Would Wilder Be Tempted

EDIT - And forgot Spackman! Fuck sake.

Right:
1) Bassett
2) Wilder
3) Warnock
4) Kendall
5) Spackman

The only relative success we have had (i.e. top flight football) since I've been watching has been under the tenure of Harris, Basset and Warnock. Let's not get carried away with Wilder, we'll see where he fits in 2 or 3 years time (hopefully at the top of the list) assuming he's still here. Kendall & Spackman (and others mentioned in this thread) were only here for short spells, achieved fuck all and none of them deserve to be even mentioned in the same breath as the aforementioned three.

for wilder to be above Warnock Kendall and spackman surely he has to have some success above league one
Don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of the guy but if he isn't cut out for the next level won't your list look a bit silly

I too think we have a real gem in wilder but he doesn't yet deserve to be so high up that list

Porterfield deserves a shout for two promotions and it's a shame Kendall was tempted by Everton as I think he'd have taken us up the season after and things might have been very different. Spackman? Didn't rate him, played nice football but didn't push the players enough, too many points dropped, we should have been top two easily with the players he'd got. CW would have had a team like that ten points clear.

Spackman wasn't cut out for management at any level. That's why he's not a manager anymore.

Although I understand the reluctance to place Wilder amongst some of the 'legendary' managers of years gone by, the context in which he's come into this club, shown the door to those players who were always surplus to requirements, and brought in a generally better quality of player throughout the team, taking us towards the pinnacle of Division 1 as Champions is nothing short of spectacular. Which other Utd manager of recent times can lay claim to an achievement that has such significance as this? We had stagnated, spent millions without any signs of recovery, yet Chris Wilder comes along and revives this club and it's supporters and gives us a team worthy of the red and white shirt. Is that not something that should be viewed as worthy of more than just a few passing accolades?

he managed the best footballing side I've seen at the lane
For six months and we weren't even in the automatic places for most of it. They did play some very good football but then they were very good players for Div 2.

I think one of the things important to managers is that sense of how far can they progress with a team. From our perspective, I still think we have an unknown with regard to the level of backing the Prince will provide, and also what McCabe's ongoing commitment will be. Wilder will have been given some indication of that investment from the inside. Overall, you look at our club in League One and can say that moving up a level, steadying, and pushing on to compete as we have done in the not so distant past is not beyond a club of our means. That's why the move for him, sentiment aside, made a lot of sense.

I think the key is whether an offer similar to the one we made him come from a club higher up. That is, not a rescue mission mid-season for survival against the odds, but an under-performing somewhat financially stable team with room to progress beyond what he could do with us. Wilder took this job when it was the right time to take it. He didn't do a Mickey Adams and ruin his future prospects by taking it at a time where failure was approaching inevitable.

There's always teams looking for managers come the end of the season and jobs have been offered based on far less than Wilder's recent achievements. My gut says he's still unlikely to get an offer he can't refuse given what he's already got.

I agree with all of that but he took over from Kendall and his football was far more expansive ,he did turn to shit when donachie left though but the fact remains for that six months we played some of the most exciting football I've seen at the lane

It's my view that Chris Wilder would need an imordinate amount of money to be prised from US.

In any case the Board will surely reward him, Knill and Mitchell with massive contracts, either in term or salary or incentives.

I'd go with a Championship mid-table contract for 10 years ( ok 7 then!!) plus further incentives shpuld/when we reach the Premier League.

Give the man a path to follow, a destination to reach. Believe in him, back him and fail by him if necessary and then come again like Burnley did with Dyche.

Have faith, do it the S2 way, it can be unique, just like Brian Clough at Derby and Forest. All the money in the world couldn't challenge the Brian Clough way. Wilder not a Clough? Who says so? Nobody knows if we don't capture it right now.

Wilder has not performed at Championship level.

So what?

Football is a simple game. He knows a player, he knows their characters and he knows how to motivate the players and organise them. He's managed over 700 games.

The man has huge potential. Go with the ride United.

Wilder has that vital connection with the fans, the club , the local players and he can even connect with modern day footballers who would love to chase that dream with such as him rather than some mercenary, here today gone tomorrow foreign manager. Surely!!

Clough hadn't managed in the top division when he took it by storm. Nor had Northampton Town funnily enough when they got there, but they didn't stay there. Clough did. Wilder can too, he's different and all those smooth talking, pouting fancy-dans will resent him just like they did Ranieri last season.

Barney got Wilder right last winter, well so did I actually:). Unlike some, I love past posts!!:D Shall I quote it?!

