Player Suggestion Some new free agents to sniff at.

For the record, I have never knowingly sniffed a free agent. In fact, I've only ever sniffed one player - James Beattie when I met him outside Piccolino's in town. Wearing some kind of cologne, of course, but fuck knows what.

Hai Karate, he spunked the rest of his cash on the Lamborghini.

It's more than likely that the majority of our new players will come from League 2 over these past few years and registered in the Wilder's mind for the opportunity he's got now. Who is Wilder's scout? Did he spend loads of time searching the Championship/ Premier League? Probably not, League 1 yes no doubt.

As things stand we do not need any new strikers, we have five who are on contract and not transfer listed.

Couple of good older central defenders in the O.P. if the manager is looking for experience there, two old, two young may be the way forward.

Experienced playmaker/ vice captain/ organiser of midfield? Yes please. Hammond and Coutts have to be shifted a.s.a.p., let's not settle for immobile players.

Interesting point. Does Wilder have to shift a number of the seven transfer listed players before completing his squad or can he carry on regardless and the club worry about the seven wages if a number stick with us? Settlements of proportions of remaining wages on contracts would be the cleanest way forward so the manager can make progress unfettered.

Looking at the O.P. you can see the temptation to sign players of real quality but at the wrong stage of their careers. Yes some exceptional characters can still have the drive and ambition in later years but they are well known in the game and probably already snapped up. It helps if the manager has some sort of connection or relationship with one or two who might fancy linking up with him again, though even then time marches on as with Hammond.

I like the strategy outlined by McCabe and Wilder, let's stick to it as far as possible.

"As things stand we do not need any new strikers, we have five who are on contract and not transfer listed."

Sorry mate but I have to disagree with you on this one .......

We have one striker who can score goals consistently ( Sharp ) and I don't believe that the Sharp / Adams partnership works well at all.

I believe that we need a big striker, with pace, power and the ability to score goals ( everything Sammon didn't have ) and Adams, & Done can be impact / squad players.

Bobby Zamora? Fuck, I sit on row P well, to the left of the goal as you view it from the pitch. Right in his firing line......

We need centre backs so Turner and Greer or possibly Wheater would be ideal for us.

We also need goalkeepers so would be happy with Gilks or Lewis. Not sure Kenny would be any use to us other than the bladey bladeness factor.

I actually tried sign back Kenny on FIFA and he told me to get lost.

Looking at those out of contract in league 1, wouldn't mind us having a look at the following;

Adam Hammill - Barnsley 5 goals
Brad Inman - Crewe 10 goals
Erhun Oztumer - Peterborough 6 goals
Jack Payne - Southend 9 goals

Hammill has always looked decent against us, and he can actually put a decent ball into the box, unlike most of our lot.

Inman is only 24, and he's bagged 10 this season in a poor Crewe side, more than Coutts will get from now until the end of time.

Oztumer ran the show against us at the Lane this season, and before someone complains he's not big enough, it's about time we realised footballing ability comes ahead of size & strength. That Messi lad isn't the biggest but seems to do okay.

Payne has been Southends stand out player by all accounts. I imagine a Championship team will come in for him, but there's no harm in testing the waters.

"...Bold reds are ex Blades obviously. ...", Kilgallon in bold red then please! ;)

Some interesting names but the ones I have liked in the past, are all getting on a bit now.

Depends if you regard him as one.

Kenwyn jones would score enough goals in league one to give any team a chance it be wether he would drop to this level and accept div 1 terms..........i know its not a priority up front but him and billy would be frightening

Any team with Zamora, JCR and Howard in it would put the spectators in ever present grave danger

From the league 1 list I wouldn’t be disappointed to see any of the following arrive.

Adam Hammill- Quality winger for this level.

Jamie Proctor- If cheap enough, some physical presence to mix it up off the bench. Prefer John Akinde though.

Shane Cansdell-Sheriff- Been very solid for Burton

Stephen Bywater- Experienced GK that could bring Long and Ramsdale on.

Lucas Akins- Was Burton’s stand out player at the lane. Pace and power.

