no question - TC

JOC might have a magic hat - TC could actually do magic with a football as the song below proclaimed.

UTB

Best has to be Deane (a legend in every sense and picked for England *as a Blade) but to keep it interesting here’s my best 11 based on who I have been able to witness in the flesh during my era;

Kelly
Nilsen
Wimola
Jags
Beard (clough season)
Brown
Fleck
Whitehouse
Hodges
Deane
Agana

Subs:
Tracy
Morris
Edwards
Walker
Whitehouse
Beesley
Brooks

Manager: Sir Tufty

TC, Woody just too close to call. Like Blade58 I also had a soft spot for McAllister, but for injury would've been up there with Hodgy as our best ever keeper. And a big mention for Geoff Salmons.

Chris Morgan. What a player, what a captain and what a man.

Good call for Len Badger. I've said for many years that he was the best slide tackler I ever saw, an art that is all too rare in the modern game.

He had this incredible ability not only to win the tackle but at the same time cushion the ball between his leg and thigh , keeping it perfectly under control so that he was able to jump up with the ball at his feet and play us out of danger.

He is definitely in my Greatest Blades XI line up ............. but that's for another time.
Don't know whether you saw it, but the United v Northampton video that Silent put up on the old photos thread a few days ago has a perfect example of the slide tackle. It is about 6 or 7 minutes in, a little before the first goal. It wins big praise from Kenneth Wolstenholme. Not long after there is a typically neat interception by Joe Shaw.

Loved Woody as a kid, but Glenn Cockerill was a colossus for us from day one. Without him I don’t think we’d have got promoted. Absolutely fuming when we sold him for peanuts to Southampton

Dane Whitehouse for all of the reasons already mentioned .

I loved it when Brads , Dane and Mitch Ward all played for us , Blades through and through and good footballers too . All three of em still go to the matches now aswell and all 3 of em still like a beer or two . Proper Blades .
I thought mitch ward was a pig? I played for junior blades with him early/mid 80's,and could have sworn he was a pig, lived just off lane top as a youngster he did.

Dane. For reasons I think should be obvious to all who watched his career.

Rocco Richardson was a great slide tackler too.

Few of the United Players that weren;t your obvious Deane, Curry or Sharpe.

Mike Trusson - bought from Plymouth in the early 80's.

Remember at Nothampton ( When they had a cricket pitch). United were shite until 2 goals from M.T. in the last 2 minutes, one a bullet header and we won 2-1.

All Smiles just as you were waiting for the boos.

Billy Whitehurst - John Gannon - Chrissy Porter - Carl Asaba. Unsung hero's.

In my opinion anyways. Never gone with the Norm. But still a Blade.

I remember listening to the radio. 5 minutes from the end losing 1-0. No further communication till the match ended, I was sad we had lost then the reporter said 1-2 and Mick Trusson had scored both goals. What a lovely surprise.

king keith for me left foot right foot goals free kicks like beckham and hardly ever took pens and that goal against bristol rovers

He's definitely a Blade mate . Him and Carl Bradshaw used to go to matches with us when they were out injured/suspended etc . I remember a very lively away trip to Blackburn With him and Carl many moons ago ;) I bumped into him in the Crown last season on London Road after a match and had a good catch up with him . He doesn't get to every game now but still go's when he can .

Carl Bradshaw was rumoured to be a pig aswell to be fair but as was the case with Mitch Ward it was just rumours with no real substance . In Carl's case when he was signed up with the pig's he used to come to the Lane with us on the beer . He could be a very , very naughty boy at times :D:D:D

No I hadn't seen it , but I have now and many thanks for the info ( and to Silent for the post)

Terrific viewing which brought back so many memories, including the shit pitches that players in those days had to contend with and still manage to show great skill and ability.

Anyone who still thinks the Desso was not a good investment should be locked in a dark room for a week and made to watch videos from that era on a loop, mainly ones made at Pride Park which was the biggest shit tip of them all.

Seems like no one's noticed so I'll get this in first (phew!) - The Derby County ground I was referring to was The Baseball Ground in those days.

Its now Chris Wilder, but not for being a player, for being the messiah!!!

Jan Aage Fjortoft as a kid because every time i scored a goal in the school playground i would run round doing his aeroplane celebration. Was inconsolable the day my old man had to explain to me we had sold him and Deano at the same time.

He must have seen the light when he signed apprentice/ pro forms with us,as I say I played with him for 2yrs at junior blades,13,s and 14s and at that point there was a couple or so pigs in our squad, but I must add very good players.;)
