Yorkshire TV Goals of the Year 1990

Just been sent an email which reminded me of this excellent programme. Anyone remember it? Basically the highlights of Yorkshire football from 1990 set to music. The songs used in the programme still remind me of the goals they go alongside even now (and I can’t have watched it for years and years).

I’ve got it on video somewhere and will, one day, get round to sticking it onto a DVD.

Highlights (from memory)

Blades 5-2 at Leicester (and Leeds at Bournemouth) – Stevie Winwood – Back in the High Life. There’s a bit in the song where I can hear John Helm saying ‘Chapman....Lee Chapman for Leeds’ every time I listen to it and the line ‘we’ll drink and dance with one hand free’ always reminds me of Agana celebrating.

Forest 3-0 v Pigs and Luton 3-2 at Derby – Chris Rea – Road to Hell – Very, very sweet.

Blades 3-2 v Forest – EMF – Unbeliveable. Still don’t really understand Deano’s celebration when he gets the winner, a sort of dismissive wave at the Kop

That Leeds fan diving off the barrier when they score at Oxford.

Harry Bassett’s ‘if they want to bottle it it’s up to them’ speech after Barnsley

Lowlights

The 0-4 at Elland Road and the 0-2 v them at Bramall Lane where Strachan sits on the boards and does the Vinnie Jones impression.

Fat lad Hirst scoring lots of goals as the pigs bounce back. Their game v Oldham is set to Belinda Carlisle – We want the same thing and they beat someone 5-1 (Hull?) to Medley and Warnes – I’ve had the time of my life

From memory wasn't Deaono's dismissive wave because a load of fans started to run onto the pitch?

I remember them playing "It's Over" by Roy Orbison over a montage of weeping Wednesday fans.
I'm not sure if it was on that programme or the news. Still brilliant to watch though!

Found it:-

You’re not the kings of Sheffield any more!
Your golden days have reached an end.
Throw dreams of Wembley to the wind.
You won’t be chasing trophies any more.

UEFA nights have passed you by.
The stars have all flown from the sty.
You can’t afford to pay them any more.
It's over.

It breaks your heart in two. The Blades look down on you.
But oh, what can you do? When you know it’s true.
Now everything’s new. We're better than you and
It's over. It's over.
It's over! Its’ over!

The clip above of the weeping pig fans was from Goals On Sunday.

Us v Leicester and Bournemouth v the Dirties were on a football special later that afternoon..
