Really? What Cups did he win?

It's getting a bit painful you know, reading your eulogies. I should not read them, but there's a sort of morbid curiosity.

Two semi finals in two seasons. None of the big four achieved that over the same two seasons.

By the way, out of everything I've listed, you've pulled one line, no acknowledgement of the 15 seasons of improvement, which is a brilliant achievement by the way.

Painful?

Would it be painful if I kept coming on hammering him? Like some of the other posters are doing? Of course not.

It's only painful cos you don't agree with me. Feel free to ignore them in future.

I'm very aware I'm in a tiny minority.

YOU judge it that way Pete. I can't help that.

I rate him cos in his 17 and half seasons as a manager he's improved the finishing position of the club he's been at 15 times.
I rate him cos he's won 3 promotions.
I rate him cos at every club he's been at he's broken a couple of their previous records. (points' goals scored, consecutive wins, number of clean sheets - obviously not all together)
I rate him cos he usually knows what needs improving and he improves it.
I rate him cos he's honest with his players, even if it means freezing them out.
I rate him cos he's loyal to those players who work hard for him.
I rate him cos he's got the balls to play young players and let them get experience, even though he knows its his nuts on the line results wise.

I've watched him for 17 and half years (as a manager) and thirteen before that as a player, you watched him for 18 months - 18 fairly successful months by the way. At one point he had you the best cup side in the country.

You've decided why I rate him isn't right. You and others occasionally make that very personal.

I don't know why you and others hate him so much, I'm not a Blade as you keep reminding me but I've seen managers take your club much further backwards than anything you're throwing at Clough.

Adkins for example. Has taken you so far backwards it should be smacking you in the face.

I'm well aware of your borderline obsession with the man, and since I became aware of your deeply personal connection to him, it's not something I've ridiculed.

I've also had very little interaction with you on here (as far as I'm aware) she therefore haven't "kept telling you that you aren't a Blade".

But you've always had a complete blind spot with him, and never really been able to accept (even perfectly reasonable) criticism of his management.

You say there's no point in debating with some people about him, but in truth there's little point debating him with you due to the completely one sided nature of your arguments and your inability to accept criticism and overly sensitive response.

And for the record, I don't hate him in the slightest.

I don't rate him as a football manager either.

Good grief bridgfordblade, if I ignored every poster I disagree with there would be no point being on the forum, just reading stuff I agree with would be boring (and narcissistic). But most posters (yes even you Barney) have a change of record.

But to clarify, the most successful cup teams? They win cups.

Yes, I enjoyed the cup runs, why would I not, but the runs finished at the penultimate hurdle. Last season was over well before that obstacle. I don't know about his 15 years of improvement, because I really don't care. I care for my team and in my opinion Clough left a legacy of failure that the current incumbent has not dealt with. The reasons may not lie at the door of Clough or Adkins, the evidence suggests the problem lies at Board level. That may excuse or explain the lack of success, but there WAS a lack of success and continues to be so.

Borderline obsession? He's a sporting hero of mine as much as someone like Tony Currie, Bob Booker or Brian Deane is to you lot.

What's the difference between my borderline obsession and yours Pete. You follow a club, blindly. I follow an individual blindly.

If this was ANY OTHER SPORT than football and I had my favourite, not a dickie bird would be uttered. I used to idolise Alex Higgins and hated Steve Davies with a passion. It's sport it does that to you.

I'm ok to debate, I'm ok to admit he made mistakes, hell I'm even ok to say he failed at Sheffield United, his ultimate target was to get promotion last season, he failed.

What I'm struggling to accept is the fact he's blamed for this season as well.

The personal stuff, and if it's not you then fair enough, sorry, but the personal stuff is what does my head in.

It's very different, I'm sorry if you can't accept this but it is.

I blame him for the poor, slow, creativity free, expensive squad he left behind that we can't move on. And how this has hampered the ability to recruit this season.

He bought them all, Im not sure who else i can blame.

If it helps, I blame Adkins for signing Hammond, Woolford and Sammon (if he did).

I also think he'd do better then Clough given the same resources due to his better record.

I/WE do not care what Clough's achievements were at other clubs.
Why do you assume some of us do?

He failed here.

That's all that matters.

He failed.

WE support Sheffield United FC.
Not Nigel Clough FC.

Anyone want to add what the FC means after Clough... but play nicely.
About sums up my thoughts on him.

I didn't ask you to care about his last 15 years.

I was answering Pete's post about why I rated him - ME - not you.

You don't rate him I do.

He's got the second highest win % of all your managers, so you must have had some pretty big failures in charge of your club, especially under the stand up, salt of the earth Kevin McCabe.

The guy before him had an 8% win record, the guy after him, the saviour 40.7%.

Maybe sometimes you should be careful what your chairman wishes for.

Does Clough know of this "obsession" ?

Let's avoid the personal stuff eh? The sarcasm does my head in.

What's good for the goose....

have you seen some of the shit Lydon (SBT or Herbert? I still can't work out which one) dishes out?

Personal? oh my, I sarcastically called Nigel Howard Adkins the saviour and it's that that does your head in.

I'm a disgrace.

Nowt said about the fuck off clough you cunt posts, they're fine.

Nigel Clough is your sporting hero? That's Nigel, and not his Dad? Really?

Who's your second one, Eddie the Eagle?

I was jesting, but your reaction says it all really. You tell people to not say mean personal things about your idol. Then almost immediately refer to the current Blades manager (employed after, you rightly pointed out, Clough failed) as the "saviour". You really are a precious soul, aren't you.

To be fair, his Dad is way above him hero wise, but he's dead so even I struggle to follow him.

I also idolise Stuart Pearce, Des Walker and Roy Keane but so far none of those have gone to manage the Blades.

Give over, you're giving as good as your getting and i'm standing my ground.

no more no less.

If Nigel Adkins is your sporting hero and me calling him the saviour has offended you, then I apologise unreservedly.

Better?

Now then, there was a guy on BM that followed Clough around. He posted as a blade, until he got sacked. Summat like that anyway. Help me out with the name please BM'ers, or even the man himself...I'd be lying if I said it wasn't bugging me.

That is also true, I think United would benefit from a decent DoF and let Adkins have a couple of seasons to rebuild the club, too many sacked managers. May I ask a question that may upset you? Why the hell did the club get a Desso Pitch? We didn't get them until the Academy upgrade in which they're required. You could have got three or four players for the cost

I'm LYDON - I don't get upset.

Whoever decided on a new pitch wasn't me.
The pitch the previous seasons were in diabolical states even in early November.
A new pitch wasn't essential, but necessary.
If it wasn't 2015, it would be now.

Now I got to draw the line at this. I've just about had enough of bridgfordblade calling Adkins "saviour"... But coming on here criticising our Desso? I'll tell you.. The pitch has been the most consistent performer this season. I enjoyed the pre-season on pitch-cam and ever since August there's been many a Saturday afternoon I've watched the grass grow and been glad of the entertainment.

There was Closeasablade which is the guy posting here. He has a personal history with Clough and it's natural why he is so defensive of him. The other one was a very weird man by the name Trevor1946 who was another Clough fan who as far as I know just decided to follow him around based on absolutely nothing. Can't imagine how many dull games he has watched in his time

Catch up man, you're not even Closesea...

Edit, this was slightly funnier before everyone else chimed in first...
