Reece Burke
Jack Stephens
Ryan Innis
Adedeji Oshilaja
Scott Cuthbert
David Edgar
Anthony Gerrard
Tom Parkes

I think Wilson and Wright have both been brought in as backup/competition (whatever you want to call it).

Secondly, we cannot rely on J. Wallace to play any games, should he be fit and displace Basham, then great. But to have him as plan A would be naive.

As for your selection, I would prefer something more like this:

Long
Brayford (New CB) O'Connell Hussey
Basham (New CM)
Duffy Fleck Adams
Sharp
I'm not sure if fleck has been brought in to play as a CM or a CAM, I hope it's the latter. Moving him further up may help him bag a few more goals, he started at Rangers as an attacking midfielder. Also the new CM could be someone physically strong to help enforce the midfield.

Young, very physical type, dominant in the air, and plays out from the back. Plenty of assets that have been missing since Maguire left. He's won POTY at Colchester too.

This the currently injured, racing to be fit for the start of the season Tom Eastman, who marshalled a team that had a goal difference of -42 in L1 last season Tom Eastwood!?!?!?

It's a thought I suppose...

Here's what one fan said of Eastman's performances last season:

'After last season and the standard of performance which I feel was well below acceptable it is a surprise that a contract offer is still to be signed. Tom was in last parts awful making mistake after mistake which lead to goals being conceded. His marking at corners and free kicks was dreadful and I lost count of the clearances he made which went straight out of play. He was a shadow of the player who made such a difference two seasons ago making challenges and throwing himself in front of players to block shots (the last match of the season against Preston he was brilliant) . But that has gone and sentiment plays no part in football he contributed to letting in nearly 100 goals last season and should be given 7 days from the contract offer to sign or be released. I would not even offer a contract let's look elsewhere at central defenders we all know that was our biggest weakness last season.'

Probably why he's on Barney's radar...

Yes, it's almost as if he's nigh on powerless at the back of a whole team containing lower league one players.

Everyone's 'an expert' but a quick search reveals the bloke will miss pre-season and be struggling to start the campaign...this after a shocker of a season...but hey, I'm sure that could be just what Wilder's after...

Craig Morgan would be a superb signing and definitely top of my list. His last 2 seasons in this division have resulted in promotion. Plus, C. Morgan has a ring to it doesn't it :) but I think Wigan will only let him go if they sign Buxton.

If not, any from Kevin Long, Anthony Gerrard, Nathan Cameron, Rory McCardle or Kirk Broadfoot will do.
We need them to fit a certain 'mould'. They need to be the lynchpin in the defence and set an example for the rest. We can't have any shirkers.
