Last season all the media wallowed in the reasoning that other than Derby we were the worst premier league team ever

After 18 games the bottom of the table was
1734896602986.webp
If Southampton don’t beat West Ham on Boxing Day they will be worse than this
1734896753557.webp
But the media doesn’t seem to be so vitriolic towards them for some reason

We were fucking shit to be fair last season. Regardless of what Southampton do, we were proper wank

Wasn’t just our points total that made us stand out it was the manner of some of the defeats.

Absolute fuckin drubbings 5-0’s 8-0 etc, we were getting battered left right and centre and half the players had given up.

We deserved to be slated last season but my god what a contrast this year. Just enjoy the here and now and not worry about Southampton or last season.

Yet Soton have not played that much better up to this point under Martin and their current points total shows it. They recruited similar players to ourselves by even signing two players we had in our side last season.

Just because Martin's style was to piss about passing it around but ultimately going no where it's somehow seen as better football.

Think some Blades are being biased here.

There were some games last season where we didn't look anywhere near Championship standard....
Based on our general play we played like a mid table league 1 side playing a Premier league side in the cup.
It's the 1st time in 50 years watching the Blades that I've gone to matches knowing we've no chance...totally demoralising.

I've watched Southampton this season and regards general play.....they've look alot better than what we did last season.

However of course it's not about how you play....the bottom line is points.
Thankfully based on points...we showed that offially we weren't the worse team ever.

Think if they were having a few 5-0 and 6-0 defeats, then they would start being ridiculed, like we were.

A bit like we do now, but the quality of the opposition is far inferior.

The worry is CW has reverted to type and is trying to play a bit like '1-0 to the Arsenal' (for those who've been around a bit and remember the Graham years) whereas promoted teams that have survived tend to score shedloads of goals. If our leading goalscorers can only get about a dozen goals each it doesnt bode well for a PL season next year if we get there.

Bournemouth's philosophy for example seems to have been always we'll outscore you even if it ends 5-4. I dont overly like that but .. .

It has worked for them and the only season it didnt was when the Vile got away with 'the goal that never counted' ! Bournemouth relegated on goal difference.

Thing is about that season is everyone being suprised we was so bad. Everyone agreed at the end of the season before that we needed to go up just to be out of the financial s*it. Sold two of our star players replaced them with Hamer and Vinni got some cheap filler players....was pretty obvious we was going to get battered every week.

When we not only survived but has a spell challenging for the Champions league, in Wilder 1st season in the PL we didn't score many.
Our success was based on having a great defence + keeper, so we won loads of matches 1-0 and 2-1.

Maybe Wilder is already planning that success next season will be based on having an excellent 5 man defence making us difficult to beat.

Agree this season Wilders success is mainly due to having a fantastic defence that can deal with crosses, corners and long balls all day long.
Harry Souter is easily one of the best centre backs in the Championship.....his weakness is quick short balls and tricky dribbling.
Unfortunately his weakest is the style he'll come across more at Premier league, so it will be interesting to see how he copes in the PL.

Interesting looking at the tables in that pic in the OP.
Two years ago, 3 teams went up and 3 went down. A year later, 5 out of those 6 were right back where they started, with only Leeds bucking the trend through a stunning collapse.

After Leicester got hammered today, you wouldn’t bet against 5 out of 6 swapping straight back again, with Leeds taking the 6th division-swapping spot this time instead of Luton.

If all three promoted teams get relegated twice in a row, it’s another year where the other 17 move further away financially …

Yeah but not letting in goals doesnt win you matches. Everyone starts with a point.

The guy Id like us to acquire is the guy who scored for fun for Aberdeen last year. They sold him abroad Bojan Miovski. What a player he was.

Why are we only looking at top flight since it was renamed the Premier League? Stoke finished on 17 points in 84-85, which was in the 3 points for a win era.

What I seemed to have forgotten is how bad we were the 2nd half of the season 7 points from the last 20 games

I'm not really bothered about the comparisons, we were dogshit last season. After leaving the game on the first day against Crystal Palace where they hammered us 1-0, I said to my mate, it's gonna be a very long season.

Agree.....I left that match pretty shell shocked.

Yeh we only lost 1-0 but we were many levels below the level Palace were showing.
Think they have 3 goals disallowed for tight offside decisions but you sensed they could score when ever they wanted.

There were so many matches last season where it reminded me of the league 1 team when Nigel Clough was manager.
It's the most depressed I've ever been watching United in 50 years going to matches knowing we had no chance.

It probably caused psychological damage because I lost interest in football last season and for the first time, actually had thoughts about renewing my season ticket but as the this season was a total change with so many new players, thought I've give Wilder a chance and renew
and gradually...match by match....my enjoyment for football has returned....however Championship football is a very low standard compared to the PL.

There was a game last season (Villa at home) where I didn't even know we were playing or who we were playing because I'd lost interest so much.

I checked the general football scores about 15 minutes into the second half and saw we were losing 0-5.

That's the only time I can remember that ever happening in 20+ years of following the Blades.

I’m making no excuses for last season, we were dire but, just to keep things objective, they haven’t had any huge scores against them but they are also shipping a lot. At this point last season we had scored 13 and conceded 44. Southampton have scored 11 and conceded 36.
However, we ended 35 for 104 so an absolutely shocking run defensively after Christmas.
As others have said, a huge gulf between the divisions but I feel, if we can keep Cooper and the current back line and improve it with a class CB we should be more resilient.

It's almost a de facto closed shop.
Hope our new owners realise this and have the ambition to get established there before it becomes an officially closed shop and divorces fully from the EFL.
I believe that if our takeover happens and we get promoted , more than half PL clubs will be US-owned which will be quite a power-base.
In theory , we could see some real changes.
And if we are US-owned we may be able to negotiate with the Arsenals & Liverpools if they want our vote.

Defence is what keeps you up. In 19/20 we scored 39 and conceded 39 and finished 9th. Next season we had lost JOC and we never recovered.

If we go up with this defence, plus a bit of strengthening, we will have a far better chance of staying up than our last 2 embarrassing attempts.
