If you're good enough, you're old enough.

One surmises that if he's not getting picked it's because he's not good enough as opposed to the age of these kids.

I'm all for a hungry tyro getting a go ahead of Lundstram, but what does it say to the likes of Osborn / Bogle / Brewster if we start shipping youngsters into the team when they've been on the bench for most of the season?

dont think we’ve got any youngsters to push Osborn, bogle or Brewster. Osborn’s under 23’s counterpart of Andre brooks who has scored some good goals but has only recently established himself as a 23s starter. Bogles would be seriki but he’s raw and certainly nowhere near bogle and brewsters would be either jebbison or Hackford and they’re likewise both very raw only ndiaye represents a real chance of currently breaking into the first team as a forward.

It’s the only way to be 100% sure but I think the process is usually to identify players who stand out in the youth teams, then get them training with the first team to see what they’re like. If they are technically and physically capable, the coaches have to make a bit of a value judgement on their character and personality and decide whether they’re mentally mature enough. If they tick that box too, then they’ll usually get a run out.

I remember hearing about Gerrard’s first training session with the first team and he levelled one of their senior players with a full blooded tackle. The other seniors thought “looks like we’ve got one here”.
Absolutely, which is why as much as I want to see someone like Zak in the side instead of someone like Lundstram, I trust the coaching staff to know when they're worth it.

Just got to hope it's not misplaced trust!

I've heard that one about Gerrard before, always reminds me of the Kolo Toure story too, where he was on trial and went full in on Henry!

Hecky’s been rubbish as a first team manager but he seems to have a very good reputation as a youth coach, so has Lester. We’re all keen to see these kids play, it would give us all a lift but we have to trust those who are responsible for their development more than our own judgement, based mainly on watching games in the u23s third division.
I’d guess PA wants these kids coming through too, if they’re good enough, so I’d be surprised if it hadn’t been discussed and evaluated. Well, more disappointed than surprised I suppose.

"More disappointed than surprised"

New club motto? 😅

If the prince does truly want us to develop our own players to such a degree that they support and supplement the first team to a greater extent than one player every 5-10 years then a jump up to being a top tier academy is a must.

I agree but we know that will cost money and it’s probably money we don’t have. So, it’s imperative that we go up again and get more PL money.

Yeah the money for something like that has to be prem generated or like Norwich sales generated with Maddison.

We're losing every game.
There is a player playing in his position who appears to be coasting,
Surely 10-15 minutes wouldn't hurt?
All for that mate. I just think it's too much to ask him to be one of the first names on the team sheet (which he would be if seen as Lunny's replacement)
He may well quickly lose his confidence if what he does week in, week out at u23 level fails to produce in the Premier League.
It's a huge step up in challenge, and (as we saw with George Long) a potential damage to progression if not handled properly.

N'Diaye is 21, hardly a baby. So he's got to get a chance soon or there's no point having him here...

The youngsters are obviously not good enough for the Premier League but neither are most first team regulars.

The idea to give the youngsters some minutes now is to see if they can push on and make a stake for a place next season.

We know for certain how good (or bad, rather) the senior squad is. Would you keep on playing Lundstram and lose, just to say good bye or see what the unknown younger players really are made of? Most of them are surely not good enough for next season but neither are Lundstram and what is the worst that can happen? Another loss?! Oh no!

If you work on the basis that all the youngsters are not good enough then they puts them on par with many of the first team.

It will be a sink or swim environment. But if you have 6 youngsters a decent amount of minutes then 1 of them may save you a signing.

Maybe Gordon stops you recruiting a Basham back up.

Maybe N'Diaye stops you recruiting a Didzy back up.

Maybe Brunt stops you recruiting an additional midfield option.

And so on.

I usually hate this argument, but we really can’t do any worse and the pressure of a few first team games in the prem might create a diamond or 2.

Scanned through seems about a few mins from the end. Zak kinda says Wilder was good and that he tested your character, which sounds pretty normal. Didn't sound anything negative.
Unless there is other bits in there but I'm not watching all of that either!

I don’t buy this money we don’t have. How much would it cost to get a new training ground and up graded academy? £10 million or even £ 15 million? We have earned probably £300 million from 2 seasons in the PL. I know we have had to spend a lot on wages, transfers but the cost of an academy should have been affordable out of this amount.

All those saying I’m not sitting through it, I’m half way through it and it’s really interesting. Comes across really well. Will finish it off this afternoon

There's something quite nice about it. Young lads similar age chatting about football from the perspective of an U23 on the cusp of first teams action.

Couldn’t agree more mate. Interesting insight into the first team changing room too when he’s been in and around the bench.

Managed up to ‘monumentous’. I don’t mean the lads any offence really, but if I was sat infront of these three lads on the bus listening to their conversation I would probably get off the bus and wait for the next one. I’m sure that says more about me than them but still, I’m not listening to it.

It definitely does Berlin 😂

It's actually quite a good interview, fair play to those lads - I've seen much worse from experienced journalists and the like. Brunt seems a good sort, definitely a down to earth sort with his head screwed on.
