I had a Sunderland fan fit my new carpets recently, and he told me that Milton Nunez story. He said Peter Reid never actually saw him play before signing him, and signed him based on a tip off from a scout that he knew from his days at Everton. (Similar to what Warnock did with Lee Baxter).
As Reid has never seen the Milton Nunez his friend was referring too, the imposter Milton Nunez, who was also a professional football albeit not a very good one, was signed up hastily to beat off alleged competition from a catalogue of major European clubs.
Unfortunately for Sunderland as Reid had never seen the intended one in the flesh, the other one managed to make a couple of Premier League appearances before his Everton friend saw him on Match of the Day and hastily gave Pete a call to let him know he'd got the wrong guy.
It all seems far too bizarre to be true, but you never know what can happen in football these days I suppose.
