What's happened to John Lundstram?

Last season fans were split on him. Some saw him as an inadequate and a poor replacement for Paul Coutts, albeit he was kept out of the team due to the holy trinity of Norwood, Fleck and Duffy. Others believed he was technically one of our most gifted players and we hadn't seen his full potential yet.

Over the summer he deservedly earned a starting role given his performances in pre-season, and at the start of the season he was one of our most consistent players and arguably best players.

Over the winter his performances went downhill and he wasn't as effective as he was earlier in the season. We then signed Berge and this saw a quick change in Lundstram where, having lost his shirt to Berge, he upped his game again when given the chance and we once again saw the same player from pre-season and the start of the season.

Granted he's had a recent injury, but since returning after lockdown he's looked half hearted and ineffective.

I'm not singling him out for blame or making him a scape goat. I'm genuinely curious as to what's going on with him. How he can go from zero to hero and back to zero so quickly?

He's obviously a good player but is maintaining this higher standard of performance too much for him each week, is it psychological, is the contract situation disruptive and his agent has distracted him?

It's a shame because when he's at his best he's a great player, one of the only ones who'll make the brave choice to have a shot on goal from outside the box, something that no one else does where we can sometimes be guilty of over playing in the build up.

Nice long post, but Lunny was among a whole team that just didn’t step up tonight.

shite performance, onto Everton. Smash them and Southampton and end the season on a high

Like I said, I'm not singling him out based on tonight, or making him any kind of scapegoat, I'm genuinely curious as to what's happened to him over the season.

Two words ...................... Agent & Contract.
His days here are numbered if that's how he is going to play.

Player wants new contract on high wages.

Player doesn't get contract on high wages

Player loses form

Bit coincidental for my liking. Probably trying to stay injury free before moving on...

Was a disjointed performance. No cohesion and as such can't single one out for it..The whole team goalie apart made error aftèr error . Poor passing poor choices. No one won a personal battle.
Leicester were back on their A game and worked harder than us. We had to be at our best but we werent. On the day 2-0 really flattered us

Lunny's never been the same since the VAR toe incident. :)

Ever since the rumours of a post Bournemouth bust up and contract dispute he has seemed distant and uninterested. Get rid while we can still get cash in my opinion.

I must have been living in a cave?! ........What's this? The contract issue is well known but I hadn't heard about any bust up.

Completely agree with the rest of your post though.

Rumours that his celebration after scoring (pointing at himself and running off type of thing) ruffled some feathers in the playing and coaching staff its not anything drastic or concrete but it was something going around at that time.

Oh yeah, remember that celebration now.

If there was any kind of bust up he wouldn’t be anywhere near the team. Just have to look at what happened with Duffy.

He'll fancy his chances of getting Villa or Leeds to throw 60k a week with a nice chunky signing on bonus

Player languishes in L1 with Oxford
Player gets chance with a bigger club at higher level
Player struggles to fill boots of former maestro
Player has a good 3/4 months and thinks he's made it
Player and agent want new contract
Player and agent get greedy
Player sulks and plays shit

Think your just over thinking it. He had a bad game quality wise however he was constantly making himself available to receive the pass.

He was looking to make things happen when he came on. Its easy to over complicate things and say its about contracts or this or that that we really have no clue about.

Could it really be as simple as he just had a bad game like the rest of the team?

Observation. Comfortable using either foot, doesn't have to corkscrew to get ball onto only useable hoof.

First it was McBurnie , then Berge , now Lunny ... stop fkg scapegoating individuals when the team turns in a collectively poor performance

Re-read the opening post and try again please. It's all well and good accusing people of scapegoating when you've read the headlines and not the story. No offence and not meaning to start an argument.
