Worst premier league team

Just to expand on what I wrote above, when we finished 9th only 4 teams scored fewer than we did, although there were 11 teams below us.

Only Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd conceded fewer than we did.

People wax lyrical about our overlapping Centre Backs, but our results came because we had fucking good CB’s and WB’s, not because they overlapped!

If we go up again then we need to keep Souttar and sign a good athlete to play alongside him

Maybe get Walker at RB

That would be enough to compete well, with the current midfielders and hopefully Brereton to build on further forward

But honestly with the way the PL now is it feels like a respectable relegation is likely the best you can hope for

Defence is what keeps you up. In 19/20 we scored 39 and conceded 39 and finished 9th. Next season we had lost JOC and we never recovered.

If we go up with this defence, plus a bit of strengthening, we will have a far better chance of staying up than our last 2 embarrassing attempts.

I notice you are 2 in a few days time. Happy Forum Birthday !

To be fair I don't think you can compare Derby to us or Southampton. It's not looking at which team is worse but the general quality of the mid or lower table PL sides is much better . Even the ones who may have looked to be relegation candidates at the start of a season are head and shoulders above promoted teams .

Not surprised by this.

I'm an Everton fan, so pretty familiar with relegation scraps the last few years and this bottom 3 to me feel the worst.

Take away every point we've earned since Moyes come in 9 games ago, and we'd still not be in the bottom 3...

There'll probably be a similar article next season, sadly.

Whilst I'm for Harry Souttar in the Championship, I don't think his response to aerial attacks will be called on so much in the PL.

Scary thing is Soton's squad is miles better than ours was last season.
There’s a bit in Return of the Jedi where Han, Luke, Leia and Chewie are manning an Imperial ship and Han says to Chewie “keep your distance, but don’t make it look like you’re keeping your distance. I don’t know, fly casual!”

A bit like our recruitment “don’t spent anything, but don’t make it look like you’re not spending anything. Recruit casual!”

We swapped out Ndiaye and Berge for Hamer and Souza plus change which probably offsets the difference on Archer coming in and going out.

We bought Slimane and within just over a year he went for a small profit, similar with Traore. We somehow made a seven figure profit on Trusty who seems to be doing ok at Celtic, so he was gone within the year.

Tom Davies came in on a free or whatever a free looks like on football and then add on Grbic and I’d imagine the delta on all that lot is not far off the square route of fuck all!

So even though we made it look like we were in some way trying, we really weren’t!

This just shows the absolute gulf between the divisions. The Premier League would seem to be a closed shop now, and I think the best we can hope for going forward is to be one of those teams which is too good for the Champ, and not good enough for the Prem - sadly. Means we've always have something to play for though - no mid-table mediocrity here :p

The pyramid is broken, but nobody associated with the Premier League wants to admit it. Just look at those stats. The worst five sets of relegated teams in Premier League history all came in the last 7 years. All three promoted teams are going down for the second year in a row, and for the third time ever. And who would bet against it happening again next year?

Still, everyone should just smile and ignore it's happening, and look at all the shiny new toys that the big clubs are buying instead!

Nobody associated wit the PL cares - in fact they are probably happy with the current situation - they've created an effectively closed shop.

Agree….also to be honest why should they care?
Many people have predicted that eventually the PL will introduce a system where’s there’s no promotion or relegation
But by recently introducing the 5 subs from 7 rules, time wasting added on rule and next season the 8 second for goalies rule
It means newly promoted teams will find it much more difficult to stay up. Now it’s not about buying to bring your 1st 11 up to PL standard
Promoted teams need to have the finances to buy a squad of 20 players….all capable of playing at PL standard.

So most seasons going forward it will be 3 going up and 3 going down…….and I think this is deliberate.
A closed shop via the back door….so its less controversial.

Regards caring, the EFL don’t care about football or the pyramid system either, their clubs only care about themselves.
It’s taken them ages to allow more than 1 team to be promoted from the national league….when the evidence shows it’s a high standard in that league.

Also not sure how the EFL can complain about fairness when most of the TV money goes to the Champiomship clubs.
What about helping league 1 and league 2 clubs?

The bottom line is EVERY club and the vast bulk of fans are selfish….they want whatever system gives their club a better chance of success
But the problem is…..only 3 clubs can ever be promoted each year….and success has to be earned….its not an automatic entitled.

Wednesday fans are a great example…..they think they have an automatic entitlement to be in the PL.
The longest time United have been outside the top flight is 14 years, Wednesday are currently on a run of 25 years and don’t look like retuning anytime soon.
So their fans look for a scapegoat and blame the system. They argue they want fairness but they weren’t wanting fairness when they had the biggest budget in league 1. They don’t want fairness…….they want any system that allow that to be back in the PL.

Their current owner has gambled £150 million on SWFC and it’s not worked.
So they want him to walk away….so a new owner comes in to spend £150 million again.
If that doesn’t work….they want him to walk away…sell the club…so another owner can gamble £150 million.

If every club was gambling away large sums of money on transfers and salaries every season…there would be chaos.
I’ve even heard many SW fans saying FFP is holding back their club and they should be allowed to spend more and build up even bigger debts
But if their club went bankrupt owing £500 million, they’d be the 1st to demand sympathy wanting the £500 million debt to be written off by the tax man.

I mostly agree, but Bogle, Trusty and Holgate would walk into our starting XI

Bogle would at Championship level for his attacking flair but Gilchriest is better at defending.
Didn’t rate Trusty and Holgate at all, think they are average Championship level.

To be honest I always think defending is about partnerships and team work. Last season was a bit of a disaster, can’t blame any defender for looking poor really.
Compare this to this season. When Souttar and Cooper started playing…..all the other defenders suddenly looked so much better and more comfortable.

Would probably mean alternating between fun and frustration every year. Which is still better than boring, I guess.

Question is, how long can you keep your good players happy in that environment?

I think they probably do when so many matches nowadays are one sided thrashings. It doesn't make for a great spectacle or 'product.'

Until that starts impacting the value of the TV contracts - they won`t change anything.

Relegation being a foregone conclusion could very easily see the TV companies starting to supress the amount they are willing to pay. Far too many matches with nothing at stake.

Most viewers will tune in to watch the big teams so they do want to see thrashings.

Armchair Liverpool and Arsenal fans want to see them spanking Ipswich 5-0, not being held to a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Some decent points mentioned here, though unfortunately no solution.