Maybe we should also consider the impact on our fortunes if Alan Knill was tempted to try his hand in the hot seat again. Wilder justifiably gets most of the plaudits as manager, but I think it's definitely been a two man show with defined roles.

It doesn't matter a jolt that Wilder has never managed in the championship . In fact I think it will be to our advantage as he and we are a bit of a unknown quantity .

The management style and values seem to be a throwback to the 70s , which works well for our club DNA .

Wilder is not high profile enough to be wanted by a Premiership club , who tend to go for Jonny Foreigner or same old same old .

Would he ever be tempted , that depends on how we treat him both respect and financial .

Wilder and Knill are the right age , but no spring chickens . Are we seeing the start of a dynasty , could be .

Just glad for all connected with the club , we seem to have finally cracked it .

Eh? He didn't sell Ramsdale, the board did. I'm guessing it was to cover the cost of Hanson, Carruthers and O'Shea and he accepted it. I've no idea how that translates into him being tempted away.
He said in an interview that he thought selling Ramsdale was good business for all as the lad going did not affect his squad and he was happy with Eastwood and Long as back up to moore

Even if we are relegated next season (which we won't be) the vast majority of fans won't turn on Wilder.

I agree ,I don't get where this thing comes from of our fans turning on managers at the first sign of a bump in the road
It's simply not true ,unless you count people's opinions on here (which I don't )

Like I said Gray, three big contracts!

Just listen to the home crowd in the Robson days, the Blackwell days, the Adams days, the Wilson days, the Adkins days.

For some there didn't even have to be a 'bump in the road'!

Not on here. Those wonderful fans at BDTBL. Fickle as any truthfully. Not even great during this promotion season until this past month. Let's be right.

Past posts illustrate that, shall I quote them?

If we are relegated next season ( which we won't be ) , some fans will turn on Wilder and he would walk . Simple as that .

It's all down to the backing he gets from the board in the summer

Cannot argue with that . Have said before let's see how we react when we lose three on the trot .

The board and fans have to back Wilder or we go backwards not forward .

Stocksbridge Park Steels may tempt Wilder away , being one of there own ,.............. but Alan Knill used to spend as much time as any one , down at the Lane when he could , however he always managed to get a posh seat in the Directors box , even at the reserve games , with probably a free pie and packet of Haribos chucked in as well , so he had better not leave he owes us bigtime .

I honestly don't think Wilder will walk from this job come what may.

He will see this job through regardless of club funding but what he will do is leave us all in no doubt what the shortage in funding is; no innuendo, no ambiguous nonsense.

Whether fans can cope with that and understand is altogether a different matter.

The only way Wilder will 'walk' from this job is if he is let down by the Board ( i.e. promises not met) or if he feels he has lost the dressing room.

Wilder will accept the level of funding from the Board because he sees a long term project here. I hope they surprise him on the upside!!

if we get relegated then the fans would have good reason to be on his back wouldn't they ?

I still dont think they would, who was the last manager who had his head actually called for at a game ?
Not on here at an actual game

Money isn't everything, unless you don't have enough. Tufty is one of a rare breed who seems to know what enough means for him.

When I was 25 years old I sat down and mapped out what I wanted to achieve over the next 30 or 40 years. I enjoyed my job and liked the Company that I worked for, and over the next 25 years progressed happily through that Company. During that time I was offered 50-100% more money from others but I was very happy in my work and earning enough, so why risk the rest for pure cash.

After 25 years the Company began to change and work wasn't the place that it used to be - so I left.

When people asked why I left the Company I replied that I didn't leave the Company, the Company left me.

That is a long-winded way of saying that I don't believe that anybody else will ever tempt Tufty to leave if he is appeh. Only our club's behaviour itself will make him even consider it.

The one job that I think that he would take, even if he were still happy with us, is the England job. But they don't give that to rough Northerners do they?!

The "you're getting sacked in the morning" chant was ringing around the stadium for Adkins when we went
2-0 down at home to Scunthorpe in the final match of last season.

No, I disagree entirely. Wilder has done brilliantly with the hand he's been dealt. Everything is relative and I'm relatively sure that Kendall and Spackman wouldn't have done anywhere near as good a job as Wilder in the same situation.

did Warnock Kendall or Spackman take over a squad that had finished the lowest in 30 odd years , full of players to get rid of
and very little money to boot

What Wilders done in 10 months is nothing short of miraculous
And if he wins the title its the biggest weve won outright in most of our lifetimes

only porterfield could say hes had us singing champions
