Would Wilder Be Tempted

Where does he stand in the list of past managers for us?

Bassett was the first manager I remember and for me Wilder is rapidly catching up him despite Harry's prolonged success for us.

And it may be harsh, but he's already eclipsed Warnock (simply by virtue of likeability adding to his managerial ability). So, a top 5 of lifetime managers would be...

1) Bassett
2) Wilder (very close to the above)
3) Warnock
4) Wilson
5) errrm.... Thompson?
(wow, slim pickings there...)
Gentleman John ,would top my life time list , but i would love Wilder , to knock him off my Personal favorite Managers perch .

CW unproven above L1 would be a huge risk for a Prem club. Unless a big Champ club (e.g. Sunderland) made him a ridiculous offer (salary and budget) I can't see anyone tempting him away.

End. of. thread.

Managers at that level seem to be more focussed on the latest 'systems' and recruiting players to fit.
I think part of Tufty's no-nonsense style works at lower level, but can't see it translating to over-paid mega stars who might just rebel.

Yeah but Wilders not going to sign this type of player in the first place though is he GCB. Cloughie's template with Derby comes to mind where he signed a collection of journeymen, has-beens and underperformers into a team where the end result added up to considerably more than the sum of the parts. Be nice wouldn't it?

Of course he could!!!

Say after 10 games we are doing well, and Sunderland are looking for a new manager. They will triple/quadruple his wages as a starting point. Then begin to negotiate on anything else he would want.

This could happen at any amount of clubs Villa ,QPR etc.

We have to be realistic he wouldn't jump ship to go to Preston etc. But there are so teams in the championship miles bigger than us.

That's why we need to get him to sign a contract extension with improved figures for himself.

I'd like to think that more money isn't the bottom line for everyone. The wage he's on at United will be a very decent one compared to almost all the rest of us. Not everyone wants to be a millionaire - some things are more important

He mentioned in Goals on Sunday he was delighted to be offered the job but it wasnt a job he craved or obsessed about getting, if it happened it happened.

Don't forget 6 months in the Championship and a relegation fight could quite easily turn the fickle fans on Wilder (or any manager), he'd be stupid not to look after number 1 if an established PL club came in for him, outside of that i doubt he'd leave us within the next few years.
I agree with you. Management is such a results driven job that in six months time the comments could be that he is fine in the lower leagues but can't hack it. In the Championship. I am sure United would be supportive but his market value would have slipped.you couldn't blame him if he got an offer from a PL club. I'm sure our Board will have taken all this on board and have a package on the table to reward and incentivise him next year

He certainly got the best out of players like Jamie Ward and Craig Bryson.

I think you're getting a bit carried away putting Wilder above Warnock at the moment! Kendall was better than Wilson imo

Good point actually, totally forgot Kendall. He'd go above Wilson and thankfully nudge Thompson off the list.

I'm not sure putting Wilder above Warnock is all that fanciful. Warnock = 1 promotion. Wilder = 1 promotion. Squads at their comparative levels are quite similar in expectation. And to be fair, Warnock took longer to turn us around...

The English management game is pretty straight forward for me.

English managers don't get the Premiership jobs any more. Any English managers who are in there have been at that level for a few years now. Hughes, Big Sam.

The others have all taken clubs up from the Championship. Dyche, maybe Houghton next season. Both Houghton and Dyche will never ever be offered a big big Premiership job.

On this basis CW will not be going anywhere until his days are up with us. He would not go to the high end of the Championship as long as his club are in that league and there is zero chance a premiership club will come knocking.

Nothing to worry about here.

I'm not so sure Tunny.

The mega-rich chairmen would be more likely to bin Tufty than see their cash-cow merchandise sellers hit the road because they don't fit with Wilder's way of doing things.

At the moment CW is without doubt the hottest English manager in the football league. Two promotions and almost two Titles in 2 years. All within a budget and all with good football.

Could any club tempt him away?

No.

So much focus on McCabe and bog roll prince now. The manager has delivered where all else has failed, the player new and existing have delivered, the dross has been weeded out, the fans are united and have delivered unbelievable support with 18,000 ST's already sold.

It's over to the owners to put the financial meat on the bones or to quickly bring some financial muscle in and do one.

Worst thing that could happen now is that they try to cut it on a shoestring until the cash starts rolling in (McCabes strategy int PL).

You've got us this far McCabe so let's ee the money!

Are you sure we have sold 18k season tickets?

I'm sure there was an interview where Knill had said he wasn't interested in management again. Apparently didn't like dealing with player negotiations, transfers etc at previous clubs.

Benitez and Houghton are probably "hotter" as far as PL clubs are concerned. All Wilder's success has been in the lower leagues. He's unproven in the top two divisions.

But he said “English”.

As for Wilder, I think it would take a really good offer to tempt him. If a PL club found themselves in unexpected trouble. Maybe say Southampton for example, he might be tempted by such an offer. I think as long as he gets decent backing, he would stay with us over going to any other championship club.

I think the only teams in England that he would join are
1. Manure
2. City
3. Chelsea
4. Arsenal
5. Spurs
6. Everton
7. Southampton

I dont think any of those clubs would go for him in the summer. The only clubs out of those that would even take a chance on Wilder if he were to get promoted to the PL are Everton and Southampton.

I cant see him leaving for any other PL team (Wet Spam, Burnley, Hull etc) and I cant see him leaving for any Championship team. Unless circumstances change within the club

I guess thats the benefit of have a passionate, committed FAN as the manager.

He'd certainly turn down the Liverpool job at £5m a year.

Agree. Wilder's more into making stars, not making mardy millionaires work for their latest cheque.

However, I can't get over the idea of him being tempted away to summat with more money. I'm reminded of when he was adamant about not selling Ramsdale and did with four hours of the JTW left. I know it's different when it's the manager himself involved, and especially a manager who was born and raised a Blade and had two stints with us as a player, but it's hard not to shek it :(

Tailed off pretty quickly that did, like my usual National bets ;)

No room for Kendall?

Eh? He didn't sell Ramsdale, the board did. I'm guessing it was to cover the cost of Hanson, Carruthers and O'Shea and he accepted it. I've no idea how that translates into him being tempted away.

Correct, not relevant at all.

In fact, what it shows is that the board backed CW by allowing the Ramsdale transfer to happen to help strengthen the squad for the final promotion push and letting a young keeper who was not playing finance the deals.

every ones a winner ....... especially CW.

But isn't the Wilder system exactly what Leicester did. The whole of the team being greater than its component parts?

I would say the one's who would have the biggest influence on whether he would leave would be the fans.
Living with his family in the city and knowing how badly some " fans" would react if we hit a bad spell or even a few bad result, he may not want to put his family through that....

He wants to more revered than John Harris just now, thatll take a while

whats chinese for hes one of our own

update - 他是我们自己的一个
is hes one of our own , how apt is the arrow going up at the end