Tom Eastman- Highly rated CB and might be cheap from relegated Colchester.

Alex Gilbey- Highly rated young CM again from relegated Colchester.

Sam Ricketts- Quality experienced defender.

Bradden Inman- scored goals in an awful Crewe team.

Jimmy Ryan- We need a defensive midfielder if we’re moving Hammond on.

Jamille Matt- Strange one and will raise eyebrows after being deemed not good enough for Fleetwood but whenever I’ve seen him, I’ve been impressed and he’s coming off a good loan spell with Plymouth. Cheap option for the bench. Over 6 foot and reasonably mobile. Prefer John Akinde though.

Stuart Nelson- Experienced GK who did well against us. Good cover/competition for George.

John Egan- Had a great season at CB for Gillingham.

Jermaine McGlashan- PACE

Brennan Dickenson- Tall, young, quick, wide player. Possibly a bit of a rough diamond.

Mark Beevers- Experienced no-nonsense CB.

Ed Upson- Always seems to do well at this level (even if he doesn’t quite cut it in the championship).

Kgosi Ntlhe- I was very impressed with him when Posh beat us 2-1 at the lane under Clough. Quick, aggressive etc. Flynn didn’t get a kick against him.

Jermaine Anderson- Young CM who has scored a few for Posh this season. Looks quick and strong and a real prospect.

Erhun Oztumer – We all saw his quality at the lane for Posh this season though I don’t think he could play in a 442.

Souleymane Coulibaly- Tricky, pacey winger who scored a good individual goal against us at London Road early in the season.

Ebo Andoh- Quick, tricky winger who caused us loads of problems at Vale. Possible JCR replacement.

Ian Henderson- Scored fairly consistently for Rochdale last couple of seasons.

Jayson Leutwiler- Decent ‘keeper who could challenge Long.

Junior Brown- Was excellent against us at the Lane though I confess I know little else about him.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival- CB that can play LB too. Decent size and strengh though he was more one I thought Adkins might favour to play LCB in the 352.

Myles Weston- Pacey wide option for the bench to replace JCR.

Daniel Bentley- Highly rated young GK. Will go higher than league 1.

Jack Payne- Scored 9 goals from midfield (including in both games against us). Energetic box to box midfielder could be just what we need.

Yaser Kasim- technically good player who always looks very comfortable in possession.

Jonathan Obika- Gives us some real pace up front to stretch teams.

Paul Downing- Has had a good season for Wallsall.

Romaine Sawyers- We all know about him.

Sam Mantom- Seems a decent all round CM from what I’ve seen of him.

Anthony Forde- had impressed out wide for Wallsall.

Reece Wabara- Big, reasonably mobile defender who can play CB or full back and is a threat at set pieces.

I agree, that's why I said "as things stand" but with all the other places in the squad needing urgent attention the striker part of the squad needs less attention and will have to see departures before signings; departures evolve, let's see who is in demand and whether it's worth taking the cash.

Actually I don't think striker is Adams' best position and Wilder might see him deeper, so there might be scope there.

I'm not concerned about height at all, but pace and mobility is desperately required.

Calvert-Lewin will be a big asset aerially once he beds in.

He is an ex-Blade, so yes

Used to think that until I saw him rocking out in Gatecrasher the night before games and then as soon as the whiff of another team being interested in him, he lost interest in United and his performances showed this so nah not in my eyes.

Suggest Jake Reeves at Wimbledon who may yet not come up to League 1. Outstanding in the play-off semi-final last week and against us in our semi at Bramall Lane v Brentford. I've followed him since that night.

Box to box, great engine, terrier in the tackle, keeps the ball well.

But we've never played in a semi against Brentford?

Agree on Payne cracking little player, Ipswich have been linked with him, but definitely should be looking to bring in players of this calibre.

Play-off semi recently.
I think it was the 2-2 game Woody, where Maguire got sent off and they ended up with 9..it was just before the play off's when we had Morgs in charge, and lost out to Yeovil in the semi's..Agree that Reeves played well in that game.
