I know TC and the rest gave a huge amount of pleasure to those that watched them so I don't want to sound critical but let's not forget we got relegated with them in the team and throughout the 'glory days' our older supporters hark back to, they won nowt.
The trouble with the 75/76 team that got relegated was that we had run out of steam as a team age wise ,and the recruits weren't of the same class .id love pleasure like that again at the lane .

What about before that? Still didn't win owt or get to a proper final? So were they overrated or underachievers?

It's hard saying just "black people" or "white people" because there are sub-divisions of race:

This is a great point, I read a really good article on athletes and why it is lazy to say all good sprinters/distance runners are black - you can actually narrow it down apparently to descendants of a particular part of Africa. Good article on it by the BBC that I read from a link on here I think.

Define 'that type of player'. Elegant all round midfielders? Gascoigne, Le Tissier, Pirlo, Iniesta, Xavi, Scholes, Guardiola, Riquelme.

Juan Roman Riquelme was many things but an "all round midfielder" he was not. Probably best described as a luxury player to build a side around, he definitely wasn't keen on the defensive side of the game.

Juan Sebastien Veron would be another all-rounder.

But the 2016 version of Tony Currie, would be much fitter, he wouldn't be out drinking, smoking and eating fish and chips like the 1971 version was.
Ken Furphy was very concerned about TC's addiction with chocolate caramels

Lots of reasons, 2 main ones:

Socio-Economic reasons:
Swimming is an expensive sport, and a lot of money has to be spent of facilities. Money that most African nations simply don't have.

Biological and Physiological reasons:
Without getting too in depth, muscle and bone density, and muscle distribution.

It's hard saying just "black people" or "white people" because there are sub-divisions of race: East African's are generally physiologically different to West Africans. Nordic and North European white people are generally physiologically different to Mediterranean white people.

In short, it's nature vs nurture and both play a part.

Yep, I remember reading an article on this some years ago, it said bone density was the main reason, or one of the main reasons, something else as well, maybe it was to do with hips or something like that, can't remember but the article was an interesting read (explained why black athletes from the US and Jamaica excel at sprinting while athletes from small regions of Kenya and Ethopia excel at long distance and why the vast majority of javelin, discuss, pole vault and swimming were white).

Good article there. You're right though. A Somalian looks completely different to a Nigerian while both being "black" and a Greek looks completely different to a Swedish person while both being white.

The Jamaican sprinter phenomenon is truly fascinating. Genetic advantages (and disadvantages) seem to be accentuated in remote island nations/regions.

Samoa is a good example of this, producing a lot of huge, naturally athletic people.

hadn't TC left for Leeds by then??
and John Flynn got injured

Wow. Our greatest post war side managed fifth in the league once. And lost a cup final no one under 40 has heard of.

I'll remember that when my Spurs mates are talking about winning the double or the UEFA Cup, or I hear gooners going on about how many leagues they've won.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that team had some good players but the fact they are venerated despite winning nothing is perhaps one of the reasons our successive owners have taken our support for granted.

perhaps you are supporting the wrong team mate :D

There's another reason why Jamaican sprinters are very fast.......

Smaller gene pool and natural selection? Afro-Carribeans are, in the main, descended from those poor souls who were transported from west Africa. Just to survive the journey you had to be strong and I'd guess the ones chosen as slaves were the big ones who looked like they could work hard in the first place.

Similarly, the small islands in Polynesia, for example were populated by those who survived difficult boat journeys from wherever they originated from.

So you get tough people who only have other tough people to breed with.

Re Jamaican sprinters. It's their ancestral West African genes that give them the edge. They also have one of the best sprinter training set ups in the world.

Combine these two factors with the fact they have warm weather training pretty much 365 days a year and the advtange is then magnified.

I feel like I may regret asking, but, enlighten me...

Eating other humans, paddling huge war canoe's does build you up.

If you watch any UFC and see Mark Hunt, the Samoan, in the heavyweight division you wonder whether he may have never stopped eating other humans!

You've hit the nail on the head: the small gene pool is the key.

Your points about slavery are valid too, slaves were cherry picked based on their physique and stature. Not natural selection, but unatural selection.

As for Polynesia, it's more than just cultural why New Zealand have such a strong rugby team: Maoris (indegenous Polynesians) are another example of genetically blessed peoples.

Not my fucking choice really. You support your local team. That was the Blades.

Not always. In my case it was support the team inflicted on you by a previous generation. Bastards. I'd probably be an Arsenal or Spurs fan if it weren't for that. And most likely just as miserable judging by the ones I know!

It could be argued that if he moved to Everton, he'd spend 6 months in their U-21s and then get a loan to League 1 where he'd start games.

He would make the bench, possibly, for us.

He may as well stay with us I think. I'm obviously not a professional footballer! However! If I was I would only want to move to another club when I knew I stood a decent shout at playing first team in my new club, otherwise you might as well stay where you are and then wait for a club that offers first team football at a higher level, as opposed to just signing for a club but playing for their under 21's. So many examples down the years of players who were really highly rated but then lost their way moving too early. Nick Blackman and Jordan Slew spring to mind in recent years. Kyle Walker was possible an exception but it was so obvious that he was destined for great things that he would instantly be in demand on loan in the Championship and not long after that back in the Prem. For every Kyle Walker there are probably five that don't make it and then have to start over again.

Yep, big lad and been around for years, and of course you only have to remember Jonah Lomu if you want an incredible physical specimin. One of the nicest blokes I ever met, and (believe it or not) extrememly intelligent, he was an investment banker by trade, and still advised private clients even after his fame and fortune.

They also have a shallow gene pool in Barnsley ........ due to there only being 8 families who live there ....

Hence the webbed feet, pink eyes and 6 fingers ..... :D
